“No!” Tang Fang couldn’t believe it. This cursed monstrosity had a third-stage lunge attack? The simultaneous detonation of three Widow Mines hadn’t inflicted any real damage. The Sentry force fields and ground units were as fragile as insects before an oncoming train, utterly powerless to stop it.
This time, the serpent’s timing was impeccable. The Medivac was in the midst of climbing higher, and while accelerating upward might have dodged the silvery streak, Tang Fang and Arroz hanging from the cables below would have been caught in its path. Even the sheer force of the wind generated by the strike could have blown them into the abyss below.
“What do we do?” Without hesitation, Tang Fang shouted at the top of his lungs, “Arroz, let go!” He quickly released his grip on the cable, landing back on the platform's edge.
Arroz was positioned farther back, further from the platform's edge. Jumping down would mean certain death. But upon hearing Tang Fang’s command, the veteran didn’t hesitate for a second. Releasing his hands, he plummeted toward the abyss.
At the same moment, a golden flash streaked past the platform’s edge. A Zealot launched himself off the ground with explosive force, soaring out into open space. Catching up to Arroz mid-fall, he grabbed the veteran and hurled him upward with all his might.
Thud! Arroz’s hands barely caught the edge of the platform, his lower body dangling like a pendulum. Tang Fang reached out, grabbing his arm and pulling with every ounce of strength. With a final heave, both men tumbled onto the platform, gasping for air.
Above them, the Medivac narrowly escaped disaster. As it ascended diagonally, the silvery streak slashed through its underside, slicing off most of the cabin. If not for Housen and Churchill’s quick reflexes, they would have experienced a terrifying free fall.
The streak came to a halt thirty meters beyond the platform. Only then did Tang Fang see the true nature of this massive twenty-meter-wide blade—it wasn’t a tentacle or fang, but one of the serpent’s vertebrae.
Not only could it deploy the worm-like creature inside its body, but it could also weaponize its own spine. What kind of abomination was this? Tang Fang felt as if fate itself was mocking him. From the beginning until now, he’d survived near-death experiences repeatedly, only to be thwarted again and again by this serpent. Without exaggeration, this was the toughest battle he’d faced since his arrival in this world.
“Roar!” Dissatisfied with the results of its attack, the serpent let out another enraged cry. The bone claws on either side of the worm’s body swung outward, crushing a Dragoon and a Siege Tank beneath their weight.
Twenty-one Vikings screamed down from above, unleashing hundreds of rockets. Explosions erupted along the worm’s back like intermittent fireworks, leaving a long trail of flames.
Even a human would feel irritated by the incessant buzzing of flies; how much more so this already irate serpent?
The worm’s body stretched six hundred meters, and its spine-sword added another seven hundred meters—a total length of thirteen hundred meters. Coiling its body, the serpent raised its head high. The combined structure of the worm and spine acted like a divine sword, cleaving the air in two with a single swipe.
Three Vikings were bisected instantly, while two others were caught in the shockwave, spiraling uncontrollably toward the ground. And that wasn’t the end. From the gaps between the vertebrae of the spine-sword, countless gray, thread-like tendrils erupted, stretching rapidly like spider silk. In moments, they ensnared all the Vikings within a kilometer radius.
A few Vikings on the flanks of the formation managed to evade the initial tendril attack. Tang Fang thought they might escape—but then those tendrils burst apart into swarms of tiny creatures, spreading outward like a gray tide. Within seconds, the remaining Vikings were overwhelmed.
“Boom… Boom… Boom…” Continuous explosions filled the air as fiery debris rained down, thick smoke choking the heavens.
Thirty Vikings—gone. Ground forces were nearly wiped out, too. Meanwhile, the serpent had sustained only superficial injuries. Given its colossal size, even without EZero-powered regeneration, it would likely recover fully within a day or two.
After annihilating the Vikings, the spine-sword descended, slamming into the ground with a deafening crash. Four tanks and three Sentries were crushed beneath its weight.
The tendrils retracted, and in the serpent’s eyes, dealing with ground units clearly seemed far easier than aerial ones.
“Thud… Thud…” Burning remnants of the Vikings fell from above, accompanied by palm-sized winged creatures resembling mites.
Were these parasites? Amoebas? Or perhaps something else entirely? Since they emerged from the spine, could it be that these creatures—capable of forming tendrils or splitting into swarms—were actually derived from the serpent’s marrow?
“Tang Fang, I’ll distract it. Use the chance to escape,” Arroz said after catching his breath. In just those few moments, the serpent had nearly wiped out the entire ground force. A deep sense of helplessness washed over him. He knew he was nothing but dead weight to Tang Fang. If not for saving him, Tang Fang would have escaped long ago.
“Arroz, what are you planning?” Tang Fang gripped his shoulders tightly. “Don’t you see? It’s toying with us. Corrosive venom, the symbiotic worm, the spinal bone spear, explosive mites—all tools in its arsenal. Thinking we can escape from something like this is pure delusion.”
“Then… why does it keep stopping us from boarding?”
“It’s simple. Blowing us up with mites wouldn’t be entertaining enough. It wants to see our fear, watch us struggle, witness our repeated failures and despair—and ultimately break us. Only then will it satisfy its twisted, sadistic psyche.”
“You mean…” Arroz finally understood.
“Exactly. This thing’s intelligence surpasses even the one-eyed monster from Planet Namie. That creature relied on camouflage to hunt. This one revels in the pleasure of torment.”
The bone-sword swept across the battlefield, flattening tank after tank and obliterating Dragoon after Dragoon. As usual, as long as Tang Fang and Arroz made no move to board the Medivac, the serpent ignored them completely.
“Why is it doing this?”
“Why?” Tang Fang echoed bitterly, glancing at Claire’s anxious face aboard the Overlord in the distance. “Imagine being trapped in a desolate place for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. One day, a rat—or a roach—appears. Would you crush it immediately, or play with it first?”
