Chapter 200: Focused Fire on Microscopic Dust
It didn’t take long for Tang Fang’s suspicions to be confirmed. That crystalline, translucent, and seemingly delicate mushroom—its snow-white cap adorned with glittering diamond-like crystals and its surface shimmering with an eerie, seductive blue glow—began to move. With a slight quiver of its elegant form, it exhaled a thick cloud of pinkish mist.
“What’s it doing?” Claire asked, her voice tinged with unease.
“Hunting,” Tang Fang replied tersely, raising his C-14 Impaler rifle and firing without hesitation.
The muzzle flash illuminated the faces of those around him as the weapon roared to life. The pink mist spread rapidly outward, engulfing the surrounding space in seconds. No one present—not even someone with half a brain—would mistake this display for anything resembling a friendly welcome.
The cloud expanded at an alarming rate, quickly covering more than twenty meters and showing no signs of stopping.
“Open fire!” Tang Fang barked, issuing the command to the bio-enhanced squad of marines and marauders.
A storm of bullets and grenades rained down on the mushroom creature, striking its cap and stem. The explosive force disrupted the spreading mist momentarily, but like storm clouds gathering strength, the pink haze continued to roll forward, creeping inexorably toward the group.
“Fall back!” Tang Fang ordered sharply. Though the mist appeared harmless under the microscopes embedded in their powered armor, he wasn’t about to underestimate something so clearly tied to Element Zero—a substance notorious for birthing nothing short of nightmares.
After a concentrated volley from the marines and marauders, the barrage ceased. Through the magnified lenses of their helmets, they could see that the mushroom’s flesh had been riddled with shallow wounds—blue-tinged crevices and pinprick holes oozing milky fluid. But this state lasted only seconds. Before their eyes, the creature’s damaged tissue began regenerating at a visible pace, healing itself completely within moments. Even the metal projectiles lodged in its body were expelled, clinking harmlessly onto the ground.
Tang Fang’s brow furrowed deeply. Just as he’d feared—this thing shared the same regenerative abilities as the one-eyed monsters encountered on Planet Namie. As long as it had access to Element Zero, it could recover endlessly.
Claire and the others watched in stunned silence. A barrage capable of shredding an armored vehicle had done little more than scratch this fungal monstrosity, which healed itself almost instantly. Such resilience was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.
“We’ll see whether your regeneration is faster or my destruction is.” Tang Fang’s voice hardened as he gestured, summoning reinforcements: ten Zerg queens and ten siege tanks materialized around them.
Motioning for the team to retreat further, he took advantage of the momentary lull while the tanks adjusted their positions and switched modes. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he summoned a single zergling and sent it into the heart of the pink cloud. Something about the mushroom’s ceaseless emission of mist unsettled him, and he wanted answers.
His instincts proved correct when the zergling plunged into the haze. Almost immediately, the pink dust swarmed toward it like iron filings drawn to a magnet, enveloping the creature in layers of crimson sand. From afar, it looked as though the zergling wore a coat of red ash. Moments later, sparks ignited across its surface—the particles behaving like self-combusting phosphorus—and flames erupted violently along its body.
“Boom! Boom!” Explosions rippled through the fiery cocoon, sending fragments of scales and viscous fluids flying in all directions. The zergling writhed and screeched in agony, its tough carapace no match for the destructive power of the dust.
Tang Fang and his companions sucked in a collective breath. This seemingly innocuous cloud was far deadlier than anticipated—an explosive compound far more potent and volatile than ordinary gunpowder. Considering how resistant zerglings were to small arms fire, the fact that the dust could penetrate their defenses spoke volumes about its lethality.
Meanwhile, the mushroom continued spewing clouds of pink mist, one after another, until the haze stretched over a hundred meters in mere minutes. With countless energy channels crisscrossing the station's surface, evading these creatures entirely would be impossible. If they tried to skirt around them, the ever-expanding mist would eventually trap them—and then escape would become futile.
Time was running out. There was no room for hesitation. Narrowing his eyes, Tang Fang signaled the queens and siege tanks to attack.
“Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!” Razor-sharp bone spikes whirred through the air, creating sonic booms that pierced the atmosphere like the cries of nocturnal predators.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!” Siege tanks unleashed plasma orbs from their rectangular barrels, each shot trailing streaks of light before landing with pinpoint accuracy on the caps of nearby mushrooms.
The bone spikes tore gaping holes the size of dinner plates into the fungi’s stems. Before the creatures could regenerate, follow-up attacks from the queens widened the breaches, causing the towering mushrooms to collapse under their own weight. Milky liquid gushed from the broken stumps like fountains.
While the queens’ bone spikes inflicted devastating wounds, the siege tanks proved even more efficient. Their superheated plasma incinerated the crystalline flesh of the mushrooms, leaving scorched marks across the relic’s surface.
Some of the fallen fungi still twitched feebly, their shattered stems attempting to repair themselves. However, the marauders’ finishing blows ensured none survived.
Clearly, Tang Fang and his team had overwhelmed the creatures beyond their expectations. One by one, the mushrooms fell, halting the expansion of the deadly mist. Though the lingering dust wouldn’t dissipate anytime soon, it no longer posed a threat to the group.
“Phew…” Claire let out a long sigh of relief. She had never encountered anything quite like these organisms. Without Tang Fang’s leadership, survival against such bizarre and dangerous foes would have meant fleeing for their lives.
“Tang Fang,” Grant’s voice crackled over the comms just as the group debated whether to detour. Alongside his transmission came footage captured by reconnaissance drones. On the cylindrical surface of the "rudder," glowing energy channels pulsed with activity. Dozens of black cocoons split open, releasing newborn mushrooms that sprouted densely across the crystal exteriors, forming a veritable forest of horrors.
