Chapter 201: Flying Mushrooms
A quick estimate revealed that there were likely hundreds of mushroom creatures between their current position and the target destination. On the aerial footage, the mushrooms appeared as clusters of pale white ulcers against the silvery-gray and cerulean backdrop of the relic’s surface—a sight that sent shivers down Tang Fang’s spine.
Tang Fang had always harbored a mild case of trypophobia, and this scene was enough to make his skin crawl. While he’d anticipated encountering numerous fungal organisms, seeing them firsthand was an entirely different experience. Just like the earlier specimens they had destroyed, these newly hatched mushrooms began trembling their caps, releasing thick plumes of pink mist into the air.
What puzzled Tang Fang most was how some of the distant fungi—several kilometers away—reacted so quickly to their presence. Could it be that these plant-like organisms possessed a neural network? Were they capable of sharing information or even visual data with one another?
If one "rudder" section hosted hundreds of black cocoons, what about the others? And the central ring structure? The sheer scale of the relay station suggested thousands of such cocoons might exist across its expanse. A vast interconnected colony spanning the entire relic… the thought alone was chilling.
“Tang Fang,” Grant’s voice came over the comms, “you need to reach the target location before those explosive micro-dust clouds merge into a single mass. Otherwise, finding another way will become extremely difficult.”
Simultaneously, The Morning Star’s communications officer transmitted data processed by the ship’s central computer. Based on the rate of cloud expansion and the frequency of mushroom spore ejections, the conclusion was clear:
“Fifteen minutes. That’s all you have.”
Claire and the others exchanged grim looks. Fifteen minutes wasn’t nearly enough time to cover the distance on foot. Even Tang Fang understood the gravity of the situation. If they failed to breach the relic before the clouds converged, any alternative plan would be exponentially more challenging.
The explosive micro-dust forming the clouds could envelop the entire structure in a suffocating shroud if allowed to spread unchecked. Once fully connected, dispersing the haze would require immense wind power—on a scale unimaginable for something covering thousands of square kilometers. Worse still, the clouds expanded upward faster than outward. By the time they reached several kilometers in thickness, even nuclear weapons would struggle to penetrate effectively. Missiles and aerial mines would detonate prematurely upon contact with the upper layers of the cloud, rendering conventional attacks useless.
Fifteen minutes. No room for error. They had to enter the relic before the clouds merged—or risk derailing not only their mission but also the critical plan to rendezvous with Tang Lin and Tang Yun on Rector.
“We’re going in hard,” Tang Fang muttered under his breath. Summoning a Medivac transport, he gestured upward and called out to his team: “Board up—we’re taking the high ground!”
Cables dropped from the hovering craft, and the six of them grabbed hold, allowing themselves to be hoisted aboard. With a roar of its rear thrusters, the Medivac pivoted sharply and accelerated toward the target location.
At the Medivac’s speed, the 20-kilometer journey should have taken mere moments. Accounting for boarding and disembarking, they’d arrive within minutes. But when the team settled inside and reviewed the external camera feed, Tang Fang nearly bit his tongue clean off in disbelief.
There, behind them, the mushrooms they thought they’d left far below were now airborne. Vibrating their fleshy caps like birds flapping wings, the fungi ascended gracefully into the air, resembling dandelion seeds dancing on summer breezes. Their glowing crystalline caps shimmered eerily against the dim surroundings—a breathtaking yet horrifying spectacle.
“Damn it!” Tang Fang cursed under his breath. Claire and Housen stared in stunned silence. These things could fly? Not only that, but they were closing the gap rapidly, doggedly pursuing the Medivac.
Born from cocoons, classified as fungal plants, capable of flight, emitting toxic mists, and armed with explosive dust—what kind of monstrosity were they dealing with? Such bizarre lifeforms defied comprehension. To Tang Fang, however, the immediate concern wasn’t the trailing swarm—it was the dense cluster of mushrooms surrounding their destination, spewing clouds of pink haze like smoke-addled addicts.
The mist continued to spread, painting the landscape in shades of pink. The only area still untouched was the narrow strip of space between two energy channels—a winding, claustrophobic path akin to a small trail through the mountains. As the toxic fog advanced, it became evident that soon even this narrow passage would vanish entirely.
“This can’t continue,” Tang Fang resolved silently. Glancing down at the boiling sea of pink mist below, he summoned 119 Viking fighters from his system inventory.
“Eliminate those mushrooms.”
At his command, the Vikings surged past the Medivac, deploying MT50 Lanzel aerial bombs across the energy channel extensions. Explosions erupted in fiery blooms, sending shockwaves rippling through the swirling clouds. Rapid-fire cannons spat streams of bullets, tearing apart mushroom bodies and scattering chunks of flesh like falling snow.
“Hurry, disembark!” Twenty meters from the target, Tang Fang ordered the Medivac to halt. He and the others slid down cables to the ground.
It seemed the mushrooms had deduced their intentions. Around the relic’s entrance, the density of fungal growth was overwhelming—hundreds of mushrooms lined the energy channels. The mist surged forward like a rising tide, creeping ever closer to the entry point. Despite the Viking airstrikes slowing the advance momentarily, they couldn’t eradicate the resilient fungi. Most bombs detonated prematurely upon contact with the explosive micro-dust, erupting into fiery bursts mid-air.
“Securing entry rights may take some time. Until then, we must stop the mist from spreading further. Arroz, Housen—you two lead 20 siege tanks to bombard the left flank. Walton, Churchill—take the right flank.”
With orders issued, Tang Fang turned and sprinted toward a door-like structure twenty meters away, flanked by marauders providing cover fire.
Arroz and Housen leapt onto a tank, guiding their squadron to the left side of the entrance. Switching to siege mode, they unleashed devastating artillery strikes on the areas where the mist churned most violently. Walton and Churchill mirrored their actions on the opposite flank. Meanwhile, Claire hesitated briefly before following Tang Fang, clutching her "God of the North Wind" rifle tightly.
Reaching the structure—a small protruding chamber bathed in flickering ε-light—Tang Fang examined the doorway closely. Suddenly, pressing firmly on a hidden panel, he revealed a rectangular indentation in the wall. Within it pulsed a faintly glowing psionic flame.
Exhaling deeply, Tang Fang nodded to Claire and stepped forward, extending his hand toward the flame. Runes flowed between his forehead and the flame, transmitting streams of light.
Explosions echoed around them as siege tanks roared in the distance. Claire, unsure how long the process would take, patrolled nearby with a squad of marauders, guarding Tang Fang vigilantly.
Sensing the urgency of the moment, some mushrooms retracted their stalks like coiled springs, launching themselves skyward. Drifting down like parachutes, they formed a dense, white canopy overhead.
Clearly, the siege tanks were ineffective against flying targets. More and more mushrooms took to the air, weaving a massive web of fungal bodies above the battlefield.
“Tang Fang, they’re attacking from above!” Claire shouted, raising her weapon. A 20mm high-explosive round tore through a mushroom cap, spraying viscous fluids everywhere. Marines and marauders opened fire simultaneously, peppering the sky with bullets and grenades. However, the sheer number of enemies overwhelmed their efforts. Marine spikes lacked the stopping power to cripple the massive fungi, while marauder grenade launchers lacked anti-air capabilities, leaving them ill-equipped to handle the airborne threat.
Arroz, Housen, Walton, and Churchill found themselves caught off guard, unsure how to counter this new development.
Realizing their previous tactics weren’t working, the mushrooms launched a desperate final assault. The crystalline structures embedded in their caps detached, shooting forth like arrows. Tracing silver streaks through the darkened sky, they rained down on the tank formations like hailstones, wreaking havoc among the defenders.
