Chapter 199: Mushrooms?

The first possibility was that the relic had sustained damage, causing an EZero leak. However, this seemed unlikely since The Morning Star had traversed the wormhole without incident, covering a dozen light-years in just forty minutes. If the structure were damaged, their journey would not have been so smooth.

The second, more plausible explanation was that the source of the EZero reaction wasn’t the relic itself but something else entirely.

“What could it be?” Tang Fang wondered aloud as his mind flashed back to their encounter on Planet Namie. Hadn’t they stumbled upon uninvited guests residing within one of the Element Zero isotope refineries

“Hey, check this out! This thing’s awesome!” Housen's voice crackled over the comms, sounding like Columbus discovering a new continent.

Tang Fang looked up to see Housen standing atop a glowing rectangular crystal conduit embedded in the energy trench. His eyes were glued to towering cocoon-like structures—each over ten meters tall.

“Oh no… Is he really going to do this again?” Before anyone could react, Housen reached out toward one of the black cocoons, clearly intending to make contact.

“Housen, stop!” Arroz and Tang Fang shouted simultaneously.

Their voices echoed through the comms with such force that Walton, Churchill, and Claire winced. By the time they turned to look, Housen had already climbed onto the energy trench, completely ignoring the danger.

“Thud, thud, thud.” The sound of heavy footsteps reverberated in the air as Arroz sprinted forward, his speed fueled by the stimpack. In seconds, he closed the three-hundred-meter gap between them. With a swift kick, he sent Housen sprawling backward.

“You idiot! How many times do I have to tell you not to touch things?” Arroz growled, his cigar bouncing angrily as ash scattered everywhere. He was furious—and frustrated. Housen’s insatiable curiosity combined with his destructive tendencies made him both unpredictable and dangerous. It was a miracle the man was still alive.

“A-Arroz, y-you…” Housen stammered, scooting backward awkwardly while muttering incomprehensible nonsense.

“What now?” Arroz glared at him, exasperated.

“Y-your back…” Housen pointed shakily behind Arroz.

Arroz frowned and glanced over his shoulder. To his shock, the previously pitch-black cocoon now bore spiderweb-like cracks. A reddish-brown glow emanated from within, spreading slowly across its surface and growing brighter by the second.

“Arroz, Housen, get away from there!” Tang Fang’s warning crackled through the comms.

Without hesitation, the two men retreated to safer ground. Moments later, Tang Fang and the others arrived. Housen muttered defensively, “It’s not my fault this time…”

Tang Fang ignored him, his gaze fixed intently on the cocoon.

“Crack, crack, crack.” Like eggshells breaking apart, the cocoon’s surface began to splinter. The reddish-brown light intensified until, half a minute later, a blinding flash of red light erupted along with a burst of mist. The cocoon collapsed in on itself with a thunderous boom.

“Fall back! Spread out!”

Cautiously, the six team members retreated further, widening their formation. Walton and Arroz raised their C-14 Impaler rifles, while Claire unslung her sniper rifle, the God of the North Wind.

“Look!” Churchill called out suddenly.

Everyone turned to see another cocoon, two hundred meters away, glowing with the same reddish-brown patterns. Beyond it, countless other cocoons lit up in succession, forming what looked like a tidal wave of brown light cascading toward the horizon.

“Shit, we’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest,” Housen groaned innocently. “But seriously, this isn’t my fault.”

“Shut up! No one said it was your fault,” Tang Fang snapped, electricity sparking faintly between his fingers.

Judging by the unfolding scene, it wasn’t entirely fair to blame Housen. These cocoons were clearly alive—they must have sensed their presence and reacted accordingly.

“Tang Fang, what’s going on? Drone footage shows a massive number of cocoons ‘waking up,’” Grant’s alarmed voice came through the comms, accompanied by images captured by the drones.

On the colossal relay station, the once-blue energy trenches now pulsed with red flashes, creating a kaleidoscope of colors. From afar, it resembled a cosmic beast slowly awakening.

“If I’m right, we’ve encountered an old friend,” Tang Fang said cryptically.

“An old friend? What are you talking about?” Grant sounded utterly confused.

“Grant, move The Morning Star farther away. There might be a battle soon, and I don’t want the ship caught in the crossfire.”

“A battle? Should I send some unmanned attack drones for support?”

“No need,” Tang Fang replied firmly. Based on their experience with the one-eyed monsters on Planet Namie, a few drones wouldn’t even serve as appetizers. “You’d only get in my way. Stay back, and let me handle this properly.”

“Alright… Be careful.” After a heavy sigh, Grant disconnected the line and ordered the crew to retreat the ship to a safe distance.

In the meantime, the thick gray fog surrounding the area began to thin. “Stay alert—it’s coming,” Tang Fang warned, raising his C-14 rifle steadily.

A few tense moments passed before the fog finally cleared enough for visibility. Everyone gasped in disbelief at what emerged: a plant—a massive mushroom-like organism ten meters long. Its cap sparkled with diamond-like crystalline growths, shimmering with an eerie blue hue. Pure white and flawless, it looked almost delicate, like a piece of art.

“Uh, boss, it doesn’t have legs. How’s it supposed to come out?” Housen asked in confusion.

“Thud.” Claire smacked him upside the head. “Sometimes, I wish I could tear that mouth of yours into two pieces.”

“Ow…” Had it been Churchill, Housen would have retaliated immediately. But because it was Claire, all he could do was turn beet-red and choke back his frustration.

Meanwhile, Tang Fang paid no attention to their bickering. Twenty bio-enhanced marines and marauders materialized around the mushroom-like creature, encircling it tightly. Given its ability to survive in such a harsh environment and pierce the crystalline walls of the energy trenches to absorb Element Zero, Tang Fang doubted this organism was harmless. Far from it.
