Chapter 17: The Birth of Another Battle Pet (Part 1)
“You promised,” Fei Yin lectured her elven friend sternly as we resumed our quest to find Anser Array a new pet. “No more useless critters, okay?” Her words, however, carried little weight given how she cradled Fluffykins—the white rabbit—against her chest with an expression of pure maternal affection.
“Mm-hmm, absolutely!” Anser Array nodded vigorously, her voice dripping with sincerity. “I won’t make the same mistake again.”
Frankly, it was hard to take her at her word when her eyes sparkled like gemstones every time she laid eyes on an animal, regardless of its combat potential—or lack thereof.
“ROAR!”
A thunderous growl interrupted our idle chatter. Our ears perked up instantly; after hours of searching for a formidable beast, we’d grown hypersensitive to any sign of danger. Without hesitation, we quickened our pace and headed toward the source of the sound.
The roar belonged to a massive lion, its big round eyes glinting with ferocity. Its mouth bristled with jagged fangs, and its sleek coat of silver-gray fur shimmered like polished metal armor. This wasn’t just any lion—it was a Roaring Hunter, named Kylir, a Level 33 "Frenzied" predator.
Opposite the lion stood a pitiful young sheep. It was barely full-grown, its soft wool still fine and fluffy from the abundant grasslands of Gemflower Plains. Plump and docile, it looked more like a stuffed toy than a wild animal. But now, blood trickled from its wounded front leg, and it trembled uncontrollably, staring blankly at the approaching predator as if too terrified even to flee.
It wasn’t unusual for predators to hunt prey, but this scene struck me as odd. Most wildlife here were content to leave each other alone unless provoked by intruding Planewalkers. Foxes didn’t chase chickens, and raccoons rarely bothered mice. In fact, stepping into their shared territory often united them against a common foe.
But Kylir’s behavior was different. Hunger burned in his eyes, and his sharp claws scraped impatiently against the ground. His very name—“Hunter”—hinted that he might be driven by instincts beyond mere survival. Perhaps his relentless pursuit of weaker creatures had something to do with his extraordinary power.
“Little Anser, look at its stats!” Fei Yin shrieked excitedly, pointing ahead. I glanced at the hovering text above the lion:
Roaring Hunter Kylir, Level 33 (Frenzied)
- Attack: 23
- Defense: 21
- Health: 972
- Roar: 80% chance to weaken nearby creatures for 20 seconds.
- Heavy Strike: Stuns target for 5 seconds.
- Soul Absorption: Actively absorbs Soul Power to accelerate leveling.
My breath caught in my throat. Such high attack and defense stats, coupled with formidable health and devastating skills, made this creature a nightmare even for seasoned warriors. While I was confident I could defeat him solo thanks to my four-level advantage, it wouldn’t come without effort. And then there was that mysterious skill: Soul Absorption. From what I gathered, Kylir had honed his strength through countless hunts across the plains, climbing steadily to Level 33.
“Tame it!” I urged Anser Array. Imagine having such a powerhouse as a battle companion—a beast capable of rivaling professional warriors, turning one-on-two fights into manageable skirmishes.
“Are you sure about this…?” Anser Array hesitated, casting us a reluctant glance.
“Little Anser, remember your promise! Besides, doesn’t it look kind of cool?” Fei Yin coaxed, mixing threats with flattery.
After a moment’s pause, Anser Array reluctantly crept forward. Behind her, Elegant Strings cheered loudly: “Go get ‘em, Anser Array! Bring it back!”
Oddly enough, the sight of such weak prey seemed to dampen Kylir’s enthusiasm. Despite his growls and pawing at the ground, he lingered, unwilling to deliver the killing blow. By the time Anser Array reached taming range and raised her whistle, Kylir finally ambled over to finish off the sheep.
Perfect. The sheep held Kylir’s attention, leaving him oblivious to the approaching beastmaster. Anser Array brought the whistle to her lips and blew—a sound inaudible to human ears but perfectly clear to the heightened senses of wild beasts. It triggered an instinctive bond, filling the creature with trust and affection.
“ROAR!” Kylir let out another deafening roar, flexing his muscles as if boasting of his dominance. Little did he know, moments later, he’d become as tame as Fluffykins, following our long-haired elven maiden loyally.
As Kylir reared back to strike the final blow, Anser Array lowered her whistle, signaling the completion of the taming process. A familiar orange glow appeared—just like when Fluffykins had been tamed.
“Yes! Fantastic!” Fei Yin cheered, dancing with excitement. Even Elegant Strings and I couldn’t help but grin at Anser Array’s success.
“ROAR… ROAR!” Suddenly, Kylir whirled around, charging straight at Anser Array.
Ah, typical playful behavior from a newly tamed pet. Still, being tackled by a massive lion—even during playtime—wasn’t exactly comforting.
“Whoosh!” With a single swipe of his paw, Kylir sent a cascade of red numbers above Anser Array’s head, draining her health significantly.
Wait, what?!
We stared at each other, dumbfounded. Wasn’t playing with pets supposed to be safe?
Meanwhile, the chubby sheep, which had been standing idly by, finally shuffled over. It nuzzled Anser Array’s boots with its woolly head, radiating docility.
A sinking feeling settled in my gut. Could it be…?
“I’ll call you Baa-Baa!” Anser Array shouted, backing away hastily while waving her hands. The sheep’s default label disappeared, replaced by glowing letters spelling out Baa-Baa.
Of course…
“Oh no, Little Anser! Why did you tame the sheep?!” Fei Yin exploded, her face turning redder by the second. I began mentally preparing myself for mutton hotpot.
“But… didn’t you tell me to catch it?” Anser Array protested innocently.
“We meant the LION, the LION!” Fei Yin screeched, veins bulging in her neck.
“Well…” Anser Array glanced back at the waddling blob of fluff trailing behind her. “Don’t you think it’s adorable?”
Adorable? Sure. While Fluffykins was spry and clever, Baa-Baa’s rotund clumsiness offered a completely different charm. Rolling along like a cotton ball rather than running, the sheep was undeniably cute—but…
“Cute won’t save your life in battle!” Fei Yin practically breathed fire through her nostrils.
We knew better than anyone that Anser Array would sooner die than harm an animal, forcing us to adopt her bizarre brand of animal conservationism whenever we were around her. Though Kylir posed no real threat to us, we prepared to retreat before things escalated further.
“Grrr… GRRR!” Suddenly, Kylir pounced, sinking his teeth into Baa-Baa’s neck. Already critically injured and teetering on death’s edge, the Level 3 sheep collapsed instantly, legs twitching once before going still.
Silence fell over the group as we watched the tragic demise of Baa-Baa, whose brief existence ended not with a bang but a whimper.
