Chapter 16: The Birth of a Battle Pet (Part 2)

The Gemflower Plains were a land of abundance, blessed by the goddess Netheria herself. Here, lush vegetation thrived in greater variety than anywhere else, and countless species of wildlife roamed free—each with their own peculiar habits. Some creatures were docile, preferring to avoid humans unless provoked. Others were far more dangerous, lurking unseen until they struck, capable of inflicting grievous harm—or worse.

Ordinary travelers rarely sought out these predators unless compelled by necessity or ambition, opting instead to take longer routes around them. But today, we weren’t ordinary travelers. We ventured straight into the heart of danger, hoping for nothing less than the fiercest, most fearsome beast to cross our path. After all, our newly minted beastmaster needed a formidable companion if she was going to survive what lay ahead.

“That bloodtoxin scorpion over there looks promising,” Fei Yin said, pointing excitedly at the menacing arachnid as though orchestrating a romantic match. “It’s fast, packs a punch, and has poison. Perfect!”

“Boar! Boar! BOAR!” Elegant Strings shouted from another direction, his voice trembling with barely contained enthusiasm. He sounded like he’d just spotted an old flame after years apart. “High attack, high defense, tons of health—it’s the ultimate physical pet. Great for hunting, even better for brawling!”

“The boar is hideous,” I scoffed, wrinkling my nose. “Clumsy, dull-witted—no personality whatsoever. That scorpion, on the other hand…” I squinted hard, tilting my head as if trying to see it through rose-tinted glasses. “…is…uh…striking?” Try as I might, no amount of artistic reinterpretation could make the scorpion anything but grotesque. Either Fei Yin had questionable taste, or I did. Or both.

“Striking?!” Elegant Strings snorted. “Look at those lumps all over its body! It’s not practical either; stronger monsters will squash it flat in seconds. A boar can tank hits, deal damage, and stun enemies with its charge. Versatile, reliable—and cute, too.”

Cute?

I stared at him in disbelief. How could anyone look at a boar’s tusks, muddy snout, bristling mane, and perpetually grumpy expression and come away thinking “cute”? Clearly, between the three of us, two people—possibly three—had wildly divergent ideas about aesthetics.

“Scorpions are better!” Fei Yin declared passionately.

“Boars rule!” Elegant Strings shot back with equal fervor.

“Boars stink!” Fei Yin countered.

“Scorpions are trash!” Elegant Strings parried.

And so it went, back and forth, until finally, they turned to me simultaneously:

“Jeff, you decide. Which one?”

Ah, now that they’d asked for my opinion, I felt duty-bound to step in and guide them toward proper judgment.

“Well,” I cleared my throat diplomatically, then turned to Anser Array, the long-haired elven girl who would soon call one of these beasts her own. “I think neither of their suggestions are good… What do you think about that giant wide-mouthed toad by the river?”

She hesitated, glancing between us uncertainly. It was clear she didn’t want to offend anyone but was struggling to find a polite way to decline our suggestions. Before she could respond, however, her eyes suddenly lit up.

“There!” she exclaimed, abandoning us mid-conversation as she dashed toward a patch of dense underbrush nearby. A warm, orange glow erupted from within the grass, followed by her delighted cry:

“I’ve got it! I’ve caught my first pet!”

Curiosity burned hot in our chests as we rushed over. What kind of creature had captured her attention so completely that she’d ignored our carefully considered recommendations? What made it stand out against venomous scorpions, sturdy boars, and imposing toads?

Moments later, Anser Array emerged from the bushes cradling her prize—a small, snow-white mammal known for its agility. Its fur gleamed like freshly fallen snow, and its powerful hind legs coiled with potential energy, ready to unleash bursts of speed. Its crimson eyes darted nervously, betraying a mischievous intelligence. There was only one problem: it was absurdly tiny—barely larger than the palm of her hand.

In fact, the word “pet” felt generous. This wasn’t a battle companion; it was a rabbit.

Fei Yin’s jaw dropped so low it nearly hit the ground. Elegant Strings’ glasses slid down his nose as his bulging eyes strained against their frames. As for me, I felt like someone had slammed a brick into the side of my skull. My vision swam, and bitterness welled up inside me. All that debate, all those grand plans—and this was the result?

“Little Anser!” Fei Yin lunged forward, snatching the rabbit from her grasp. She waved it accusingly in front of her face, visibly restraining herself from throttling the poor thing. “I get it—you love animals! And yes, finding a strong yet beautiful pet isn’t easy! But still, you’re supposed to be choosing a battle companion! Even if you didn’t like the scorpion, did you really have to—did you really have to pick a rabbit?!”

Fei Yin choked on her own indignation, sputtering and gasping for air. If the rules hadn’t forbidden swapping pets once tamed, I’m sure she would’ve happily boiled the creature into stew right then and there, forcing Anser Array to start over with something more respectable.

Yes, the creature that had stolen her heart—a purebred wild white rabbit—was utterly useless in combat. With a staggering agility score of 36, it boasted pitiful stats of 1 in both attack and defense and possessed no special abilities whatsoever. Calling it a “battle pet” was less irony and more outright mockery. Its sole redeeming quality? It was undeniably adorable.

Its red eyes blinked shyly as it nibbled gently on Fei Yin’s finger, purring contentedly while exposing its soft belly for scratches. Even I couldn’t resist giving its fluffy head a pat, and Elegant Strings eagerly offered it an apple from his pack.

Ignoring its complete lack of utility, the pairing of a rabbit and an elf somehow made sense. Both shared long, pointed ears—a feature so distinctive it almost hinted at some hidden ancestral connection.

“But…” Anser Array mumbled, twiddling her fingers nervously as she looked up at Fei Yin with pleading eyes. “It’s just so cute…”

As if sensing the tension, the rabbit abandoned the apple Elegant Strings had offered and began licking Fei Yin’s finger affectionately. Its little body relaxed, leaning lazily to one side as it basked in our attention.

Confronted with such overwhelming cuteness, Fei Yin caved instantly. Her attempts to maintain an irritated expression faltered as a reluctant smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. Giving in, she scratched the rabbit’s belly with her free hand.

“This time, fine,” she muttered through gritted teeth, glaring half-heartedly at Anser Array. “But next time, you’re getting a real pet, or else…” Her threat trailed off into giggles as the rabbit wriggled happily in her grasp. “Look, it’s laughing!”

“Give it a name,” Fei Yin urged, already smitten despite herself. She rocked the rabbit back and forth, unwilling to relinquish it anytime soon.

“I’ve already thought of one,” Anser Array replied cheerfully, her tone dripping with syrupy sweetness. “Let’s call it ‘Fluffykins.’”

As soon as she spoke, the default label above the rabbit’s head—simply reading “Rabbit”—flickered and vanished, replaced by the glowing words: Fluffykins.

Author’s Note:
Many readers have asked why Jeff isn’t insanely high-level despite being online 24/7. It’s actually quite simple: For Jeff, questing is like work. No one works nonstop without breaks, right? In his downtime, he enjoys watching sunsets, drinking beer, or wandering hillsides picking flowers (though I don’t recommend that last activity). Plus, most quests are done with friends, and solo play leaves him aimless. For NPCs, leveling isn’t everything—it’s just part of life.

Lastly, someone aware of their differences tends to hide them. Being too strong attracts unwanted attention. And let’s face it—if Jeff were ridiculously powerful, Little String wouldn’t have much of a story left to tell. By divine decree, his growth must remain modest.
