Chapter 18: The Birth of Another Battle Pet (Part 2)

“Oh, my poor little Baa-Baa…” Anser Array gasped in anguish as she watched her newly tamed sheep collapse lifelessly to the ground. Her eyes shimmered with tears, and when she turned back toward Kylir, there was no trace of affection left in her emerald-green gaze—only a cold fury that burned like the green flames I’d once seen flickering over molten copper during one of my alchemical experiments.

Bang! Without hesitation, she raised her powerful firearm, Sela Jiong, its thunderous roar accompanied by a burst of fire as the bullet struck the massive lion, sending it sprawling to the earth.

This was the first time I’d ever seen the long-haired elven beastmaster aim her gun at an animal. When faced with choosing between “cute” and “even cuter,” the elf had chosen revenge for her fallen pet without a second thought. Poor Kylir truly hadn’t picked his targets wisely. Of all the creatures he could have attacked, he chose the one person who wouldn’t tolerate such behavior—and sealed his own fate in the process.

“Wait… did I just hallucinate, or did she actually attack an animal?” Elegant Strings whispered to me in disbelief, his wide-eyed expression betraying utter shock at this uncharacteristic outburst from the gentle elf.

“You saw exactly what I saw!” I exclaimed eagerly, already drawing my sword and charging forward with gleeful abandon.

Throughout our journey with Anser Array, I’d endured endless harassment from wild animals—Level 30 grizzly bears, Level 27 wolves, even measly Level 20 foxes—all of them nipping at my heels and threatening to take chunks out of my rear. But I’d never dared fight back, forced instead to flee in humiliation while these otherwise pathetic beasts ran rampant. Every single indignity came rushing back as I swung my blade: snakes coiling around my neck, spiders drenching me in foul venom, boars goring me into the dirt. And now, every one of those tormentors wore Kylir’s face. Finally getting the chance to vent my frustrations on a living, breathing beast made my heart soar like it had grown wings.

“But… what should I do?” Elegant Strings muttered helplessly, completely paralyzed by Anser Array’s sudden change in demeanor. He stood awkwardly clutching his bow, unsure whether to shoot or hold back, stamping his feet in frustration.

“Idiot, stop standing there and help!” Fei Yin snapped, launching two ice arrows in quick succession before rounding on him with an exasperated glare. Then, almost casually, she added, “And don’t forget to skin it after we’re done—I haven’t gotten any pelts in ages!”

It must be said, Kylir’s fate was undeniably tragic. Facing four adventurers several levels above him, the mighty predator became nothing more than a punching bag and emotional outlet. Between being stunned by gunfire, slashed by swords, riddled with arrows, and impaled with jagged shards of ice, he barely managed to whimper before collapsing lifelessly to the ground. Even then, Anser Array wasn’t satisfied; she stomped furiously on his limp body, leaving behind what could only be described as a lion-shaped pancake.

As I stared down at the flattened carcass of the once-proud hunter, I felt a strange sense of vindication. Sure, I’d spent most of my trip running for my life, but at least I hadn’t ended up like this poor beast—a glorified stress reliever for vengeful travelers.

Death isn’t the end for tamed beasts. After a brief cooldown period, their masters can revive them using soul summoning. True enough, under Anser Array’s command, Baa-Baa stretched lazily, rolled onto its side with a contented gurgle, and hopped back to its feet. Shaking off its plump body and fluffy wool, the sheep looked around blankly, utterly unfazed by its recent brush with mortality. Oblivious to our presence, it bent down to munch on a patch of grass, chewing methodically.

“My sweet little Baa-Baa…” Unlike her stoic pet, Anser Array was overcome with emotion. She scooped the resurrected sheep into her arms, showering it with kisses and caresses, tears glistening in her eyes as guilt over its earlier demise lingered. Meanwhile, the oblivious creature lounged comfortably in her embrace, still munching away on tufts of grass with an air of smug indifference.

“Hmph…” Fei Yin glared at both Baa-Baa and Fluffykins, torn between adoration and exasperation. “You colossal idiot! Look at these two useless critters you’ve picked. How are they supposed to help you in battle? Serves you right!”

Anser Array stroked the sheep’s head fondly, smiling softly. “I never intended for them to fight in the first place.”

“Then why bother having pets at all?” Fei Yin demanded, hopping up and down in frustration.

“Because I like them! Just look how cute they are…” Anser Array tilted her head, speaking matter-of-factly as if the answer were obvious. “…Who says pets have to fight? I chose them because I love them, not because I need them for combat. Fighting isn’t fun anyway.”

“But…” Fei Yin sputtered, caught off guard. “…your chosen class relies on pets to win battles. Without them, you’ll lose every time.”

“Why does winning matter so much?” Anser Array countered, pulling out her specialized beastmaster bracelet and opening a portal large enough to swallow a small human. Gently, she placed Baa-Baa inside. Later on, if she needed it, she simply chanted the spell to summon it from the magical space.

Afterward, she retrieved Fluffykins from Fei Yin’s reluctant grasp and continued, her voice light and cheerful. “I play games to enjoy myself. At home, I rarely get to see animals like these. Here, I can spend time with them, and that makes me happy. I don’t find fighting enjoyable. If I lose, so be it. Do you really think beating others brings joy? Who decided we have to kill each other to have fun?”

Her words carried a childlike innocence, bordering on naive simplicity. She spoke with a faint smile, clearly aware of how impractical her views sounded. Yet, she delivered her monologue without expecting agreement, treating it almost like a joke meant to amuse rather than persuade.

“I…” Fei Yin faltered, unable to muster a rebuttal.

Not just Fei Yin—Elegant Strings and I fell silent too. Confronted with Anser Array’s earnest yet absurd logic, none of us could find the words to respond.

We knew full well that beastmasters formed bonds with their pets because they shared a deep reverence for nature, viewing themselves as equals among all living things. Their connection stemmed from hearts untainted by greed, filled instead with awe for the natural world. This bond allowed them to walk safely among predators, earning trust and loyalty through mutual respect.

But was that still true?

In my relatively short adventuring career, I’d encountered a handful of successful beastmasters in action. To my disappointment, few displayed any semblance of that untamed spirit. Animals weren’t companions to them—they were tools: weapons, shields, armor, or mobile spell platforms. These modern beastmasters viewed their pets solely as instruments for battle—tools to secure victory, protect themselves, and deal death more efficiently.

They pushed their loyal companions into harm’s way, forcing them to charge headlong into danger while staying safely behind, picking off enemies from afar with bows or firearms. When their pets were injured or near death, I saw no signs of concern or sorrow. On the contrary, when push came to shove, these so-called “children of the wild” sacrificed their pets without hesitation, abandoning them to buy themselves time to escape.

These actions, once unthinkable, had become normalized. We accepted them without question, even held them up as standards by which to judge others—including Anser Array’s choices.

Reflecting on this, I couldn’t shake the feeling that most beastmasters didn’t genuinely love their venomous spiders, ferocious bears, or fanged hyenas. If those creatures couldn’t provide significant combat power, they’d discard them without a second glance—or worse, slaughter them to absorb their strength.

When had the untamed spirit been lost? Beastmasters had abandoned their reverence for nature, becoming mere practitioners of a peculiar craft. They approached their pets with ruthless pragmatism, seeking only to exploit them rather than cherish them.

Only this girl before me—the one cradling her rabbit and sheep with genuine affection—truly loved her pets. She protected them, valued them, and treated them with care, free from ulterior motives.

How ironic that something so natural now seemed abnormal.

Such is the way of the world: when falsehood becomes commonplace, truth often appears strange. Perhaps, among Netheria’s countless followers, only this girl acted in accordance with her goddess’s wishes. By befriending animals and living harmoniously with nature, she remained true to her soul and faith.

“I’m tired…” Anser Array’s voice broke through my reverie, light and melodic. “…Let’s call it a day. I’ll find the last pet some other time.”

“Please, please pick something useful next time,” Fei Yin pleaded half-heartedly, knowing persuasion was futile.

“I’ll try…” Anser Array teased, sticking out her tongue playfully.

“Wait a moment…” As Anser Array turned to leave, Elegant Strings called out hesitantly. When she glanced back, the usually confident archer blushed and stammered, “W-when will you log in again? Could you send me a message? For your final pet… let me come with you.”

Anser Array blinked in surprise, considering his request for a moment before breaking into a soft smile. “Sure.”
