Chapter 93: A Pure Love Part 1

“Wow, wow, wow! The goddess smiled!”

“No way—she really did!”

“Think she saw me through the window and laughed?”

“Idiot, it’s clearly because of me.”

“…”

Ignoring the chatter from the boys around him, Lin Tian felt a sense of relief wash over him as he watched Gan Yanyu blend into her surroundings with ease. His greatest fear had been that she’d be caught up in some nasty rumors or gossip. After all, things like depression and taking a year off school were hot-button topics in high school circles—enough to keep tongues wagging for weeks on end.

If Lin Tian were still his old self—the kind who liked to stir up trouble just for kicks—he might’ve joined in on the speculation too. But thankfully, so far, everything seemed fine. Gan Yanyu appeared cheerful, though her striking appearance naturally drew attention. There was no helping that.

As one popular song put it:

But given how much buzz surrounded her right now, Lin Tian knew better than to approach her openly. As the most gossiped-about guy in school, stepping near her at this moment would only fuel the fire. With that thought, Lin Tian turned and headed back to class.

“…”

Gan Yanyu tilted her head slightly, catching sight of Lin Tian outside the classroom. She started to rise, but before she could take a step, he was already gone. Her brow furrowed as she sank into deep thought.

Back in his seat, Su Ran, sitting in front of Lin Tian, suddenly spun around.

“Lin Tian,” she said curiously, “isn’t that girl from Class C—the one who came back to school today—the same one who visited you last time?”

“Yeah, what’s wrong?” Lin Tian blinked, caught off guard.

“You took three days off, and when you returned today, you were with her.” Su Ran’s eyes gleamed mischievously. “Don’t tell me… are you two living together?”

“…”

Lin Tian didn’t know how to respond.

“Am I right? She’s your girlfriend, isn’t she?” Su Ran pressed, excitement bubbling over as she rubbed her hands together.

Though Lin Tian couldn’t fathom why Su Ran cared so much—or why she was getting so worked up about it—she kept pressing. “Come on, spill it! Is she your girlfriend, huh? Huh?”

“She’s… close,” Lin Tian finally muttered.

At those words, not only Su Ran but also Xu Yong, sitting nearby, snapped their heads toward him.

“What do you mean ‘close’?” Xu Yong demanded, gripping Lin Tian by the collar. “How close? Are we talking centimeters here?!”

Before Lin Tian could react, Xu Yong began shaking him violently. “Wait, man—I was just teasing you before! You’re actually serious?! SERIOUS?!”

“Lin Tian, Lin Tian!” Su Ran chimed in, practically glowing with enthusiasm. “You HAVE to explain this properly!”

Facing the two of them—one radiating jealousy and the other acting like the ringleader of a fan club—Lin Tian sighed deeply.

“She’s close,” he repeated simply.

“So does that mean you admit you like her?” Su Ran asked eagerly.

“Yeah.”

Lin Tian didn’t hesitate. At this point, denying it would make him seem less than honest. Besides, maybe it had started after the concert. That night, when they shared an unspoken connection onstage, something shifted inside him. Looking back, he realized his feelings for Gan Yanyu hadn’t changed—they’d always been there; he’d just been slow to notice.

Before, he’d thought of her like a delicious dessert—something to admire from afar. Now, she WAS the dessert. And since no one else had ever talked to him about romance before (aside from Xu Yong, whose advice was questionable at best), Lin Tian decided to speak candidly.

“Ohhh…” Su Ran leaned forward, eyes sparkling with intrigue. “So where are you guys at? Holding hands? Kissing? Or… hehe?”

“Nope.”

Lin Tian paused, recalling the brief hug Gan Yanyu gave him earlier in the morning in a moment of excitement.

“We hugged. For two seconds.”

“Pfft—” Su Ran burst out laughing. “That’s what you call ‘close’? Sounds like there’s quite a gap!”

“You two are too precious,” Su Ran teased. “You haven’t even hit the flirtation stage yet, let alone anything else.”

Lin Tian stroked his chin, thinking for a moment. “Still,” he said seriously, “I think she feels something for me too.”

“HAHAHAHAHA!” Xu Yong erupted into laughter. “Man, I want to believe you, but hearing THAT come out of YOUR mouth is just hard to swallow.”

Some things were better left unsaid. Sometimes, confidence could turn into one of life’s biggest illusions.

“I said ‘feeling,’ not ‘love,’” Lin Tian clarified calmly.

“…”

“Here, let me help you,” Xu Yong interjected earnestly. “Just go straight up to her and  tell her you’ve already booked a room. She won’t be able to resist.”

“?”

This time, Lin Tian showed no mercy. He delivered a swift crushing punch to Xu Yong’s stomach, leaving the poor guy writhing on the floor clutching his sides.

“…”

For Lin Tian, an 18-year-old navigating these waters, the conclusion was clear. “Now’s not the time to dwell on this.”

The art exams were approaching. Gan Yanyu had just returned to school. Her grandfather was still recovering in the hospital. Their journey toward the cup tournament had barely begun. There were countless responsibilities ahead, and Lin Tian doubted Gan Yanyu had any extra energy to spare for romantic thoughts about him.

That’s why he chose the word “feeling”—a cautious, conservative term. If Gan Yanyu harbored no such inclinations toward him, confessing his feelings would only burden her, perhaps even sending her spiraling into despair. He couldn’t risk causing her harm just to satisfy his own desires.

“So if you haven’t held hands, kissed, or even flirted…” Su Ran prodded, unable to contain her curiosity, “then what exactly have you done?”

“Well…” Lin Tian raised a hand, counting off on his fingers. “We’ve stood on the rooftop feeling the breeze, gone to get foot massages together, wandered into the mountains late at night, and annoyed the neighbors in the middle of the night.”

“None of that sounds remotely normal,” Xu Yong groaned, pulling himself off the floor.

“You are the one who is not normal,” Su Ran shot Xu Yong a disdainful look. “I think it sounds beautiful.”

Her eyes sparkled dreamily. “No lust, no manipulative games, no dirty physical exchanges. It’s pure.”

“What kind of relationships have YOU been in?” Xu Yong exclaimed, visibly horrified. Such sentiments sounded nothing like what a typical highschool girl should say.

Was Su Ran—the model student hiding her otaku obsession—not showing yet another side of herself?

“Lin Tian, don’t listen to him,” Su Ran said, cradling her cheeks and grinning innocently. “This is perfect as it is. Take it slow. These kinds of pure loves are rare—you need to hold onto them. The kissing and all that will happen eventually.”

“—But until then,” she added slyly, “you’ll need to endure.”

“Endure what?”

“Loneliness, of course.”
