Chapter 152: Firebats and Medics
"System, Restart... Okay."
"Initializing..."
"Preparing Data..."
"Updating... 10%... 40%... 80%..."
"Release."
"Run, Now."
A deep hum reverberated as the system rebooted. The interface flickered to life, revealing the bases of all three races once again.
"Whew" Tang Fang let out a sigh of relief. It felt like riding a roller coaster—his heart had nearly leapt into his throat. What a rush.
"Commander, all Terran base systems are back online. System startup complete; satellites are operational."
"Emma, what just happened?"
"The system detected usable data from the chip and initiated an automatic upload and update process."
After processing her explanation for a moment, Tang Fang finally began to grasp the situation. "An update? Tell me, what exactly was updated?"
"Due to the incomplete state of the chip, only limited data was available. Only the Barracks received new content."
"Hmm?" Tang Fang turned the damaged chip over in his hand, an idea sparking in his mind. If one chip held limited data, could there be others like it?
"Emma, do you know where this chip came from?"
"According to mission logs, this chip was handed over to the research center by Cain Rudolf. No information about its origin was recorded at the time."
"Mm." Tang Fang paused briefly, then dismissed his wandering thoughts. He refocused on the Terran base and selected the Barracks. Behind the Ghost icon, two familiar units appeared—units that hadn’t been seen since Starcraft I: the Firebat and the Medic.
Firebat: Also known as the Flamethrower Trooper, these soldiers wore CMC-660 Heavy Combat Suits equipped with "Destruction Flame" plasma flamethrowers. The burning plasma easily penetrated the carapaces of Zerg units, roasting them alive—a weapon akin to the Hellion’s Infernal Flames. Whenever you heard the phrase, “Need a light?” you knew a pyromaniac stood nearby. Like Marines, Firebats could also use Stimpacks, significantly boosting their combat effectiveness.
Medic girls: Officially called Medics, these women of the Federation wore thick powered armor that concealed their graceful figures under layers of metal—an aesthetic trade-off for enhanced safety. Compared to Marauders and Firebats, their suits were lighter but still bulkier than Marine armor (CMC-300). However, they boasted superior power systems and advanced microcomputers.
Equipped with Terran’s most cutting-edge nanotechnology-based emergency medical systems, each Medic carried a suite of tools integrated into their CMC-powered armor. These included cellular robots for gathering injury data, viral robots for targeted treatments, microrobots for mechanical repairs, miniaturized fusion reactors for energy supply, high-capacity batteries, core processors, and semiconductor laser arrays for remote energy transfer.
In addition to healing injuries, the system employed nanorobotic repair mechanisms to mend damaged sections of their powered armor using flying microrobots.
As magical support units, Medics offered more than just battlefield triage. In addition to their primary "Healing" ability, they now possessed two additional skills carried over from Starcraft I: "Restoration" and "Optical Flare." Restoration could cleanse debuffs such as Lockdown, Plague, or Parasite infestations. Optical Flare, while somewhat gimmicky, temporarily blinded enemy vision by damaging retinas and photoreceptors—a rare offensive tool in their arsenal.
Previously, both Restoration and Optical Flare required upgrades in the Academy. Now, Tang Fang found them readily accessible through the Barracks' Tech Lab attachment. Alongside these skills, the lab also introduced two classic upgrades from Starcraft I: U-238 Depleted Uranium Shells and Caduceus Reactors. The former increased Marine range, while the latter improved Medics’ healing efficiency by enhancing the miniaturized fusion reactor within their suits.
As a gamer, Tang Fang fondly remembered one iconic line from campaign missions when selecting a Medic: “For the last time, this is not a strip-o-gram!” That particular quip hit him right in the nostalgia sweet spot.
Next, he hovered the cursor over the newly added units. Both Firebats and Medics cost 50 minerals and 25 gas, consuming 1 supply point each—a highly efficient investment.
While Marauders, Marines, and Reapers were ranged units, Firebats excelled in close-quarters combat. Paired with Hellions—one fast, one slow; one heavily armored, the other lightly protected—they formed a fiery duo whose strengths complemented each other beautifully.
But compared to Firebats, Medics brought far greater value. These nanotech-powered juggernauts provided unparalleled sustainability to Terran forces. Before Medivacs entered the fray, Marines and Marauders relied solely on Queens’ Transfusion abilities to heal Stimpack-induced tissue damage. But given the infeasibility of deploying Zerg Queens amidst Krotan battlefields, injured bio-troops often remained untreated until death claimed them.
Now, with Medics in the mix, Stimpacks transformed from suicidal gambits into standard tactics. While they couldn’t match Tang Fang’s infinite self-healing or Housen and Arroz’s regenerative prowess, there was no denying that Medics doubled—if not tripled—the staying power of Terran bio-forces.
What did this mean? With a single battalion of bio-troops, Tang Fang felt confident taking on an entire mechanized division of government forces. And that wasn’t even counting Hellions, Widow Mines, or Siege Tanks.
Even a modest force of 20 Siege Tanks, 20 Hellions, several Widow Mines, and a Medic-supported bio-battalion could hold its own against half an army of government troops.
Glancing at his resource tally—44,245 minerals and 500 gas—he grimaced. Gas shortages were becoming a bottleneck for mass production. But then, an old saying came to mind: “When you’re sleepy, someone hands you a pillow.”
The five massive containers filling the hall weren’t filled with water—they brimmed with Element Zero (EZero), totaling several tons. Those researchers must have thought pumping more EZero would unlock the chip’s secrets. Little did they know, this fragment had nothing to do with the Epsilon civilization. Attempting extraction via harmonic resonance? A fool’s errand.
Pocketing the chip, Tang Fang approached the nearest container. "Cain Rudolf sure spared no expense trying to crack this thing. Just the EZero here is worth billions in MYD."
"Heh, thanks, Lord Cain," he chuckled, commanding four larvae to morph into cocoons. He summoned his lone remaining Drone to the hall, pointed at the glass container, and issued the order: "Build Extractor."
The Drone’s body exploded outward, blood-red sinews snaking up the smooth surface of the container. Within moments, the entire structure was cocooned in fleshy tumors pulsating like a heartbeat. Ten minutes later, the tumor ruptured, revealing a grotesque yet functional Extractor.
Simultaneously, gas values in his system interface surged upward by increments of four per tick.
He summoned four more Drones, preparing to repeat the process on the remaining containers. Suddenly, faint tremors shook the ceiling above.
"Huh? Earthquake?" Connecting his consciousness to the external Terran units, Tang Fang quickly understood the source. It seemed the Locust Swarm drones released by the Hive had wreaked havoc on Arroz and Housen’s squad. Seven or eight Marines had already fallen victim to relentless missile barrages.
Furious, Housen followed Arroz’s advice and lured the Hive toward a tall building. Then, in a daring move, he infiltrated the Hive itself, blasting away at its control hub until the colossal hundred-meter-tall mothership crashed to the ground.
"That Housen… what a walking disaster," Tang Fang chuckled, shaking his head. He ordered sixty Marines stationed upstairs to assist the pair, leaving only two Marauders behind as his personal guards.
By the time the other four Extractors finished construction ten minutes later, gas resources began climbing at a rate of 20 every three seconds. After twenty minutes, the counter stabilized at 10,500 gas—a total harvest of 10,000 gas, with each container yielding approximately 2,000.
With a thunderous roar, the two Marauders obliterated the Extractors, ensuring no useful information remained for the government forces. Tang Fang planted a timed explosive in the center of the hall, took the elevator back to the 101st floor, set another bomb, and returned to the ground level. Stepping outside, he watched dust clouds settle around the fallen Hive. Uncontrolled Locust Swarms staggered drunkenly before crashing into the ground in fiery explosions.
Two deafening blasts echoed behind him—one from the 101st-floor data center, the other from Sublevel -25.
Resources now stood at 43,925 minerals and 10,500 gas. Tang Fang glanced coldly at the security camera mounted on the signal pole.
"So,” he smirked, “can your masters sit still after this?"
