Chapter 145: Why Is the Watch Running Fast?
The water by the lake shore was deeper than Wang Ping had anticipated. A certain honey badger sat hunched on the edge, arms crossed, contemplating whether he should fetch some dried meat to try his luck at fishing. Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed behind him.
"Didn't Gu Lang go off to set up the tent? What’s he doing back so soon?"
Wang Ping turned around and saw Gu Lang approaching, one hand holding a tablet while the other carried—what in the world?—a tripod.
Gu Lang squatted down next to the honey badger, placing the tripod firmly on the ground. He even gathered some stones to weigh it down, ensuring the wind wouldn’t knock it over. Then, with practiced ease, he mounted the tablet onto the tripod's bracket.
"Here you go, Boss," Gu Lang said cheerfully. "A lot of people in the live stream want to see you. Just don’t knock this over, okay?"
Wang Ping scratched his head, utterly baffled.
“I get it, but where did that tripod even come from? Are you seriously not going to explain?”
When Gu Lang had been packing the car earlier, Wang Ping had watched every move—and yet, somehow, he hadn’t noticed when or how the tripod made its way into the vehicle. In a place as vast and open as this, bringing along a portable urinal could be justified as an act of environmental responsibility. But Gu Lang didn’t even have a proper camera! And yet here he was, lugging around a professional-grade tripod.
"What a waste of good equipment…"
Shaking his head, Wang Ping leaned closer to inspect the tablet screen. As his furry little face appeared in close-up, the chat exploded with a flood of messages: "Hello, Boss!" followed by a cascade of virtual gifts lighting up the display. The scene now was unrecognizable compared to what it had been just moments ago.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang adjusted the rearview mirror-mounted camera on the SUV to capture his tent-pitching efforts outside before hopping out to get to work. Confident in his Wi-Fi connection, he wasn’t about to let the second camera go unused. Hadn’t someone in the comments just mentioned wanting to watch him set up camp?
Lost in these thoughts, Gu Lang remained blissfully unaware that only a fraction of the tens of thousands of viewers were still tuned into his feed. Most had switched their attention elsewhere—specifically, to the honey badger attempting to fish by the lake.
---
Over in Arshan city, the sun had already dipped below the horizon, casting the neighborhood in twilight. Streetlights flickered on as Yan Lili emerged from the kitchen, carrying a steaming bowl of noodles. She placed it on the dining table, pulled up a chair, and sat down, her eyes glued to a tablet resting beside her food. Between bites, she giggled softly, the amber pendant hanging around her neck catching the glow of the living room lights.
Not far behind her, sprawled out on the counter, lay a tortoiseshell cat wearing an Elizabethan collar. It stretched its tongue toward her, tears welling in the corners of its eyes.
On the tablet screen, a small, flat-topped honey badger clad in a tiny black T-shirt was hard at work digging a hole by the lakeside. The background shimmered with bright daylight, clearly indicating a time difference between locations.
Although Tibet operated under the same standard China Time as the rest of the country, its longitude meant it was actually two hours behind the mainland. By the time Gu Lang finished wrestling with the camping tent recommended by Wang An, wiping sweat from his brow, he noticed something odd—the sun hadn’t set yet.
He lifted his wrist to check his watch. The hands pointed to 7 PM, but confusion clouded his face.
"Huh? Based on the position of the sun, shouldn’t it only be around 5 PM? Did my watch speed up?"
Back at the lake, Wang Ping had dug a pit nearly as deep as himself. On the live stream, all that could be seen was the occasional bobbing of a white peach-shaped head amidst a steady stream of dirt and rocks being tossed aside.
"What’s Boss doing?"
"Why is he digging a hole by the lake?"
"Mysterious moves—I’m lost."
In the chatroom, viewers speculated wildly. Some guessed the honey badger was creating a burrow for nighttime shelter; after all, honey badgers lived underground. Others theorized he might be searching for worms to use as bait. But no worms had surfaced despite the depth of the excavation, and the theory quickly drowned in a sea of scrolling commentary.
After a while, the screen showed the honey badger climbing out of the hole, brushing mud off his paws. He sauntered over to the spot where the pit connected to the lake shore and began clawing away the soil barrier.
Water rushed in through the gap, filling the hole.
"Hmm… Now comes the bait…"
Wang Ping paused thoughtfully, glancing toward the distant parking area nestled in the mountain hollows.
"That’s quite a walk…"
Two hundred meters converted to six or seven hundred steps for the honey badger, and hunger gnawed at him. Laziness won out. After a moment’s consideration, he decided to delegate the task.
"Aoouu!"
It was rare for Wang Ping to vocalize, given how much he disliked the sound of his own voice. However, after adapting to his new identity for so long, it no longer bothered him as much.
Moments later, Gu Lang came jogging over.
"What is it, Boss? You called me?" His gaze drifted instinctively to the freshly dug pit behind the honey badger. Was this why he’d been lingering by the lake all this time?
Wang Ping tilted his head up, making a gesture near his mouth with his tiny paw.
By now, this was the one signal Gu Lang understood perfectly. Whenever Wang Ping mimicked eating, it meant snacks were required.
"...Right."
Gu Lang glanced back at the Jeep parked 200 meters away, then down at the honey badger sitting expectantly at his feet. Silently cursing the laziness of his furry companion, he forced a smile. “Hungry, Boss? Beef jerky or spicy gluten?”
“Spicy gluten? Have you ever seen anyone use that to catch fish? And since when do mute animals get multiple-choice questions?” Wang Ping bared his teeth, visibly annoyed.
“Uh…” Realizing his blunder, Gu Lang quickly corrected himself. “How about the beef jerky you ate earlier?”
Wang Ping nodded approvingly, then plopped down on the ground, watching as Gu Lang scurried back to retrieve the snack.
Behind him, a chorus of honking filled the air. A flock of birds descended from afar, diving straight for the lake’s surface. Curious, Wang Ping stood up, shading his eyes with his paw. Peering across the water, he spotted several spots darker and deeper than the surrounding lake. Shadows shifted subtly beneath them as the sunlight changed angles.
“So there are islands in the middle of the lake… Too bad they’re so far away.” Wang Ping sighed wistfully. If those islands were closer, he might have swum over to raid a few nests for eggs. But upon arriving at the shore, he’d realized the landscape was barren—no grass, no nests. Clearly, the waterfowl preferred the central islands.
Footsteps approached again as Gu Lang returned, panting slightly, clutching several vacuum-sealed packets of beef jerky. He handed them to Wang Ping, who immediately began tearing into the packaging without so much as a thank-you glance.
Rolling his eyes, Gu Lang prepared to leave—but paused, remembering something. He jogged back to the tripod setup and peered at the tablet screen.
“Huh? It’s showing 7 PM here too? That can’t be right!”
Staring at his wristwatch, which he’d recently reset to 5 PM, Gu Lang fell into deep contemplation.
