Chapter 117: Watch Me Expose You All!
A bead of sweat dripped onto the brittle leaves scattered across the forest floor, shattering into nothingness before vanishing beneath the carpet of decay.
Crunch.
The sound of heavy boots crushing dry foliage echoed through the woods as footprints were left behind in their wake. The panting breaths accompanying them grew louder with every step.
"Damn it, why are they still chasing us?!" Gu Lang wiped his face with the back of his hand and glanced over his shoulder, desperation creeping into his voice. His stamina was fading fast, and Wang Ping—the small but fiercely loyal companion trailing him—wasn’t faring much better. Every step sent tremors through the poor creature’s legs. Hearing Gu Lang complain yet again, Wang Ping shot him a venomous glare, muttering under his breath.
"How dare you even talk? What on earth did you do to piss them off so badly? They’re acting like rabid dogs!"
"If we keep running like this, they’ll catch up for sure!"
Gu Lang muttered incessantly while scanning the towering trees around him. His gaze finally settled on a massive pine tree, its trunk wider than two men combined.
"Up the tree!"
Without waiting for Wang Ping's objection, Gu Lang sprinted toward the base of the tree, wrapped his arms tightly around the trunk, and began scrambling upward, scraping against the rough bark.
"You idiot! Climbing trees comes naturally to you now, huh? But can’t you stop leaving obvious tracks everywhere?"
Wang Ping shook his head in exasperation. He scurried back to the spot where Gu Lang had taken off, smoothing out the disturbed leaves and covering the area with nearby debris. Then, grabbing a fallen branch, he retraced their steps, dragging it along the ground to create misleading footprints that veered away from the tree.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang huffed and puffed his way six meters up the tree, his muscles screaming in protest. Just as exhaustion threatened to overtake him, he managed to grab hold of the first sturdy branch and pull himself higher. After climbing further, he found a dense cluster of branches thick enough to conceal his body. Finally safe—at least for the moment—he clung to the trunk, trembling from exertion.
"Huh? Where’s Boss?" It wasn’t until now that Gu Lang realized his companion hadn’t followed him up. Scanning the ground below, there was no sign of the little guy.
Naktu arrived sooner than expected. By the time Gu Lang had secured his perch, Naktu emerged at the exact spot Gu Lang had passed moments earlier. Though visibly winded, the young man clenched a knife in one hand and scanned the forest with sharp, calculating eyes.
From beyond the treeline came Damuge’s voice, shouting in Mongolian.
"Naktu, have you caught up to him yet?"
"Not yet!" Naktu snapped back irritably.
A few seconds later, Damuge’s cold, commanding tone rang out again, still in Mongolian: "He saw you fire your gun. We can’t let him escape and report us. Capture him at all costs! Keep pursuing him while I circle ahead."
"What?! You want me to chase him alone? What about Sasgo? Are you just going to abandon him?" Naktu barked angrily.
"Sasgo’s fine; he’s resting by the river. Naktu, listen to me if you know what’s good for you," Damuge replied, his words laced with thinly veiled menace.
"Tch."
The young man sneered, muttering curses under his breath. Casting a final glance at the tracks on the ground, he resumed his pursuit.
Their conversation carried openly through the air, completely unconcerned about being overheard. And indeed, Gu Lang heard every word—but none of it made sense to him. Neither he nor Wang Ping understood a single syllable of Mongolian. To them, it might as well have been ancient runes.
But Wang Ping’s mind was racing. Piecing together what he’d observed earlier and the snippets of information gleaned from their shouting match, something clicked. Aside from Damuge, neither of the other two pursuers seemed to speak Chinese. If they were part of an ethnic minority group within China, this would be highly unusual. Most young people from recognized minorities could communicate in Mandarin, even if they weren’t fluent in their native languages. So who exactly were these strangers?
Unless… they weren’t locals at all. Perhaps they were uninvited guests from across the border.
Wang Ping froze mid-step, his expression darkening. Turning sharply, fury burned in his eyes.
"Damn foreigners bringing their dirty schemes into our country?"
By now, the false trail Wang Ping had created extended far enough, putting considerable distance between them and Gu Lang’s hiding spot. Dropping the branch, Wang Ping darted to a nearby pine tree and scaled it effortlessly.
Moments later, Naktu appeared below, his face etched with suspicion.
"Huh? The tracks end here?"
Frowning, Naktu scanned the ground carefully before shifting his attention to the surrounding trees.
"Hmph! How childish." A smirk tugged at his lips as he called out toward the edge of the forest: "Damuge, he’s hiding in the trees! Bring the gun!"
High above, perched precariously on a neighboring red pine, Wang Ping clutched a tuft of white fur atop his head, curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
"What are those two planning now?"
As Wang Ping leaned forward slightly to peer down, the drone strapped to his back brushed against a branch, producing a sharp snap. Startled, Naktu looked up, but the dense foliage hid everything from view.
"Phew..."
Pressing flat against the trunk, Wang Ping felt his heart pounding wildly. Suddenly, a thought struck him.
"Oh right, Chen Bai said this drone connects to the live stream, didn’t he?"
Glancing at the device strapped to his chest, Wang Ping recalled Chen Bai’s instructions. With careful precision, he used his tongue to navigate the phone screen tucked inside the waist pouch. Thankfully, someone—probably Gu Lang—had downloaded the Douyu app onto the phone, making it easy to find. Tapping it open, the live stream connected automatically.
Four hours had passed since the last broadcast ended, and most viewers had long since dispersed. The few remaining were either idly chatting or simply letting the stream run in the background. But when the black screen flickered to life, showing shaky footage of the forest, everyone’s attention snapped back immediately.
"The streamer’s back online!"
"What’s Gu Lang doing now?"
"Maybe there was no signal earlier?"
"Where is this? Why are there only coniferous trees?"
At the same time, notifications alerted Gu Lang’s followers who were still wandering Douyu’s platform. Within minutes, the viewer count surged dramatically.
Satisfied that the stream was live, Wang Ping turned his focus to adjusting the camera settings. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, he couldn’t figure out how to switch perspectives. Then he remembered Chen Bai mentioning something about activating the drone’s camera first.
Scratching the patch of white fur behind his ear, Wang Ping bent down and flipped the drone’s power switch. Instantly, the live feed shifted to the drone’s perspective.
Ah yes, Wang Ping vaguely recalled Gu Lang using the drone earlier to locate water sources. Maybe that’s when he adjusted the camera order.
Locking the phone screen, Wang Ping tossed it back into the pouch and leaned down to check the drone’s lens position. Carefully adjusting the angle, he aimed it directly at the unsuspecting figure standing below.
Back in the live stream, viewers watched as Wang Ping’s furry face filled the screen momentarily before the camera jolted downward, revealing a stranger gripping a knife.
"What is this nonsense? I wanted to see Big Brother Buzz-Cut!"
"Who’s this guy? Did they meet another traveler?"
"Holy crap, why does he have a knife?!"
"This doesn’t look good at all…"
