Chapter 118: Yes, It’s Gu Lang Again…

Shanghai, Baoshan District, Douyu Headquarters.

On the sixth floor of a street-facing office, Chen Bai leaned back in his leather chair, eyes half-closed as he gazed at the computer screen before him. On the monitor, a man wearing a black quick-dry tank top was speaking directly into the camera.

"Remember this," the man said firmly, "Never drink stagnant water in the wild—it's a breeding ground for bacteria. Even a sip could make you sick! Looks like it’s time to keep moving."

Across the screen, streams of comments flooded by: "Damn, that’s sick," "Bro Yang knows so much," and "Learned something new!" Gift effects—rockets, yachts—popped up one after another in dazzling displays.

Chen Bai smiled faintly, nodding with satisfaction. The young man currently streaming was Douyu’s top outdoor broadcaster, hands down the most promising talent Chen had ever discovered. Just then, an alert popped up in the bottom right corner of the screen: Gu Lang has gone live.

The smile froze on Chen Bai’s face before vanishing altogether.

"What took him so long?" Chen muttered under his breath, reluctantly clicking the link to enter Gu Lang’s stream.

The feed loaded, revealing a bird’s-eye view of a scene that left Chen momentarily stunned. A figure unfamiliar to most viewers stood beneath the trees, creating confusion among the audience.

"What’s going on here?" someone typed into the chat.

Underneath the shade of the trees, Naktu had already sheathed his knife and now stood with arms crossed. Moments later, the sound of footsteps echoed from the nearby woods. An older man carrying a shotgun and a woven basket appeared on-screen.

"What’s happening?"

From this angle, it almost looked like someone was secretly filming them. Viewers were baffled, sensing something wasn’t quite right.

"You’re quick," Naktu said in fluent Mongolian slang, extending his hand. "Give me the gun."

Damuge, still breathing heavily from his jog, hesitated instead of complying. He stepped back cautiously, leveling the barrel of his shotgun at Naktu’s chest.

The younger man froze, his brow furrowing as irritation crept into his tone. "Uncle, what do you mean by this?"

"What do I mean?" Damuge sneered, also switching to Mongolian. "Drop your backpack. I’m inspecting it."

Naktu’s eyes widened in disbelief. "You think I’m hiding something? Are you out of your damn mind?"

"Shouldn’t I suspect you?" Damuge retorted coldly, no longer resembling the calm individual he’d been earlier. His voice sharpened. "A lost traveler without even a blade… yet you go through all this trouble? And you’ve got our goods too—are you trying to pull a switcheroo on me?"

"That’s fucking bullshit!" Naktu roared, unsheathing a knife from his waistband and taking two menacing steps forward.

Up in the tree, Wang Ping watched in stunned silence, struggling to keep up with the escalating tension.

"Holy crap," he muttered to himself, "I just wanted to expose their suspicious behavior, but they’re making it way too easy…"

Though their heated exchange was entirely in Mongolian, incomprehensible to everyone watching, the sight of knives and a shotgun made one thing crystal clear: these two weren’t exactly law-abiding citizens.

"Damn, why does this streamer always get into trouble?"

"Who are these guys? Mountain folks nowadays pack heat like this?"

"That shotgun looks real…"

"Shouldn’t we call the cops?"

"Did the streamer call the police?"

"He’s obviously hiding up in the tree. Everyone stay calm—we don’t want any accidental noises tipping them off while we decide what to do."

"Holy smokes, I almost tipped them myself. Scared me witless!"

"Maybe the streamer muted the speaker…"

"Forget arguing about details; someone call the authorities already!"

"But where exactly are they? What should we tell the cops?"

As the chat buzzed with panic, the high-definition drone camera revealed Naktu reluctantly holstering his knife and lowering his backpack. The two men continued to argue fiercely, Damuge’s tone growing increasingly aggressive. Eventually, Naktu snapped, overturning the bag and dumping its contents onto the ground.

A bloodstained white sack tumbled out alongside dried grasses used to conceal the items inside. The metallic tang of blood wafted upward, hitting Wang Ping square in the nose.

"Open it," Damuge commanded coldly.

"Tch."

At this point, Naktu stopped resisting and began unpacking the sack piece by piece. Out came a massive black bear pelt, two sets of bear paws, and plastic-wrapped bear bile and penis.

"Oh my god—they really are poachers!"

Unable to contain his shock, Wang Ping shifted slightly on his branch—and suddenly found himself framed perfectly in the drone’s lens. Half the screen was abruptly blocked by a fluffy little butt.

"I’m screenshotting first, THEN calling the cops!"

"Screenshots first, THEN the police!"

"So cute! Gotta pat it respectfully!"

"Got my screenshot—gonna use it as wallpaper!"

"The guy with the shotgun—is he maybe a cop?"

"Idiot, when have you ever seen a cop with a shotgun?"

Amidst the chaos in the chat, viewers noticed the atmosphere between the two men shift. Damuge lowered his gun and laughed, clapping Naktu on the shoulder. Though Naktu remained visibly upset, the hostility had dissipated.

"Holy crap, not cops!"

"They’re working together!"

"CALL THE POLICE!"

"Calm down, everyone! Only one person needs to report it—don’t overwhelm the officers. Who’s managing the room?"

At that moment, Chen Bai typed into the chat: "Everyone relax. I’ll handle it—I’m calling the police."

He sighed bitterly after sending the message, shaking his head as he picked up his phone and dialed a number.

"Hello? Captain Han? This is Chen Bai from Douyu... Yeah, it’s happened again... Yes, it’s Gu Lang... Hmm, shall I send you the link? Oh, you’re following him too? Great, thank you, Captain Han!"

After hanging up, Chen Bai paused, realizing something troubling. Gu Lang had been roaming the forest all afternoon—how would the police locate him if they didn’t know his exact location?

Thinking quickly, Chen sent Gu Lang a message via WeChat: "Share your location. I’ve already called the police for you."

A crisp notification sounded from above.

"Ding dong! You have a new message. Please check it!"

Wang Ping, who’d been perched on a branch watching the drama unfold, stiffened instantly. "Crap, forgot to turn off notifications..."

Below, both Damuge and Naktu froze, heads snapping upward toward the source of the sound.

"There’s signal here?" Damuge murmured, every hair on his body standing on end.

It was now clear that Gu Lang wasn’t working with Naktu. If there was indeed signal, whoever was hiding up there would undoubtedly call the authorities and share their coordinates. Their carefully concealed poaching route would soon be exposed to the authorities.

"Come out!" Damuge barked, raising his shotgun and firing a shot toward Wang Ping’s direction.

BANG!

Thick clouds of gunpowder smoke billowed from the muzzle as pellets sprayed across the treetops, pelting everything in their path.

Wang Ping yelped, diving behind a thick branch and pressing tightly against the trunk. Pine needles and bark exploded around him, showering the air with debris. The entire canopy shook violently.

Crack!

Glancing over, Wang Ping saw that one of the drone’s propellers had been struck, shattering into fragments that embedded themselves in the upper branches.

"You dare shoot at MY drone?!" Wang Ping’s eyes blazed red with fury.
