Chapter 116: Kill Him!
If you’re out in the wild and suddenly need to use the bathroom but don’t have any toilet paper, what do you do? In moments like these, humans are nothing if not imaginative and resourceful.
Under a gnarled willow tree that had stood for over thirty years, an indescribable mess pooled at the base of its roots, still steaming faintly in the cool air. On the other side of the exposed roots lay a balding woodpecker, sprawled lifelessly on the ground. Its sparse feathers were matted with the same unmentionable substance, and the poor bird emitted a foul odor—it was utterly done for.
A few steps away, hidden among the tall grass, a peculiar creature ambled out with an insolent swagger. The critter’s fur was jet black except for a patch of white running down its head and back. It casually blew a stray feather from between its claws as it strutted forward. Hanging off its back was a small waterproof waist pack, from which protruded the four rotors of a drone.
"Damn it," muttered Wang Ping, feeling his legs wobble slightly. "I should’ve checked Gu Lang’s bag before we left—he probably had some anti-diarrhea meds."
A gentle breeze swept through the forest behind him, carrying with it the oppressive heat trapped beneath the canopy. Suddenly, a whiff of something made him pause. A certain mischievous honey badger halted mid-step, squinting as he turned to look back into the woods.
Deep within the shadows of the trees, something large and predatory seemed to be lurking, watching him with cold, calculating eyes.
By the edge of a nearby pond, Gu Lang chewed on a stale flatbread, his gaze darting nervously around. Damuge and the two others occasionally exchanged whispers in their native tongue. Though Gu Lang didn’t understand them, he couldn’t shake the suspicion that they were plotting something against him.
“They’re probably deciding how to deal with me,” he thought grimly, swallowing a dry lump of bread that scratched his throat. His muscles tensed; he could feel their eyes boring into his back.
Unlike Gu Lang, who struggled to eat, the other three polished off their food quickly. They gulped down water scooped directly from the pond, then patted their stomachs contentedly.
“Alright, let’s move!” Damuge ordered quietly, giving Gu Lang a firm pat on the shoulder that made him flinch.
“Buddy! Time to go! You were so eager to get down the mountain earlier, weren’t you?”
“Uh… yeah…”
Gu Lang hesitated but eventually nodded. As Damuge hoisted his basket and pushed through the bushes along the riverbank, Gu Lang stuffed the last bite of bread into his mouth and stood up—but dragged his feet deliberately, planning to hang back while the others went ahead. If given the chance, he’d bolt.
But the group wasn’t fooled. Before Damuge could say anything, one of the younger men shoved Gu Lang forward, gesturing for him to catch up.
The push sent Gu Lang stumbling. He glared back at the young man, who simply stared back defiantly, jerking his chin toward Damuge. Beside him, Naktu smirked, adjusting his own backpack while keeping a mocking eye on Gu Lang.
Fuming, Gu Lang clenched his fists, biting down hard on his cheek as he reluctantly followed Damuge. Behind him, the two young men muttered something in their language, breaking into raucous laughter.
“Damn it,” Gu Lang seethed internally. “Just wait until I get my hands on you.” With every step, he crushed the underbrush angrily, trying to keep pace with Damuge.
The group formed a tight formation: Damuge led the way, the two young mans brought up the rear, and Gu Lang was sandwiched uncomfortably in the middle. To his left flowed a river nearly five meters wide, while to his right loomed the dense mountainside. If escape became necessary, the only option seemed to be heading deeper into the forest.
After walking for a while, Gu Lang noticed the two men behind him chatting animatedly, seemingly distracted. Seizing the opportunity, he veered to the right and crouched down, pretending to tie his shoelaces.
He untied and retied his hiking boots slowly, buying time. When he finally looked up, the taller young man—the one who had shoved him earlier—was standing right in front of him, smirking condescendingly.
“#@%$^&…” the young man sneered in a language Gu Lang didn’t understand, then abruptly lunged forward, grabbing Gu Lang by the collar and slapping his face lightly.
In that instant, blood rushed to Gu Lang’s head, and his face flushed red with rage.
“Son of a—!”
Through gritted teeth, Gu Lang shot to his feet, grabbed the young man by the shoulders, and drove his knee upward with all his might.
“Ugh…”
The dark-skinned young man’s eyes bulged as his face drained of color. He instinctively released Gu Lang’s collar, collapsing to his knees while clutching his groin.
“Screw you!” Gu Lang hissed under his breath. Glancing ahead to ensure Damuge hadn’t noticed the commotion, he kicked the young man to the ground and sprinted toward the forest.
As the injured man writhed on the ground, veins bulging on his neck, he stared daggers at Gu Lang’s retreating figure. Struggling to shout, he managed only a weak, mosquito-like whimper as Gu Lang disappeared further into the woods.
Gu Lang ran about twenty paces before rounding a tree—and froze. There, emerging from behind the trunk, was Wang Ping, trotting along on stubby legs with the waist pack still strapped to his back.
Man and honey badger locked eyes, both visibly shocked.
“Boss! You’re alive!”
Gu Lang almost cried with relief.
Wang Ping’s furry face darkened instantly.
“For crying out loud, can’t we meet without this kind of drama every single time?”
BANG!
At that exact moment, a gunshot rang out. A hail of pellets tore through the foliage, pelting the area behind Gu Lang with a deafening crackle. Bark and leaves rained down as another voice bellowed from beyond the treeline.
“What the hell, Gu Lang?! Why do you always show up bringing this kind of ‘surprise’ with you?!”
There was no time for pleasantries. Without a word, man and honey badger turned tail and bolted deeper into the forest.
“Who the hell told you to fire that gun?!”
Outside the woods, Damuge snatched the shotgun away from Naktu, his face livid with anger.
Moments earlier, Naktu had been following Damuge when he heard a noise. Turning back, he saw his fallen comrade writhing on the ground and Gu Lang nowhere in sight. Enraged, he yanked the shotgun hidden in Damuge’s basket and fired blindly into the forest without hesitation.
“Sasgo! Are you okay?” Ignoring Damuge, Naktu knelt beside his friend, speaking urgently in their native tongue.
“Kh… kh…”
Sasgo, lying on the ground, drooled uncontrollably, his throat emitting raspy hiccup-like sounds. His bloodshot eyes locked onto Naktu as he growled through clenched teeth: “Naktu… kill him. KILL HIM!!”
