Chapter 101: It Was You Who Wouldn’t Let Me Go

The pendant truly hadn’t been a waste of choice. If not for its effects, Leon would have surely met his end…

Hastily retracting the power of the Sacred Spirit Pendant and restoring the ground that had temporarily turned into a swamp, Leon—his left hand bloody and mutilated—began sprinting toward the exit of the Lion Estate with everything he had.

When he suddenly lost his ability to fly earlier and plummeted from the sky, Leon instinctively grabbed hold of the Sacred Spirit Pendant. He managed to slow his descent just enough while transforming both his landing spot and the surrounding area into a muddy bog.

Though the transformation between solid earth and muck wasn’t as drastic as turning steel into rubber (and thus consumed far less energy than when he’d converted that carriage), the sheer scale of this alteration was over a hundred times greater than before.

And since Leon needed to reserve some strength for escape—and couldn’t afford to completely drain himself—he altered the terms of his “deal” with the Sacred Spirit Pendant. Instead of drawing on stamina or willpower, which recovered quickly, he sacrificed something much harder to regenerate: bodily tissue.

---

The toll it took was no joke. It would take at least two or three months for him to recover fully.

Glancing down at his left hand, now missing five fingernails and stripped of large patches of skin from fingertips to wrist, Leon didn’t bother tending to his wounds. Instead, he shouted breathlessly to the black goat, “Which way has fewer people?”

“East. Head east.”

With the aid of its soul vision, the black goat directed Leon along the least populated route, then added sheepishly, “Uh… about earlier—it’s not like I didn’t warn you. I only realized something was wrong after he made a move”

“Mm-hmm.”

Leon didn’t dwell on it, instead making a mental note to settle the score later. His voice clipped and urgent, he asked, “What exactly is going on with Bobby Lion? Is your heart controlling him, or is he controlling your heart?”

“Well…” The black goat hesitated. “I wouldn’t say ‘control.’ He seems to be an arrogant man with grand ambitions—his compatibility with my heart is uncanny…”

Pausing to think, it continued, “Here’s the thing: my heart must have devoured his original one and taken its place. Technically speaking, you could call it mutual absorption.”

“Mutual absorption?”

“Yes. My heart absorbed pieces of his existence, effectively replacing Bobby Lion—but in return, his personality and desires became ingrained in my heart. If someday my heart finds all its missing parts, my consciousness might eventually consume Bobby’s will. For now, though, they’re completely intertwined.”

Completely intertwined? So that’s how anomalies can be “used”?

Frowning deeply, Leon said, “So what you’re saying is, your heart is him, and he is your heart. There’s no way I can neutralize his abilities by destroying your heart?”

The black goat nodded. “Pretty much. Wait—did you seriously consider destroying my heart?”

“Why not?”

Leon veered off the main path and darted through a secluded garden, heading toward the towering redwood tree near the estate’s entrance. Without breaking stride, he shot back, “You’re upset because I want to destroy your heart—but your heart wants to erase your very existence. Which do you find harder to accept?”

“…”

If put that way, the heart did seem more despicable.

Realizing what awaited them if caught by Bobby, the black goat suddenly became ten times more diligent, scanning every approaching soul without pause. Guided by its insights and bolstered by the parkour badge’s abilities, Leon used the complex terrain of the Lion Estate to evade wave after wave of pursuers, finally bursting out of the gates and reaching the massive redwood tree. But—

Thud.

Just ten steps away from the redwood, Leon collided with an invisible barrier. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t cross it. Both man and goat fell silent.

“Leon… I think we’re done for…”

Watching its heart slowly approach, flanked by hundreds of souls, the black goat muttered bitterly, “This bastard’s power is only a third of what it once was, but he hasn’t faced real opposition in ages. Plus, he found an incredibly compatible host. By leeching off the Lion family, he’s pushed his remaining abilities to the limit.”

“Damn it. If I’d known things would turn out like this, I should’ve sucked up to a true god, recruited followers daily, and aimed for a title like Sacred Spirit or something. Even if I got swallowed in the end, I could’ve made life miserable for him. Now look at me—I’m handing over prime meat to a dog.”

After ranting for a bit, noticing Leon hadn’t spoken, the black goat prodded, “Why aren’t you saying anything? We’re about to die! Aren’t you going to curse him out?”

“No.”

Rejecting the black goat’s invitation to vent, Leon silently retrieved a rope and tightly bound the creature to his side. Squinting slightly, he said, “Instead of cursing him, I’d rather make one last attempt to fight back.”

Using the black goat’s soul vision to survey the estate, Leon gazed upon the hundreds of rotting, purplish-black souls scattered across the six or seven hectares of land. Opening his interface, he checked the blinking prompts for [Friend of Demons] and [Devotee].

One required sinful souls; the other demanded non-Golden Scale cultists. Perfect. This place had plenty of both.

---

Oh? Still trying to resist?

Though his perception abilities were weaker than those of the black goat—who could effortlessly stir malevolence within others—Bobby Lion, having merged with the goat’s heart, still possessed his own form of soul vision.

From beneath the redwood, he watched as the two fleeing souls veered away, attempting to circle around. Chuckling derisively, the young man decided against pursuing them directly. Instead, he stayed rooted under the tree, using his powers to remotely command the forces within the Lion Estate to corner the pair like rats.

But to his surprise, despite being visibly exhausted—his soul flame flickering weakly—the Cleansing Bureau agent refused to be captured. Instead, he darted wildly throughout the estate, unleashing a frenzy of slaughter.

One… two… five…

Ten… twenty… fifty…

As dark flames winked out rapidly in his soul vision, the part of Bobby that belonged to the Lion family grew increasingly agitated.

A few dozen casualties meant little to the vast Lion clan—they could easily replenish their numbers. But the agent seemed to be targeting key members of the family hierarchy. Of the fifty-plus victims so far, nearly half were mid-to-high-level managers of the family businesses or held public offices in various departments of the kingdom.

Individually, none of these individuals were indispensable. Collectively, however, they formed the foundation of the Lion family’s power. Without them, the family would lose its political voice, forfeit support from influential sectors, and see most of its industries grind to a halt. The entire family would collapse at an unimaginable speed.
