Chapter 57: A Rude Awakening

To the north of the camp, a row of metal houses with a red asbestos roof stood in a line. One of them still had its lights on.

This was the office of the highest-ranking officer in the camp.

At this moment, the office was filled with smoke, and several people were gathered around Colonel’s desk—some sitting, some standing.

Apart from Colonel seated at the desk, there was also Chief Biggs, who had driven all the way from Makuyuni that day; Officer Atugo and Kumi, who had been on duty the night Gu Lang’s vehicle ran through the checkpoint; a representative from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area; and Chief Blake from Karatu.

Of course, each group had come with different intentions. The ones from Makuyuni were obviously here for "Third Brother Gu," but upon arriving, they realized things weren’t as straightforward as they’d assumed.

Colonel had detained Gu Lang out of a sense of responsibility, but when these officers arrived, he flatly refused their request to take over the case. After all, Zhang Jianming had repeatedly hinted—both subtly and not-so-subtly—that local police in Africa could be notoriously corrupt, and he didn’t want this situation escalating into an international incident.

In Tanzania, due to systemic issues, the police operate under a slightly different model: fines.

Tanzanian police are known for their industriousness—a quality starkly at odds with the general population—but this industriousness isn’t directed toward fighting crime. Instead, it’s focused on generating revenue through constant fining on the streets.

So, if you’re driving in Africa and a cop pulls you over, accusing you of speeding when you clearly weren’t, it’s obvious what they’re after—money.

Given this social context, Zhang Jianming had specifically warned Colonel. The message was clear: Don’t let things spiral out of control, or you’ll regret it!

Thus, both Chief Biggs and the others present now found themselves in a bit of a bind. They had thought they were dealing with an easy mark, rushing all the way from Makuyuni, only to discover that this particular Chinese national was untouchable.

The representatives from Karatu had a clearer objective: to verify the identities of the three poachers who had been brought back, lock them up or execute them as necessary.

However, because Adit had confessed that these men intended to kill Gu Lang, the matter once again involved this troublesome “foreign friend.” As such, the two groups decided to collaborate and discuss how best to question Gu Lang.

Just then, a soldier knocked on the door and entered at Colonel’s signal. He saluted and reported, “Sir, the Chinese man is demanding food.”

“Hmm?”

Not just Colonel, but everyone in the room turned to look at the soldier in surprise.

Colonel’s face darkened—not that it was easy to tell given his complexion—but the growing anger was palpable.

“Who denied him food? Didn’t I order meals to be delivered on time?” Colonel barked.

“Uh…”

The soldier looked utterly confused, thinking, I’m just the messenger! Who am I supposed to ask?

“You go relay my orders again! Tell the guards that unless he leaves the room, the Chinese man can do whatever he wants without interference. Aside from phone calls, try to accommodate any other requests. Now go!”

Though Colonel knew he shouldn’t vent his frustration on a low-ranking soldier, he still scolded him harshly before waving him away.

The policemen exchanged glances, their expressions tinged with suspicion.

Damn it! Pretending to yell at the soldier while actually sending us a message, huh? And using the Chinese embassy as leverage—are you sure this isn’t because you’ve already taken bribes?

It wasn’t long before Gu Lang saw a black chef wearing a dirty, yellow-stained apron over his camouflage uniform, carrying a large food container, grumbling loudly as he followed a soldier.

“This is more like it! You don’t starve someone and then taunt them with an empty lunchbox!” Gu Lang smirked, tipping his chin toward the guard watching him. The guard turned away, pretending not to see.

When the chef reached him, still fuming from being reprimanded earlier, he thrust the food container into Gu Lang’s hands, muttering something incomprehensible. Judging by the tone, it probably wasn’t complimentary.

“Hey, wait! Take this empty one back!”

Gu Lang stopped the chef, holding out the empty lunchbox Wang Ping had finished, sarcastically mocking in English, “Let’s forget about what happened before, but remember to bring me food on time in the future!”

“!”

The chef, already furious about being falsely accused of not delivering food, nearly popped his eyes out of their sockets. The accompanying soldier also looked uneasy, instinctively glancing at the guard. The guard shrugged, signaling it wasn’t his problem.

Though the chef didn’t understand English, he recognized the lunchbox. He had personally packed the meal, even adding extra meat slices to the soup. Yet this ungrateful wretch had eaten everything and still dared accuse him of neglect?

Bound by Colonel’s warning, neither the chef nor the guards dared retaliate. Trembling with rage, the chef’s mind overflowed with creative insults.

After catching his breath, he snatched the empty lunchbox from Gu Lang and stormed off. But after a few steps, unable to let it go, he turned back and muttered in broken tones, “Fuck your mother!”

“What?”

Gu Lang froze mid-step, holding the lunchbox, stunned by the vaguely familiar phrase.

Having vented, the chef felt somewhat relieved and ignored Gu Lang’s reaction, hurrying away. He couldn’t stand staying in this place a second longer.

“What did he say?”

Shaking his head, Gu Lang muttered in confusion and returned to his room. After securing the door with a table, he picked up the heavy lunchbox, ready to eat.

But just as he placed his hand on the lid to open it, realization struck. That phrase… sounded eerily similar to a classic Chinese insult.

“Holy shit! That black guy cursed me in Chinese?” Gu Lang gaped, unsure whether to feel offended or proud. Curiosity piqued, he wondered where the man had learned that phrase.

Clang!

Suddenly, a sound came from the bed behind him, startling Gu Lang.

“What’s going on? Isn’t this supposed to be a single room? Is someone here?”

Forgetting about eating, Gu Lang scanned the room, eventually grabbing the lunchbox lid and cautiously approaching the bed.

From where he stood, the lower bunk was clearly empty except for a thin military blanket. The upper bunk appeared vacant too, save for the obscured area behind the railing.

Standing on tiptoe, Gu Lang peered over the edge of the upper bunk.

What he saw made him drop the lid, which clattered loudly to the floor.

Wang Ping lay sprawled, sleeping soundly in the middle of the upper bunk. His mouth was slightly open, his belly rising and falling rhythmically. Occasionally, his body twitched with each breath. The noise Gu Lang heard earlier came from Wang Ping’s claws scraping against the metal railing as he shifted in his sleep.

Hearing the clatter, Wang Ping’s small ears twitched beneath his fur. He opened his eyes and locked gazes with Gu Lang.

Outside, the guard heard the commotion but remembered Colonel’s instructions: let the guy do whatever he wants. Rolling his eyes, he resumed pretending nothing had happened.
