Chapter 56: This is Too Much…

At this moment, Gu Lang was not in his room but in the medical office on the southern side of the camp.

This was something Zhang Jianming had arranged—or rather, demanded—before he left.

After all, Gu Lang was merely a suspect, not a prisoner. Since Colonel decided to detain him temporarily, it wasn’t unreasonable to take care of his basic physical recovery and treat his wounds, right?

Thus, after arranging for someone to temporarily guard Gu Lang’s room, Gu Lang hadn’t even had a chance to eat before he was taken to the medical office. At the doctor's request, he stripped off all his clothes and assumed various humiliating poses to facilitate the examination of his wounds and the application of medicine.

Perhaps because the doctor was accustomed to treating soldiers, his movements were far from gentle, and occasional screams could be heard from the medical office.

Those unfamiliar with the situation might have thought that an interrogation was taking place inside.

Of course, there were interrogations happening as well. In the detention room on the western side of the camp, Davis was working overtime.

In front of him, Adit was handcuffed to a chair fixed to the ground. His shoes had been removed, and his legs were propped up high on a table in front of him.

The two men with knife scars were now so swollen that they no longer had necks, let alone the ability to speak. Therefore, the only hope now rested on Adit to reveal any relevant information. For example, whether anyone in their gang had stolen a jeep and attempted to break through a checkpoint.

At this point, Adit, who had cried himself nearly unconscious, twitched uncontrollably, muttering, "I don’t know... I don’t know! I didn’t steal any car... Who the hell is Gu Lang? Gu Lang..."

"You’re quite the tough guy, aren’t you?" Davis shrugged, picked up a small hammer from the table, turned it around, and jabbed the handle hard into the sole of Adit’s foot resting on the table.

"Ah ah~~~"

Using the cover of vehicles and greenery in the camp, Wang Ping followed a certain scent trail and eventually found the temporary quarters assigned to Gu Lang.

The guards at the door had gone to the medical office, so Wang Ping simply climbed in through the window with iron bars without hesitation.

By local residential standards, the room's conditions were relatively good. It was clear that they weren’t just going through the motions for Zhang Jianming.

There was a bunk bed inside—an upper and lower bunk—and a desk where Gu Lang’s backpack containing his clothes and wallet sat. However, the two boxes containing the tablet and satellite signal receiver were missing, likely confiscated temporarily.

There was also a small partitioned area inside the room. Wang Ping peeked in and found a small bathroom equipped with a showerhead. There was no toilet, only a squatting pan, with a bucket placed beside it.

It couldn’t compare to a hotel, of course, but compared to a zoo or the wilderness, this place was already paradise.

Not bothering to ponder why Gu Lang would stay here, Wang Ping, whose limbs were almost cramping from clinging to the bumper all the way, was eager to take a bath and then get some much-needed rest.

Just then, footsteps echoed outside the door.

Wang Ping hid in the bathroom and peered out through the crack in the door.

The door creaked open, and a soldier dressed in camouflage fatigues entered, carrying a food container. He placed the container on the desk and then turned to leave.

Once the footsteps faded away, Wang Ping scurried out of the bathroom and climbed up along the table leg.

The food container was a military-green thermos box, still warm to the touch.

“Who would have thought that this guy has connections with the military? Should I eat first?”

At this thought, Wang Ping suddenly felt hungry. His stomach was more attuned to the concept of seizing opportunities and acting when necessary. The mere thought of eating triggered a cacophony of growls from his stomach, each sound more urgent and louder than the last.

“Well, food first!”

Wang Ping wasted no time. Sitting on the tabletop, he wrapped his legs around the cylindrical food container and used both front paws to lift the tightly sealed lid after much effort.

If one were to rank the daily foods of civilians worldwide, China would undoubtedly stand atop the pyramid, laughing triumphantly over others.

After all, neither British tea snacks nor French gourmet meals are everyday fare. Chinese cuisine, however, can turn even the simplest ingredients into culinary art.

Perhaps only the Chinese would traverse several blocks just to buy scallions for stir-frying.

As for Tanzania, where such meal standards hover near the bottom of the pyramid, unless dining at a luxury hotel, meals were purely for sustenance.

Sure enough, in the upper compartment of the food container lay three cornmeal pancakes, making Wang Ping suspect that the cook might have mixed sand into them. Their appearance was so dark that it made one question life itself.

In the lower compartment was a small amount of soup, with a few slices of mutton and a large chunk of some unknown vegetable floating inside. To Wang Ping’s surprise, this was actually a meat soup.

His hopeful expression instantly turned to disdain, but considering they were in Africa, he decided to make do. At least it was better than the unseasoned barbecue in the wild.

Comforting himself, Wang Ping grabbed a corn pancake and wolfed it down, occasionally lifting the entire food container to pour some broth into his mouth.

When Gu Lang emerged from the medical office, the camp was already lit up.

Many of his minor wounds had shown signs of inflammation over the past two days, so disinfecting them took considerable time. They even had to restrain Gu Lang, who screamed like a pig being slaughtered.

Once finished, the doctor eagerly shed his white coat and ran towards the cafeteria, cursing rhythmically along the way.

Currently, aside from the prisoners in the detention cells, Gu Lang was probably the only one in the camp receiving room service.

Upon being informed that dinner had been delivered to his room, Gu Lang, who had expended a lot of energy, wobbled back to his room on legs that stung from the disinfectant. The soldier guarding him escorted him to the door and resumed his post outside.

After fumbling to turn on the light, Gu Lang first peeked outside through the door. Seeing the soldier still standing watch outside, he sighed involuntarily.

Although he had no intention of escaping, being watched like this still made him uneasy.

Turning to look inside the room, sure enough, there was a food container on the desk.

With thick layers of bandages wrapped around his body, a bath was out of the question. Gu Lang went to the bathroom, washed his face hastily, and touched his messy beard in the mirror. Then he turned to search for a razor in the room.

However, as soon as he turned around, he froze.

Under the showerhead was a noticeable puddle reflecting the light, and the floor was littered with many black hairs.

Gu Lang: ...

Wasn’t this supposed to be a private room? Could it be that the bathroom was communal?

The thought of a black man opening his door in the middle of the night to use the bathroom made Gu Lang feel uneasy.

Hastily running to the door, Gu Lang secured the latch and, with great effort, moved the desk to block the door before finally breathing a sigh of relief.

Glancing down at the food container on the table, Gu Lang hesitated for a moment before bending down to open it. Then he froze again.

Because food was precious in the wild, Wang Ping rarely wasted any, even if it tasted bad.

Moreover, this was prepared in a kitchen. For Wang Ping, who had just regained access to hot meals, it was already a supreme delicacy.

So it wasn’t just the corn pancakes; Wang Ping hadn’t left a single drop of soup. The silver metal lining of the food container reflected Wang Ping’s darkened face, gleaming brightly.

“Damn it, this is too much…”

Gu Lang’s face was filled with sorrow and indignation.

Not feeding him was one thing, but using an empty food container to humiliate him?

Struggling once again to move the desk, Gu Lang flung open the door and angrily shouted at the guard outside in English, “You’ve gone too far! I’m not a prisoner, so why are you treating me like this? I’m hungry! I want to eat!”
