Chapter 56: High-Speed Regeneration
"How's that possible?" At first, Arroz couldn’t believe his eyes either. But after Housen waved his hands in front of him a few times with an air of smugness, he too was utterly stunned.
Housen's hands were smooth and unblemished, as if they had never been injured at all.
"This can't be... Are you even human?" Arroz blurted out.
"You're the one who's not human! None of your family is!" Housen shot back, glaring daggers at him.
"But how can you heal so fast? It’s only been two or three minutes, and your wounds are already healed!"
Though Housen’s injuries were minor—his longest cut barely half an inch—and insignificant compared to his hulking frame, humans were still flesh and blood. How could anyone possess such regenerative abilities? Even Morris slaves, who sacrificed their lifespans for accelerated metabolism, couldn’t recover this quickly.
Without a word, Tang Fang stepped forward, grabbed Housen’s arm, whipped out a small blade, and slashed it across Housen’s hand before he could react.
Housen hadn’t expected Tang Fang to act so suddenly. By the time he tried to dodge, it was too late. The sharp blade left a half-inch gash on the back of his hand, and blood spurted out instantly.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Housen shouted.
"Running an experiment," Tang Fang replied coolly.
"Why didn’t you use him for the experiment?" Housen yelled, pointing angrily at Arroz.
"Do you want to stay human, or turn into some kind of monster?"
"Of course I want to stay human!"
"Then shut up!"
"..."
Housen wilted under Tang Fang’s glare, allowing himself to be held by the arm. One second, two seconds… ten seconds, thirty seconds… A full minute passed. The bleeding slowed, and the wound began to close visibly before their eyes.
After about three or four minutes, the scar faded completely, leaving no trace behind.
"Incredible!" Arroz exclaimed in awe.
But Housen didn’t share the sentiment. He frowned, looking troubled. "I don’t want to end up like that ugly one-eyed monster."
His words hung heavy in the air. Tang Fang furrowed his brow and drew the knife along the centerline of his own palm, creating a half-inch cut.
"What are you doing now?" Both Housen and Arroz gasped. Housen quickly snatched the knife away. "I forgive you, alright? You don’t have to feel guilty."
Tang Fang ignored him, his eyes glued to the fresh wound on his hand.
One minute, two minutes… The expressions on Housen and Arroz’s faces grew increasingly incredulous.
"Wait, don’t tell me you’ve been cursed by the monster too?"
Tang Fang didn’t respond but turned to look at Arroz instead. As if reading his mind, Arroz swiftly picked up the knife and made a similar incision on his own palm. Blood oozed slowly, but over time, the torn flesh began to knit itself back together until it was fully restored.
"Oh, great Father above, Your fairness astounds me. Amen!" Housen declared dramatically.
"Housen, do you have to act cute all the time? Can’t you take anything seriously?" Arroz snapped, shooting him a glare before turning to Tang Fang with a grimace. "What’s really going on here?"
Tang Fang sighed deeply, wiping his face with his hand. He then held out the dried blood flakes toward them. "Maybe Housen’s right. Maybe we’ve been cursed by the one-eyed monster."
During the final moments when the one-eyed monster clung to life, the three of them had removed their helmets for easier communication, thinking the danger had passed. No one anticipated that the creature’s body would explode into organic shrapnel, splattering its remains all over them. Perhaps that was when something invisible infiltrated their cells, altering their physiology.
Housen shuddered violently, clutching his arms tightly. "Tang Fang, don’t scare me like that. I’m not afraid of dying, but I definitely don’t want to turn into some grotesque monster."
"Hold on." Tang Fang paused thoughtfully, then descended from the platform and approached a nearby Zerg unit—a Queen. He handed her samples of both his blood and the one-eyed monster's blood.
When it came to matters involving genetic structures, the Zerg units were unparalleled experts. As a high-ranking commander imbued with genes from Terran, Protoss, and Zerg by the Queen of Blades herself, the Queen was practically a grandmaster in genetic engineering.
Following Tang Fang’s instructions, the Queen ingested the two blood samples. About half an hour later, information flooded into Tang Fang’s mind.
First came three clear DNA models: the first representing a normal human, the second belonging to the one-eyed monster, and the third his own.
The one-eyed monster's DNA model immediately caught his attention. Its triple-helix structure was far more complex and twisted than anything found in humans. With his limited knowledge as a lowly soldier and corporate office worker, Tang Fang couldn’t decipher any groundbreaking conclusions. His primary concern was his own safety.
Shifting his focus to his own DNA sequence, he noticed something alarming. Marked by the Queen, certain strands of his DNA had mutated, forming a protrusion in the middle of the ladder-like structure. It bore a resemblance to the one-eyed monster's DNA but wasn’t identical upon closer inspection.
"What am I supposed to do with this? I need to know what effects these genetic mutations will have on my body," Tang Fang muttered impatiently.
Ignoring his complaint, the Queen sent another message: "The structural changes in your DNA resemble those of the Zerg Strain W-809 main chain. This mutation is classified as beneficial evolution. You will gain rapid regeneration capabilities."
"Beneficial evolution? So we won’t turn into hideous monsters like the one-eyed monster?"
"Not entirely impossible. Probability: approximately 0.0000000001865%."
At first, Tang Fang’s heart nearly stopped, but by the end of the explanation, he felt like slapping the overly literal creature.
"So, the one-eyed monster's ‘curse’ hasn’t harmed us—it’s actually given us a blessing in disguise? All three of us gained rapid regeneration?"
"Not without consequences."
Tang Fang froze, a chill running down his spine.
"When severe tissue damage occurs, the rapid regeneration process may cause side effects, such as extreme hunger, depression, weakness..."
"Forget it," Tang Fang muttered, rolling his eyes. He dismissed the rest of the details outright. What nonsense! If someone could bounce back from critical injuries like nothing happened, they wouldn’t even be human anymore!
Based on the Queen’s feedback, the three of them had acquired regenerative abilities akin to those of the Zerg units—but not without cost. Severe injuries would require massive amounts of nutrients to recover fully.
In short, unless they suffered fatal blows like decapitation or a pierced heart, damaged tissues would regenerate rapidly until complete recovery.
Satisfied with the answer, Tang Fang waved his hand, recalling all units into system space. After issuing repair orders for the powered armor to the SCV, he prepared to share the good news with Housen and Arroz. However, a glance at the resource readings in the upper-left corner startled him..
