Chapter 47: From Rags to Riches
Boom! A grenade exploded against the ceiling.
The corridor was incredibly sturdy, and the explosion didn’t leave a scratch on the walls. However, the Bat Demons at the rear of the group weren’t so lucky. Shrapnel tore through their bodies, opening countless wounds, and their speed plummeted by half. Before they could recover, a volley of bullets from the Marines shredded them into a bloody mess, sending their limp bodies crashing to the ground with a sickening thud.
The seven Zealots surged forward, their energy blades stabbing down like rain, turning the fallen Bat Demons into pincushions.
Boom! Boom! Five Marauders unleashed their Concussive Shells, the grenades detonating like thunder among the enemy ranks. One after another, Bat Demons plummeted from the air like dumplings falling from the sky.
The cacophony of explosions, gunfire, and the shrieks of dying Bat Demons filled the corridor, echoing off the walls.
"Hahahaha! Come on, bitches! Where’s that cockiness now? Don’t run, cowards!" Housen’s voice boomed through the corridor, his excitement reaching a fever pitch.
"Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three… thirty-two, thirty-three…"
Tang Fang walked steadily, counting under his breath. By the time the trio followed the Zealots back to the entrance of the massive structure, the last Bat Demon had fallen from the ceiling, only to be riddled with bullets by the Marines beneath it.
The mineral count stabilized at 3910, while the gas count settled at 1420.
With a satisfied smile, Tang Fang ordered two Queens to heal the Terran soldiers who had used Stimpacks. Once the troops were patched up, he gestured for Arroz and Housen to follow him deeper into the room.
Aside from the faint echoes of their footsteps, the room was eerily silent. The cone-shaped machine in the center and the "particle colliders" on either side hummed quietly, without much noise. Streams of violet electricity flowed along the elongated "diodes," while golden liquid surged through transparent crystal pipes like an endless tide, rushing toward some distant destination.
Unlike Arroz and Housen, Tang Fang kept most of his attention fixed on the ceiling. He couldn’t help but hope for another swarm of Bat Demons.
After walking further, the machinery stretched endlessly before them, seemingly without end. But then Tang Fang’s lips curled into a grin. In the distance, hanging from the ceiling, were fourteen Bat Demons. Though their numbers were small, this confirmed one thing: as long as they kept moving forward, there would be more surprises waiting for them.
At the same moment Tang Fang spotted them, the Bat Demons noticed the intruders below. Their eyes snapped open, revealing sharp fangs dripping with menace.
But before they could act, Tang Fang’s group struck first. Spines, bone spikes, grenades, and metal spikes flew in waves, overwhelming the low-intelligence creatures. Chaos erupted as several Bat Demons flapped their wings and dropped from the ceiling, narrowly dodging incoming grenades only to be impaled by the bone spike, leaving gaping holes in their abdomens.
One by one, the Bat Demons fell from the air, only to be mercilessly hacked apart by the Zealots below.
In just four or five minutes, thirteen Bat Demon corpses littered the ground. One managed to escape deeper into the room, but Tang Fang didn’t bother wasting Stimpacks on it. Knowing they’d eventually catch up, he let it go.
Thirteen Bat Demon corpses translated to 715 minerals and 195 gas.
Recalling the Queens and Spine Crawler, Tang Fang grinned and pressed onward. Beside him, Arroz and Housen’s jaws hung slack. The more monsters they encountered, the happier Tang Fang seemed to become. What kind of person was this? Just what kind of man could derive such joy from slaughter?
An hour later, after sweeping through the structure like a band of bandits, they left behind 124 Bat Demon corpses. By now, Tang Fang’s resource totals had reached staggering heights: 11,445 minerals and 3,475 gas. Over ten thousand minerals—what did that even mean? Tang Fang felt like a peasant who had suddenly become a tycoon. Gone were the days of scraping by on scraps.
Roach Warren? Build it! Twilight Council? Build it! Queens? Two weren’t enough—let’s add ten more. Spine Crawler? One wasn’t enough to hold the line—better make it a dozen. Zerglings? Maybe start with twenty.
Marines? Build a platoon. Marauders? Another platoon. Reapers? The terrain wasn’t ideal, so maybe later. Zealots? Double their numbers.
As resources flowed out like water, the size of Tang Fang’s forces grew exponentially.
On the system interface, his current units were as follows:
Zerg Structures: Hatchery, Spawning Pool, Roach Warren.
Zerg Units: 1 Drone, 12 Queens, 6 Spine Crawlers, 20 Zerglings, 5 Overlords (34/42 supply).
Terran Structures: Command Center, 9 Supply Depots, Barracks, Tech Lab.
Terran Units: 1 SCV, 24 Marines, 24 Marauders, 1 Reaper (74/82 supply).
Protoss Structures: Nexus, 3 Pylons, Gateway, Twilight Council.
Protoss Units: 1 Probe, 14 Zealots (29/34 supply).
As for resources, they had dwindled to 3045 minerals and 2900 gas.
Spending 8400 minerals and 575 gas in one go would have shattered his heart in the past, but now he didn’t bat an eye. Looking ahead, the vast structure seemed endless. Who knew how many Bat Demons still awaited them? Money came as quickly as it went. With his forces growing stronger by the minute, Tang Fang felt confident enough to take on an infantry brigade from the Silverwing Tempest Division or even an armored battalion from the 3789th Regiment.
Arroz and Housen stared in disbelief. Watching Tang Fang conjure units out of thin air, they couldn’t help but marvel at the transformation. Back on the surface, they had only a handful of troops. Now? Half a company’s worth of soldiers stood at their disposal. And that was just the numbers—thinking about their actual combat power sent shivers down their spines.
Housen suddenly felt a renewed sense of hope for life.
As for Arroz, well, he had gone completely numb.
"Should I produce some more Roaches?" Tang Fang mused, chin resting on his hand.
Before he could finish his thought, Housen grabbed him by the arm and pointed at a Marauder. "Tang Fang, remember our deal? You promised to get me one of those suits!"
"Oh, you’re still hung up on the Marauder armor?" Tang Fang chuckled, shaking his head. "Alright, hold on."
He issued a command in the system interface to produce a new Marauder, then ordered the nearest one to disassemble its armor. Removing the cumbersome suit was a painstaking process, taking a full ten minutes to dismantle all the components.
Tang Fang and Arroz curiously examined the armor modules, while Housen ran over to the now half-naked bio-soldier, shamelessly patting him down. "So these guys are just like us!"
"Of course," Tang Fang rolled his eyes. According to the official game lore, Terran bio-units were prisoners or captives subjected to mental conditioning. They felt no pain, no emotion—only obedience to orders.
"Haha." Ignoring Tang Fang’s disdainful look, Housen pinched the bio-soldier’s cheek before turning to the pile of armor pieces. He inspected each part with giddy enthusiasm, tail wagging like a happy dog.
Once Tang Fang recalled the bio-soldier into the system space, Housen began suiting up. With Arroz’s help, it took fifteen minutes to fully assemble the armor.
"Cooling unit, microchip processor, vanadium alloy plating, K-12 quad-barrel grenade launcher, Judicator grenades… This is incredible! I feel unstoppable! Compared to this ‘Marauder’ powered armor, the Empire’s ‘Guardian Knight’ suits are nothing but junk!" Housen sounded like a cartoonish superhero, his voice brimming with exaggerated bravado. "Arroz, do you know what I just found? It’s powered by a miniature fusion reactor! Oh my god, nuclear-powered armor! The kind of tech you’d expect on a starship, and here it is on a suit of armor! Do you know how fast I can run now? 90 kilometers per hour! That’s faster than a main battle tank! This isn’t powered armor—it’s a humanoid war machine!"
"Arroz, do you want one too?" Tang Fang asked with a smirk, ignoring Housen’s theatrics over the comms.
In a world where fuel cells were still the primary power source for exosuits, wearing a nuclear-powered suit was a luxury beyond imagination.
Arroz hesitated, glancing between the Marauders, Marines, and Reapers. Finally, he pointed to a nearby Marine. "I’ll take that one. It looks more comfortable."
"Alright."
With a single command, the Marine quickly stripped off his armor in just three minutes.
Arroz carefully observed every movement before donning the suit himself. Without assistance, he managed to put it on in just two minutes.
"How did you do it so fast?" Housen gawked, his voice muffled by the helmet.
Arroz tapped the exterior of his "Marine Armor," flipped open the visor, and spat out a half-smoked cigar. He gave Housen a middle finger. "Because you’re an idiot!"
Tang Fang nearly burst out laughing.
"You old fart, you dare insult me? I’ll blow you up with a grenade!"
Arroz shrugged, unfazed.
"Enough bickering. Let’s keep moving," Tang Fang said, recalling the bio-soldier into the system and issuing commands to replenish his forces.
Arroz hefted his C-14 "Impaler" gauss rifle and stepped forward under Housen’s piercing gaze.
"Why aren’t you changing your gear?" Housen asked as he passed Tang Fang.
"Me?" Tang Fang chuckled. "Not interested."
It wasn’t that he didn’t want new equipment—he simply had other plans. First, wearing the "Guardian Knight" armor allowed him to deceive the military while executing his secret plan. Second, the item he truly desired hadn’t appeared yet. With Tang Fang’s high standards for aesthetics, he had no interest in the mass-produced "Marauder" or "Marine" suits. As for the Reapers? Forget it—their masks were hideous.
The trio continued onward. After a while, Arroz, who was leading the way, suddenly stopped.
"What’s wrong?" Housen asked.
"Listen," Arroz’s voice came through the comms, tinged with unease.
Tang Fang frowned and strained his ears.
Thump, thump. A heartbeat-like rhythm echoed through the air, accompanied by the Bat Demons’ signature growls and a strange "pfft" sound, like a Queen spraying nourishing fluid.
"What is that?" The three exchanged glances.
"Let’s check it out," Tang Fang whispered. To avoid alarming whatever lay ahead, he recalled his Protoss forces. The trio slowed their pace, treading cautiously.
After a few tense moments, Housen and Arroz abruptly froze in place.
"Why did you stop?" Tang Fang asked, puzzled.
When he peered past their shoulders, a chill ran down his spine.
