Chapter 48: The Divine Bees Descend
The return journey was a bit slow, mainly because Rosette refused to let Wang Ping get within two meters of her while he was carrying the beehive.
A kilometer’s distance might not seem like much, but for Wang Ping’s stubby little legs—barely twenty centimeters long—it felt like running a marathon. He nearly shed tears from exhaustion.
Wang Ping maliciously speculated that Rosette must have had some traumatic experience with bees during her youth—probably a particularly nasty sting. Even though Wang Ping had wrapped the hive in leaves to muffle the sound, as soon as the faint "buzzing" approached, Rosette would leap into the air, terrified.
And when she leapt, she really leapt. It wasn’t an exaggeration. Her spring-like limbs propelled her at least two meters off the ground, leaving Wang Ping marveling at the anatomy of feline creatures.
But even without Rosette as his mount, Wang Ping didn’t dare slack off. His short legs churned like pistons as he sprinted back in the direction they’d come from.
This urgency wasn’t without reason. Just moments ago, two more gunshots had echoed through the forest.
Judging by the sound, they seemed distant—likely coming from the northern plains. Though it wasn’t certain the poachers were attacking, what if Gu Lang had some brain malfunction and wandered out onto the plains?
Wang Ping wasn’t willing to take that gamble, especially when it came to Gu Lang’s questionable decision-making.
Of course, it wasn’t just Wang Ping who was startled. At the moment the gunshots rang out, both Gu Lang, still hiding in the woods, and the poachers were equally baffled.
Let’s rewind to before Gu Lang was ambushed.
After seeing off the big shots, Adit began dismantling the tent with a sigh, silently mourning the loss of his now-dead phone for a few seconds.
Unlike Tuka’s hesitation, the barely-20-year-old Adit was eager to join them on their “job.” But this time, there was a shortage of someone to guard the camp, so Scarface allowed Tuka to bring in a newcomer—Adit. However, his role was strictly limited to watching over the camp.
“Where am I any worse than those two white guys? How dare they look down on me! F**k!”
Muttering under his breath, Adit hastily rolled up the canvas tent and tossed it into the back of the pickup truck.
At this point, the rain intensified, and Adit couldn’t be bothered to retrieve the cooking pot from the campfire rack. He quickly retreated into the vehicle.
“Ahh, so bored!” Patting his empty pockets, Adit stared out at the rain-soaked scenery, feeling increasingly irritable. Without his phone, time suddenly stretched endlessly.
When the first gunshot rang out from Tuka’s direction, Adit was busy calculating inside the car.
He was estimating the profits from this trip.
The two tusks in the back of the truck were in excellent condition, each over two meters long and weighing more than 60 kilograms combined. According to Scarface, he knew an international buyer willing to pay $200 per kilogram.
That meant these tusks could fetch at least $12,000. After deducting supposed losses and costs, Tuka and the two white guys would each get 20%, Scarface himself would take 30%, and Adit? A measly 10%—just $1,000.
As for costs, there wasn’t actually any. This time, all the firearms were brought by the group, and the car was something they reused repeatedly. Adit suspected the missing $2,000 would probably end up in Scarface’s pocket. He couldn’t help thinking of his phone again.
His brand-new Huawei, worth $400…
“Ahh…” Adit clutched his chest.
Damn, it hurt so much!
Just then, the gunfire in the distant forest grew more intense.
“Did they encounter trouble?” Adit gazed toward the eastern woods, lost in thought.
At that moment, a herd of elephants appeared in his line of sight.
This was a large herd, with two male elephants guarding the matriarch. Each stood at least four meters tall, their long tusks gleaming white under the rain. Adit’s mouth watered at the sight.
How much could tusks like those fetch?
Of course, it was just wishful thinking. Despite his name sounding like the English word for "idiot," Adit wasn’t stupid.
A herd of this size—over a hundred elephants—would only be challenged by mercenaries armed to the teeth.
Still, Adit made no move to hide. Elephants, despite their size, were generally docile unless provoked.
Besides, it might have something to do with Scarface taking the car keys.
After all, Adit wasn’t Scarface’s son. No one in the group trusted him enough to leave both the tusks and the car keys in his hands.
Without the car, Scarface didn’t need to worry about Adit running off with the tusks. Those things weighed dozens of kilograms; even if Adit tried to flee on foot, he wouldn’t make it far before being caught and skinned alive.
Sure enough, as Adit predicted, the herd bypassed the two pickup trucks after approaching them.
“Hehe, a bunch of fools!”
For reasons unknown, Adit burst into laughter inside the car.
There’s a Chinese saying: “Extreme joy invites sorrow.” Of course, Adit had never heard it.
Just as most of the herd had passed by, one of the male elephants suddenly stopped, its long trunk probing toward the back of the truck.
With just a nudge, the two blood-stained tusks hidden under the tent were exposed.
Silent communication rippled through the herd. Elephants from the rear moved forward, while those who had already passed turned back.
By the time Adit realized the atmosphere had shifted, the herd had surrounded the pickup truck.
“Oh… f**k…”
Frantically grabbing a homemade shotgun from the backseat, Adit barely had time to aim before the enraged herd flipped the truck upside down.
BANG!
In the chaos, the shotgun discharged, shattering the windshield. Glass shards flew into Adit’s face, and the gun fell beside him. He collapsed into the cargo bed in an awkward, shrimp-like position.
“Oh f**k, I’m dead!”
The rain masked the elephants’ fury, save for the sound of the gunshot.
Meanwhile, the poachers in the woods grew confused, feeling trapped between advancing and retreating.
“Could that be Adit? Should we go back?” Tuka rushed over to ask.
“That kid’s useless! Can’t even guard the damn truck!” The freckled man spat angrily, his face pale from blood loss.
Gu Lang’s slippery escape was something Scarface hadn’t anticipated. Once Gu Lang started deliberately erasing his tracks, the poachers found it harder to pinpoint his route.
After a moment’s thought, Scarface turned to the group. “Tuka and I will continue the pursuit. You two head back… and tend to your wounds.”
Out of Tuka’s sight, Scarface exchanged a meaningful glance with the two white men. The implication was clear: if Adit did something stupid, these two were going to finish him off.
But while the four were discussing, none of them noticed—a Teddy-sized honey badger stood upright on a tree branch above them, clutching a leaf-wrapped bundle in his paws, panting heavily.
“Damn… I’m exhausted…”
Wang Ping gasped for air, feeling like he’d just run a 10-kilometer extreme cross-country race with a 30-kilogram load. He’d been sprinting flat-out, carefully watching his footing to avoid slipping. If he fell, he’d rather die than let the hive be disturbed.
After such a run, Wang Ping felt the energy he’d just replenished completely drained.
Fortunately, he’d made it in time. Seeing the four men below, Wang Ping felt a surge of excitement. With even the sniper present, this was a golden opportunity.
Without hesitation, Wang Ping lifted the hive, roughly aimed, and flung it with both paws. The hive arced through the air, hurtling toward the four men below.
Scarface had just finished giving instructions when he caught a green blur flying toward them out of the corner of his eye.
“F**k!”
Quickly drawing his pistol, he fired two shots at the object above.
The motion was smooth, fluid. From drawing the gun to aiming and firing, it was a single seamless action. Even Tuka, who prided himself on his marksmanship, couldn’t help but admire how cool it looked.
BANG! BANG!
The deafening gunshots reverberated through the forest. Before anyone could react, the hive shattered, splattering sticky liquid all over the four men.
And with it came the swarm of bees erupting from the broken hive.
Buzzzzz…
From his perch on the tree, Wang Ping watched as a black cloud erupted from the scattered fragments of the hive, instantly enveloping the four men.
“Hehe, all that effort was worth it. So satisfying!”
Standing on the branch, Wang Ping placed his tiny arms on his hips, threw his head back, and laughed maniacally.
