Chapter 46: Roach Warren

Sure enough, the system's voice rang out once again in his mind: "Unknown DNA sequence detected. Initiating diagnostic program..."

"Diagnostic complete. Zerg compatibility confirmed."

"Reconfiguring genetic structure. Gene Level D. Research tree unlocked. Technology Level 1. Building unlocked: 'Roach Warren.'"

"Life energy collected. Total: 4070. Rare elements collected: 1110."

It was Roach Warren! Finally, the backbone of the Zerg ground forces—the mid-range Roach units—had arrived. With Zealots leading the charge upfront, Roaches holding the center, and human bio-units covering the flanks, this combination of ground troops was enough to make Tang Fang's heart race with excitement.

He didn’t need many—just 20 Roaches, 20 Zealots, and 20 Marines. If he were to encounter another ambush from the Sulru Empire’s forces, he was confident he could wipe out three entire companies in one fell swoop.

And then there were the resources: 4070 minerals and 1110 gas. Tang Fang couldn’t stop grinning as he counted on his fingers. There were 74 Bat Demon corpses littering the ground. Doing the math, each Bat Demon was worth a staggering 55 minerals and 15 gas.

What a haul! This was an absolute fortune!

Just think about it—the two statues he had fought tooth and nail earlier, losing countless units, only to earn 1000 minerals and 1000 gas. But these Bat Demons? They practically handed over 4070 minerals and 1110 gas without him breaking a sweat. Was there any monster more cost-effective than this?

Scorpion Sharks? Mutated Rock Bugs? Or even the Centipede Beasts lurking beneath Planet 5? Forget it—all of them paled in comparison to the sheer numbers and value of the Bat Demons.

Now, the system’s balance showed: 4070 minerals, 2450 gas.

Things were finally looking up! He now had a substantial stash of resources. Converted into Marines, that was equivalent to 80 soldiers; converted into Zerglings, it was a whopping 160. Just in terms of numbers alone, this was comparable to a full company. And with the added advantage of advanced technology for these units, Tang Fang was confident he could take down an entire infantry battalion of the Sulru Empire.

Tang Fang chalked this windfall up to sheer luck. But if he thought about it carefully, it wasn’t just luck. Without the Zealots’ formidable offense and defense upfront, the long-range firepower of the Marauders, Queens, and Spine Crawler, and the narrow corridor terrain that funneled the enemy into a chokepoint, how could he have possibly held off the Bat Demons so easily?

For instance, if the battlefield had been inside the large structure beyond the rune gate, where the Bat Demons could freely climb and fly, their acid bombardments from above would have overwhelmed him completely.

But now, with this newfound wealth, what should he spend it on? More Zealots? Or maybe some Roaches to play around with? Tang Fang felt like an overnight millionaire, flush with cash and unsure how to spend it wisely.

Of the original horde, 74 Bat Demons had fallen, leaving fewer than 40 still alive. Perhaps the overwhelming killing intent radiating from the Zealots had struck fear into their hearts. After a brief burst of chaos, the remaining Bat Demons began retreating.

Zealots were tough and powerful, excellent at leading charges, but when it came to pursuit, they fell short. The Bat Demons, with their wing-assisted mobility, were incredibly agile. Without the "Charge" ability, the Zealots only had their two legs to rely on. Even at full sprint, they could barely keep pace with the Bat Demons. In such a situation, intercepting the fleeing creatures was simply out of the question.

Tang Fang noticed the scene unfolding before him. Thirty-eight Bat Demons remained, equivalent to 2090 minerals and 570 gas. Letting them escape like this? He couldn’t stomach it.

But how could he stop them? The Bat Demons could climb walls, fly, and move quickly on the ground. What could he do to intercept them?

Research the Zealots' "Charge" ability? That might catch the ones on the ground, but what about those on the ceiling? Spawn more Zerglings for their speed? Useless against the 31 Bat Demons clinging to the ceiling!

Ranged units could pose a threat, but the mobility of the Queens and Spine Crawler...

As Tang Fang’s gaze swept over Marauders and Marines, a sly smile crept across his face.

Then the lights on the Terran Barracks’ attached Tech Lab flickered to life. Two new upgrades—"Stimpack" (also known as Combat Stimulants) and "Concussive Shells"—were queued for research.

"Stimpack" would cost 1000 minerals and 1000 gas. "Concussive Shells" required 500 minerals and 500 gas.

Watching his balance plummet from 4070 minerals and 2450 gas to 2570 minerals and 950 gas, Tang Fang felt a sharp sting. But then he reminded himself: you can’t catch wolves without risking the bait, and you can’t win a beauty without spending money. Who knew if there were more Bat Demons lurking in that massive structure? Whether for immediate gains or long-term power, these expenses were worth it.

With a few clicks, he queued up four Marauders and five Marines for production while ordering an SCV to construct a Supply Depot. His balance continued to drop, finally settling at 1820 minerals and 850 gas.

The entire production and construction process took mere seconds. Before Tang Fang could fully lament his dwindling funds, the newly produced four Marauders and five Marines appeared before him, causing him to chuckle darkly.

At the same time, both "Stimpack" and "Concussive Shells" completed their research.

Tang Fang’s confidence in pursuing the Bat Demons stemmed from the system’s unparalleled production speed. Unlike in games, where unit production and skill research could take dozens—or even hundreds—of seconds, here, everything materialized almost instantly after pressing the command key. During idle moments, Tang Fang had pondered this phenomenon more than once. Eventually, he reached two self-soothing conclusions.

In scientific terms: the system existed in a different spacetime dimension from the real universe. Different dimensions meant different rates of time flow.

In fantastical terms: if he could bring a gaming system through a dimensional rift, why not cheat codes too? Remember the infamous "Operation CWAL" exploit in StarCraft 1? Not only did he bring the game system with him, but he also brought cheat codes.

"Heh, damn bastards, don’t run! Have the guts to stick around?"

Housen’s shout snapped Tang Fang out of his thoughts. Looking up, he saw that the eight Bat Demons still on the ground had taken to the ceiling, following the main group as they retreated hastily back the way they came.

When the freshly produced four Marauders and five Marines emerged into the corridor, Tang Fang’s lips curled into a cold smirk. With a single command, a Terran bio-force consisting of five Marauders and six Marines injected themselves with Stimpacks, raised their weapons, and charged forward.

As one heavily armored Marauder—a hulking figure resembling a bear—blazed past Housen with the speed of a lion, the thirty-year-old veteran’s jaw dropped, nearly biting his tongue in half. "Oh shit! Are these guys on steroids or what? They’re moving like rabid animals!"

Tang Fang nodded. "Yeah, pretty much."
