Chapter 10: Dark Demon Scoffs at the Trap
"Is there a map of the library?" Dark took out a sorting card and infused it with magic energy.
The sorting card, sensing his intention, displayed a map of the library on its surface.
The Saint Marian Academy library only had one floor, but every bookshelf was terrifyingly tall.
The academy used a physical separation method, placing the more profound books on the higher shelves.
Without the ability to fly, it was impossible to reach those deep, advanced books.
But Dark's familiar spirit had wings—that was his advantage!
Although familiar spirits were meant to replace "owls," most students’ familiar spirits didn’t have wings and couldn’t fly, which was quite embarrassing.
Dark found the section marked [Familiar Spirit] on the library map and headed there immediately.
The main difference between familiar spirits and ordinary magical spirits was that familiar spirits could exist outside the magic card for long periods without draining their master’s magic energy.
Magical spirits, on the other hand, had a time limit. No matter how powerful they were, their existence was finite. Once they exceeded that limit, they would start consuming their own magic energy, and when it reached zero, they would disappear.
Moreover, magical spirits had an intelligence level of 2, half a level lower than familiar spirits, placing them on par with inferior golems.
Despite having the map, the library was so vast that it still took Dark nearly ten minutes to find the bookshelf labeled [Familiar Spirit].
The entire shelf was filled with information related to familiar spirits!
"Do I have to search for it myself from here?" Dark couldn’t help but look up.
The bookshelf towered so high it seemed endless.
He was tempted to describe it as "reaching the clouds."
Who knew how many books were stored on this one shelf!
"How am I supposed to find anything in this? Should I go back and ask the librarian?"
"Damn it, even doing an assignment has the risk of increasing the indicator value."
Dark wasn’t about to let that happen!
So, he settled his mind and prepared to search from the bottom up, slowly.
Since DemiDevimon was demon-type, all he needed to do was find books related to demon-types.
But he quickly discovered that the books on this shelf were all titles like "Special Magical Spirits—Familiar Spirits", "The Story of Familiar Spirits and Elves", "Beginner’s Guide to Making Familiar Spirits", and "101 Key Points to Learn When Creating Familiar Spirits."
"Could it be I’m looking in the wrong place?"
Dark realized he might have fallen into a mental trap.
Information about DemiDevimon shouldn’t be in the [Familiar Spirit] section. He should be looking in the magic card or magical spirit section instead!
Ideally, he needed to find something like a Magical Spirits Compendium with a comprehensive index.
Once this clicked, Dark decisively opened the sorting card again and searched for the magical spirit section.
The result: rows upon rows of bookshelves, each labeled [Magical Spirit], stretching on for what seemed like an eternity!
"Great. Now not only is the top out of sight, but so is the end."
Dark sighed and began the long search.
...
After half an hour of searching, Dark finally found a book wedged in a corner, titled Into the Abyss.
Just when he had nearly lost hope, his spirits revived as he eagerly pulled out the two-finger-thick book and quickly flipped through it.
It had a table of contents!
From page two onward, the index listed information on over a thousand demons!
Instead of taking the book to the reading room, Dark stood right by the bookshelf and began browsing.
Returning to the first page, a short line of text caught his eye.
[Go into the abyss, stare into the abyss.]
Dark intended to skip it, but suddenly his vision blurred, and the words began to shake, morphing into a different language—one he’d never seen but somehow understood.
"This… is it Secret Ancient Script?"
Secret Ancient Script was an encrypted magical language used by ancient demons to pass down knowledge.
This kind of magical script was extremely unique, with encryption levels ranging from 1 to 12. Only those with the corresponding sequence of demon bloodlines were able to decipher it.
It was a unique encryption method in this world!
Dark had no idea where his current bloodline ranked in the sequence, nor the encryption level of this script.
But it didn’t stop him from understanding the message.
[Disperse the fog, see the truth, the full moon will guide you.]
...
Dark blinked, then chuckled softly and flipped directly to the index page.
He found the entry for [DemiDevimon] in the demon-type compendium, sorted alphabetically.
Since this was just the first homework assignment for a first-year class, Dark suspected Professor Silver simply wanted them to learn how to use the library to find resources.
The compendium clearly listed detailed information on DemiDevimon, and all he had to do was copy it to complete his homework.
He took out his paper and pen and quickly began taking notes.
DemiDevimon was a demon-type, with a shadow attribute, ranked in the [Twelfth Sequence: Familiar Spirit]—the lowest rank among demons.
The compendium described it as trash among demons, a vile little imp with no power but an affinity for schemes and trickery. It excelled at flattering higher-ranked demons and survived in the demon world by sucking up to them.
It was of a little value.
As a magical spirit, DemiDevimon was rated one star, with 100 points of magic energy and 100 in both attack and defense. Its ultimate move, Demi Dart, involved launching a giant syringe to drain an opponent’s blood, costing 50 points of magic energy.
As a familiar spirit, DemiDevimon's attack and defense were both fixed at 100, with 100 points of magic energy. It had no ultimate move, but its flight speed was enhanced, and it had the familiar spirit’s exclusive skill, [Tracking].
Basically, most familiar spirits had similar stats and were skilled at delivering messages, replacing owls or cuckoo birds.
After quickly finishing his notes, Dark casually returned Into the Abyss to the shelf.
Then, he grabbed a nearby book, A Collection of Magical Spirits, and headed to the reading room.
Since there was no homework for Magic Theory or Potions class, Dark had the rest of the afternoon free.
New students often spent their free time exploring the academy or playing games in the common room.
Some preferred to have fun first and rush to finish homework later.
Dark wasn’t interested in wandering the castle or socializing, so the library was the best place for him.
He poured himself a cup of custom tea, balanced in fragrance, and sat at a corner table. Then, he opened A Collection of Magical Spirits and flipped through it as if reading a casual magazine.
Dark felt that this laid-back lifestyle suited him best.
In the vast Saint Marian Academy, there was only this tiny corner that gave him peace of mind.
It was perfect.
His Deadly Sin indicators not only didn’t increase, but he even reduced a point of [Wrath] and a point of [Sloth].

ReplyDeleteThank you for the chapter!
Shouldn't index be bar; sequence be rank and data be stat? It doesn't make sense otherwise.
