Chapter 133: On the Brink
In the span of a single breath, Brandon and Veronica exchanged ten blows.
To the onlookers, it appeared as though the young lord from Eruin was at a clear disadvantage. Yet, everyone—centaurs included—watched in stunned silence. They could see how formidable Veronica truly was; even the peace barrier flickered under the strain of her power. When she unleashed her full strength, the barrier retaliated, but the thorny vines that had effortlessly bound Faina earlier were reduced to ash by her sword energy before they could come within ten feet of her.
Veronica hadn’t even aimed directly at the vines—they simply couldn’t approach her. Despite this overwhelming display, Brandon continued to hold his ground, matching her strike for strike.
Veronica herself began to feel a growing sense of frustration. The Cruzean delegation’s visit to the Black Forest under the guise of diplomatic relations was, in truth, a reconnaissance mission. Wizards had identified the massive magical reaction months prior as linked to a divine artifact—likely the Lionheart Sword, lost to Eruin centuries ago. Astrologers confirmed its significance. For the empire, retrieving the sword was paramount, yet here they were, embroiled in an unnecessary conflict due to her miscalculation.
If only she had subdued the boy immediately with her oppressive aura, none of this would have happened. But now, Brandon’s swordsmanship and resolve had reached their peak. Even unleashing her full might wouldn’t suppress him—it would only provoke a fierce counterattack.
Veronica couldn’t help but marvel inwardly. When had Eruin produced such a prodigy? At his age, she doubted she could have endured so long against her current self. For a fleeting moment, she considered lowering her blade and extending an invitation—to take him back to Cruze, to mentor him personally. His ability to anticipate her attacks after their first encounter was extraordinary, a talent rarely seen in history.
But pride and circumstance left her no room to maneuver. This battle needed resolution—and quickly.
She steeled herself, ready to unleash her true strength despite the potential destruction. If half the market was obliterated, so be it. What could the druids do? At worst, they’d expel them from the city. She, commander of the Azure Sky Legion, refused to be cowed by trivial concerns.
Her resolve hardened, and a surge of azure light enveloped her blade.
"Be careful," Otaris warned sharply.
Brandon felt the immense pressure building. He knew that if he could just evade this strike, Veronica would lose her chance to press further—but how could he possibly dodge?
Glancing back, he saw Antietta and Cinnabar still holding Funiya nearby.
"This madwoman..."
Anger flared within Brandon.
"In the name of the wind, holy sword—" With a wave of his hand, twin cerulean wings unfurled behind him. Pointing The Sword of the Earth forward, the wings parted to reveal hundreds of gleaming swords hovering midair, all aimed at Veronica and her entourage.
Veronica hesitated, caught off guard by the spectacle. Everyone present froze, witnessing Brandon’s radiant display of power.
"You can try," Brandon said calmly, meeting her gaze.
"You dare threaten an imperial legion commander?" Veronica’s emerald brows furrowed. "Do you think these trinkets can harm me?"
"Not necessarily you," Brandon replied nonchalantly. "But over two hundred strikes, each surpassing silver-rank force, delivered simultaneously. My lady commander, are you confident you can protect everyone here from such an onslaught?"
Veronica’s brow tightened. Rono, a gifted alchemist and knight, had been summoned multiple times by the emperor himself. And Faina’s lineage made her invaluable. Any harm to them would be unacceptable.
For a moment, Veronica stood immobilized, realizing she’d been outmaneuvered.
"Threatening a lady’s life is despicable," Faina spat, glaring daggers at Brandon. If looks could kill, he’d already be riddled with holes.
"Outnumbering the weak and oppressing the small doesn’t sound very honorable either," Antietta shot back, unyielding in the face of nobility.
Lifting her chin, she addressed Veronica: "Commander Veronica, is this how your empire earns its honor?" Antietta knew Veronica well—or rather, recognized the unmistakable Azure Sky.
Veronica scoffed, avoiding a direct answer. "Elementalist, alchemist, Sword Saint—and now summoning Heavenly Armament? Since when did Eruin produce such talents? Has the Wind Temple meddled, or perhaps even the Templars?"
She mocked, "I didn’t realize Eruin warranted so much attention."
Brandon nearly choked on indignation. This wasn’t Heavenly Armament—it was merely the synergy between his Wind Spirit Spider card and Holy Sword Summoning. Yet, upon reflection, the resemblance was undeniable. Heavenly Armament was a signature spell of the Templars, wielded exclusively by clerics or higher-ranking clergy. Given the Templars’ enmity with the Temple of Flames during the Second Holy War, any cleric hearing of Brandon’s abilities would surely summon him for questioning.
Though Brandon dared defy Eruin’s nobles, opposing the combined might of the Temple of Flames—a coalition of two empires and twelve nations—was unthinkable. Without the Temple’s tacit approval, Eruin wouldn’t exist today.
Explaining himself seemed impossible. Could he admit being a Planeswalker? Would anyone believe him if he claimed it was akin to a professional card player’s skill set?
Veronica’s next move would surely bury him alive.
Thus, Brandon prayed silently that she wouldn’t spread rumors of his abilities. Fortunately, Veronica wasn’t one to gossip recklessly, nor exploit others’ weaknesses publicly.
Rather than dwell on the matter, Veronica raised her sword once more, her tone imperious. "Young man, do you truly believe I won’t attack?"
Brandon stiffened, feeling the oppressive weight of her intent bear down on him.
"She’s decided to strike," Otaris warned.
"Crazy woman," Brandon muttered under his breath, frantically calculating escape routes.
Just then, a commanding voice echoed from above.
"Cruzeans, dare to attack and see what happens!"
The booming declaration reverberated through the air, shaking everyone to their core. The green barrier shimmered violently as druids materialized around them, forming a protective line in front of Brandon.
An eerie silence fell.
Veronica frowned, lowering her sword. Provoking the druids openly would violate their sacred rules—and injuring one accidentally could spark dire consequences, given her status.
Despite their reclusive nature, the druids’ wrath was legendary. Thousands of Black Forests dotted Vonder’s borders, each harboring druidic presence. Their numbers worldwide remained unknown, save perhaps to Marsha herself. Moreover, Erlanta, the forest kingdom, counted them as allies.
"Lady Veronica, your embassy swore not to cause trouble here. Remember, however mighty Cruze may be, it holds no sway over us," the lead druid stated coldly.
Brandon recognized the elder speaking as one of the seventeen-member council from earlier. The stern rebuke made it clear—the druids weren’t siding with the Cruzeans.
Their immediate reproach of Veronica signaled favor toward Brandon. It seemed his proposal intrigued them.
Veronica’s expression darkened.
She understood the implicit warning. Initially hoping to leverage her embassy status, she now realized the futility. These druids showed no leniency, sealing off any possibility of detaining Brandon.
Veronica scrutinized the druids thoughtfully. Were they merely indifferent, or did some connection exist between Brandon and them?
But what ties could an obscure Eruin noble possibly share with the druids?
