Chapter 132: Two Against One

"Insolent whelp," Kalenz sneered, his blade inching closer to Brandon's body.

Brandon, in turn, regarded him with a look of pity.

Though completely immobilized under Veronica’s overwhelming presence, Brandon’s retina flickered with layers of green grids. Panels displaying various attributes and data flashed rapidly before settling on the Planeswalker system.

Then, Brandon smiled faintly at Kalenz. The latter hesitated, unsure of the meaning behind the smile. But Veronica, the commander of the Azure Sky Legion, noticed something amiss first.

"Hmm? Kalenz, retreat!" she warned.

But it was too late. A blade of white-gold flame materialized before Brandon—the Blade of the White Sun. This was the first time Brandon had ever revealed this card, and the unfortunate Earl Kalenz became its inaugural target.

Kalenz never expected Brandon to counterattack while under Veronica’s suppression. As the flaming blade coalesced out of thin air, the nobleman could only widen his eyes in horror. Struck squarely, he screamed and was sent flying backward. After performing an astonishing series of mid-air rotations, he crashed heavily onto the floor.

"Lord Kalenz!" one of the blonde twin-tailed maidens gasped.

Veronica raised her emerald eyebrows in surprise. She hadn’t anticipated that Brandon could still act under her oppressive aura. Though irritated by his audacity, as the renowned Sword Saint and commander of the empire, she refrained from drawing her sword, Azure Sky. Humiliating a younger opponent would tarnish the empire's dignity.

Nonetheless, the empire’s authority could not be defied.

Raising her hand, she ordered coldly, "Seize him." With a wave, over thirty knights from the Royal Guard Cavalry surged forward.

As Veronica released her pressure on Brandon, she assumed these knights—though not the empire’s frontline forces—would suffice against a minor Eruinian noble. In her experience, aside from the Colcova Royal Knights, Eruin’s army was little more than a rabble.

But as the weight lifted, Brandon stepped back and drew his sword for the first time. The dark blade refracted a cold light, causing Faina, bound by thorns, to exclaim, "...That... that sword..."

"Be careful! He has Crimson Blessing," a black-haired youth’s voice cut through hers.

Rono staggered to his feet, wiping blood from his lips. His shock surpassed his physical pain as he recognized the silver gauntlet on Brandon’s right arm—Crimson Blessing, the true divine artifact coveted by alchemists.

Flames erupted along Brandon’s arm, engulfing The Sword of the Earth. He leveled the blade and charged at the knights like a demon emerging from hell, leaving a trail of fire in his wake.

Seeing Brandon’s swordplay, Veronica’s expression shifted. This wasn’t just any near-Sword Saint; the youth before her was a genuine Sword Saint. Recognizing his sword and armor, she realized her grave mistake—she had underestimated him.

Gripping Azure Sky, she prepared to intervene, but Brandon had already plunged into the fray, burning like an immortal phoenix wreathed in flames.

"Attack from the left front—" Otaris’s calm voice guided him.

"Exploit that knight’s opening."

"Don’t let him retreat."

"Pursue."

"Block this strike for maximum effect."

"Strange, young one, how do you foresee their moves?" Otaris marveled. Brandon seemed to anticipate enemy intentions better than she did, relying not just on instinct or experience.

Even Geert lacked such innate talent.

In Brandon’s eyes, golden lines traced complex patterns, revealing the knights’ strategies. Each movement they made extended a line toward his chest, exposing their intentions.

This analytical skill, though imperfect, suited him remarkably well, especially combined with centuries of gaming experience and Otaris’s guidance.

The Cruzean Royal Guard found themselves thwarted before even attacking. Frustrated, they realized Brandon seemed to know their every move. Sometimes, merely shifting their shoulders triggered his preemptive strikes, dismantling all possible attack routes.

It felt like being toyed with by a cat, leaving them desperate to flee.

Yet, Brandon always pulled back at the last moment, shocking the knights. They knew he could have defeated them easily but chose not to.

Was it mercy? It didn’t seem so.

While the knights puzzled over this, Veronica understood—Brandon had been anticipating her intervention from the start.

"How did he know?" she wondered.

"She’s about to strike," Otaris warned.

Curious, Brandon parried the knights’ attacks while asking, "Lady Otaris, in your prime, who would prevail between you and her?"

"Just a girl," Otaris scoffed confidently. "I wouldn’t even need to draw my sword. She’s not as strong as your grandfather."

"What?" Brandon exclaimed, startled.

"Focus! She moved!"

Sure enough, Veronica appeared before him. Brandon rolled to evade her strike.

Surprised by his agility, Veronica thought, He seems to know my moves before I make them.

Meanwhile, Brandon endured Otaris’s scolding.

"Why are you dodging? Meet her head-on!"

"Lady Otaris, I’m not afraid of her skill, but her power far surpasses mine."

"Fool! She can’t unleash her full strength here without destroying this market."

Realization dawned on Brandon. The druidic aerial bazaar’s protections could withstand only two gold-rank combatants. Any higher, and the barriers would crumble.

Distracted, he nearly took a slash to the face, narrowly avoiding it. Veronica’s sword grazed his cheek, leaving a shallow cut.

Feeling the cool sting, Brandon smirked. Veronica, amused yet impressed, thought, What audacity! Not even our famed Sword Saints dare to lose focus during a duel—and he still evaded it.

If only he were Cruzean, she mused. I’d take him under my wing and pass on my legacy.

Unaware of her thoughts, Brandon, bolstered by Otaris’s advice, decided to go on the offensive.

Halting momentarily, he raised The Sword of the Earth to meet Azure Sky. Gray and azure lights clashed—Azure Sky, a wind-element Phantasmal-grade weapon, matched The Sword of the Earth in rank. However, earth inherently countered the volatile nature of wind, suppressing its tornado effect.

The clash numbed Brandon’s arm. "She’s stronger than I thought," he mused. Yet, instead of retreating, he countered with a thrust.

Everyone gasped. The knights, unable to intervene, watched in disbelief as the youth retaliated.

"How dare he," Veronica growled. Not only was he unafraid, but he also sought to overpower her—a notion bordering on absurdity.
