Chapter 134: Buga
What ties could an obscure Eruin noble possibly share with the druids?
Veronica couldn’t fathom it. Shaking her head slightly, she replied coldly, "This is a matter between Cruze and Eruin. We hope you won’t interfere."
The atmosphere chilled at the words of the Azure Sky Legion commander.
"A private grudge?" The druid elder frowned and shook his head. "Regardless of your grievances or reasons, you are forbidden from harming him here."
He paused. "However, in deference to our ties with the King of Flames, we can overlook what has transpired thus far. But if the Cruze Empire believes it can act recklessly here, do not blame us for responding harshly."
"Respond harshly?" Veronica sneered. "And how do you propose to do so?" Her tone was icy. Even the three Great Druids of Green Tower together wouldn’t match her strength alone.
"Are you suggesting, Commander Veronica, that you wish to provoke a war?"
War. The black-haired youth’s brows twitched at the word. A conflict with the druids wasn’t something to be taken lightly—it could easily escalate into another Holy War.
Faina stared incredulously. "For an Eruinian, you’d risk war with Cruze?"
"No," the druids corrected. "You misunderstand. It is for our most esteemed guest."
Our most esteemed guest.
What kind of title was that? Besides Erlanta, the druids had never bestowed such an honorific upon outsiders. When had they grown so closely tied to the outside world?
All eyes turned awkwardly toward Brandon.
Even Veronica fell silent, realizing the druids might be serious. Reluctantly, she conceded, "Very well, then what of my people injured by this whelp?"
"Injured? How so?" The druid elder turned back to Brandon.
"Let their side explain." Brandon gestured toward Faina, trussed up in thorns, speaking magnanimously. Truthfully, he wasn’t being generous; the druids already understood the situation.
Within the peace barrier, whoever acted first would face immediate retaliation. Though some could ignore it, few possessed Veronica’s overwhelming power.
Veronica cursed inwardly, recognizing the young fox’s cunning. Still, she couldn’t help admiring his composure, wit, and remarkable talent. She glanced at Brandon, thinking how much better it would be if he were Cruzean—
"Faina, speak," she instructed the bound noblewoman softly.
There was no point hiding anything now. Veronica knew the full story but represented imperial dignity. To Brandon’s surprise, Faina didn’t embellish the tale for sympathy, instead recounting events honestly—albeit with biting remarks about the "Eruinian bumpkin," "impolite brute," and "man lacking refinement." Brandon’s forehead twitched with suppressed anger.
Once the druids understood the context, resolution came swiftly. The Cruzeans were clearly in the wrong, having gained no advantage in the ensuing fight. After compensating the centaur merchant for damages, the imperial knights carried the gravely injured Earl Kalenz away, heads bowed in humiliation.
It reminded everyone of the empire’s crushing defeat against the Hazael centuries ago, when Highland Legion knights slunk off the battlefield, their white plumes drooping lifelessly.
Indeed, since that ancient loss, the empire had never suffered such indignity beyond its borders—not even Veronica could salvage their pride here.
The knights shot venomous glares at the young Eruin lord. Everything was his fault—that accursed Eruinian.
Veronica fixed Brandon with a piercing look. "I’ll remember you, young man."
"It’s the Cruze Empire that remembers me," Brandon replied calmly, sheathing his sword.
"Are you nobility?" the commander asked.
Brandon nodded.
"A lord?"
"Frontier Knight." This woman, though formidable, was a true hero—and partly Freya’s mentor. Thus, Brandon answered earnestly.
Veronica fell silent.
"It seems," she said finally, "Eruin will birth a legend."
Brandon said nothing.
"Young man," Veronica softened her tone, "would you consider joining Cruze as one of our knights? I can offer you everything you desire—"
Brandon smiled faintly. For a legendary figure to admire him so openly—"Thank you," he replied, "but I am Eruinian."
Veronica studied him once more, then nodded. Turning, she patted the shoulder of the noble girl just freed from the thorns. "Let’s go."
"W-Wait!" The girl’s delicate brows shot up, her twin-tailed blonde hair whipping as she pointed accusingly at Brandon. "The Stone Key—just give it to that rude brute?"
Veronica glared at her. "Do you want to embarrass yourself further?"
"B-But…" The girl flinched, lowering her voice to a mutter. "That key is essential for my advancement exam…"
"Come along. I’ll have a word with your grandmother about your upbringing when we return." Veronica sighed, shaking her head as she walked ahead.
"Ah—!" The girl paled, lifting her skirts to chase after Veronica, pleading, "Commander, this isn’t my fault—it’s all because of that rude brute, isn’t it…?"
Behind them, Brandon watched them leave, dismissing his Holy Sword Summoning. Antietta and Cinnabar approached.
"Lord Brandon," Antietta sighed, "you’ve offended the Cruze Empire again."
"It was worth it," Brandon replied, opening his palm to reveal the Stone Key.
"Worth it? Do you even know who that woman is?"
"Veronica. Yes, I know her."
"And yet you dared to fight her!" Antietta snapped, suddenly exasperated. "When will you stop doing things that make us worry?"
Brandon hesitated, turning to face the noblewoman. Antietta’s worried expression softened his heart.
"I’m sorry," he said sincerely.
"Please don’t always apologize," she retorted, exasperated.
"Sorry."
This time, Brandon chuckled.
The departure of the Cruzeans brought relief. At least no one remained to contest the Stone Key. If Faina had insisted on staying, Brandon would’ve faced a dilemma. While the key was crucial, he wasn’t eager to expend unnecessary resources. Unlike the wealthy empire, Tonygel was still impoverished.
In the absence of competition, Brandon secured the key for two Flame Agates. The centaur merchant considered himself lucky, crediting the Cruzeans for his fortune. Meanwhile, Brandon felt he’d struck a bargain—if not for offending the empire.
Thus, the outcome was satisfactory for all—except the Cruzeans.
Unbeknownst to anyone, from the moment the conflict in Green Tower’s market broke out to the moment it ended inconclusively, two pairs of silver-pupiled eyes had been watching everything from nearby.
…
The Silver Sparrow Tavern nestled quietly between two ancient trees—Odlar (“Elder” in Elvish) and Tassar (“Evergreen”). Its nest-like structure appeared eccentric from the outside, yet within, it radiated warmth and calm. Suspended in the air like the famed Centaur’s Hoof Market, the tavern bore a distinct charm of its own—a graceful blend of elven artistry and quiet mystery, the mark of its tree-elf proprietor.
From the west-facing seats, one could glimpse the bustle of the Centaur’s Hoof through round windows veined with silver. There sat the Silver Leader, one of the twelve Archmages of the Buga Wizards—known as the Recorder of All Magic. Clad in flowing silver robes, his snow-white beard nearly brushed the floor as he turned his gaze away from the window.
“That girl seemed to be from the Cruze Empire,” said the elder clad in silver robes.
“Veronica, commander of the Azure Sky Legion,” the other elder replied.
“The Lionheart Sword is their legacy. No wonder they sent envoys in such haste. Still, Geert’s bloodline weakens with every generation.”
“And you, William?”
“Eck was my friend before his death,” William said softly. “His sword has reappeared—I came to see the one it chose.”
The other elder smiled faintly. “They say Buga’s wizards are cold and detached, but perhaps that isn’t entirely true.”
“I wish it were,” William murmured. “Beyond time and knowledge, I seek nothing. Yet none can escape the bounds of flesh—not even the silver race.”
“What of Madara’s undead?”
“Those skeletons won’t cause much trouble, though something strange has been stirring of late.”
“Oh?”
“The Silver Candle Society's surveillance of the dark frontier has ceased. Something moves in that shadowed realm. The astrologers whisper of a rising power in the east—perhaps this is its beginning.”
“A new empire?”
“Perhaps more than one.” William said, then changed the topic. “That youth—isn’t he Eruinian?”
“Yes… I feel as though I’ve seen him before.”
“Oh?”
“I noticed a magical mark upon him—one he himself doesn’t recognize. Its essence feels… familiar.”
“Interesting. Whose?”
The elder’s lips curved into a knowing smirk. “It seems to belong to a certain unruly girl…”
