Chapter 426: Dark Demon’s Mysterious Journey

"2000 defense points? Is it really that tough?" Dark skeptically poked the surface of the [Greedy Slime II].

But the exterior of the [Greedy Slime II] was nothing but soft; a simple poke would cause a finger to sink effortlessly into its gelatinous surface, so much so that an entire arm could disappear into its pliant mass with ease.

And honestly, the cool, refreshing sensation of poking it was surprisingly pleasant.

Being enveloped by the [Greedy Slime II] felt like entering a botanical garden, with the fragrant aroma of fresh grass wafting around.

Before he realized it, the impurities clogging his pores had been completely absorbed, leaving him feeling renewed—refreshed and invigorated, both physically and mentally.

In short, it was a deeply revitalizing experience.

Dark soon stopped testing the hardness of the [Greedy Slime II] and instead continued to review its ultimate abilities.

The [Greedy Slime II] was merely an orange card, but it possessed three ultimate abilities.

Among these three, Dark could recognize the effects of the latter two.

The first one was [Divided We Stand], an ability that was clearly related to creating clones. However, its specific effects still needed further examination.

▼
[Divided We Stand]: [Greedy Slime II] can self-divide. For every 200 points of magic energy consumed, it can split into one [Trash Slime]. For every 400 points of magic energy consumed, it can split into one [Greedy Slime I].

The base stats of a [Trash Slime] were 100 magic energy, 0 attack, and 0 defense.

The base stats of a [Greedy Slime I] were 200 magic energy, 0 attack, and 0 defense.

In other words, the [Greedy Slime II] needed to consume twice the amount of magic energy to split into either a [Trash Slime] or a [Greedy Slime I].

Moreover, based on this description, the slimes it produced seemed to be independent entities and could be used as tributes without needing a special magic card like [Great Liberation].

If this were true, it meant that a single [Greedy Slime II] could create up to 15 stars’ worth of sacrificial offerings.

Dark had seen plenty of dueling tournaments and had long been envious of the techniques used by his seniors to generate offerings. Now, having a similar method of his own was something that filled him with joy.

But instead of testing it immediately, he shifted his attention to the next ultimate ability: [Photosynthesis].

"Photosynthesis" is a biological term that usually refers to the process by which green plants absorb sunlight, converting carbon dioxide and water into energy-rich organic compounds while releasing oxygen.

However, the [Photosynthesis] ability of [Greedy Slime II] seemed to share a similar effect with Pokémon’s move of the same name.

▼
[Photosynthesis]: Recovers 1/2 of its maximum magic energy. If used under sunny or bright daylight conditions, it can recover up to 2/3 of its maximum magic energy in one go, and gains a sustained magic energy regeneration ability of 4 points per second. In sandstorms, hail, rain, heavy rain, or foggy weather, it can only recover 1/4 of its maximum HP. It cannot be used at night.

"This effect... It’s quite similar to Umbreon’s [Moonlight], except Umbreon thrives at night, while [Greedy Slime II] works best during the day."

"If I use this ultimate to recover magic energy, wouldn’t that allow [Greedy Slime II] to generate even more offerings?"

Thinking this through, Dark couldn’t help but feel surprised.

After all, [Trash Slime] had originally been considered a failed experiment, but with the right deadly sin card as support, it had become incredibly powerful.

And there was still one final ultimate ability: [Inherent Greed].

Judging by its name, [Inherent Greed] clearly represented the concept of greed and was likely to be quite potent.

▼
[Inherent Greed]: Born from an intrinsic desire for more, Greedy Slime is driven by endless greed. No matter the treasure, it always seeks more. And it always finds what it desires.

"This description... Could it be another treasure-hunting skill?"

"Give it an item, and it’ll help you find more of the same type?"

Dark’s mind raced as he began to get a basic understanding of [Inherent Greed].

Unlike the other treasure-hunting skill [Treasure Scent], [Inherent Greed] seemed to be a more targeted ultimate ability for finding specific items. The prerequisite, however, was to have a sample of the desired item, something that could spark the greed of [Greedy Slime II].

If this ultimate could be used correctly, it would prove to be extremely useful.

...

When [Greedy Slime II] eventually reverted back to a [Trash Slime], Dark finished tidying up his notebook and other items.

He said goodnight to his magical spirits and gently returned the sleeping Vampire Fraulein back into her magic card. He then slid under his blankets, reflecting on the day’s experiences as he drifted off to sleep.

The next day, he woke up to find the sun already high in the sky.

[Sloth] had increased slightly, but nothing serious.

Dark spent some time handling daily tasks before turning his attention to preparations for the secret passage expedition.

According to his plan, he would spend a night in the secret passage, returning by Sunday afternoon or evening. Therefore, he needed to prepare plenty of supplies.

Aside from essential food and water, he also packed camping gear.

Additionally, he brought along the [Bottle of Thoughts] and the [Magic Brain Dropper], making sure he was fully prepared for the journey.

All of this was in pursuit of finding the Statue of Moon Goddess.

But how was Dark so certain that another Statue of Moon Goddess existed in the secret passage?

It was because his [Flower Card] was still able to absorb [Lust].

The reason the [Flower Card] could absorb [Lust] was due to the presence of the Statue of Moon Goddess. Under normal circumstances, after the previous Statue of Moon Goddess disappeared, this special function of the [Flower Card] should have ceased as well.

However, that wasn’t the case—his [Flower Card] was still functioning perfectly.

From this, Dark deduced the existence of another Statue of Moon Goddess.

However, Saint Marian’s castle was filled with mysterious secret passages, even the professors couldn’t fully explore them. Finding a hidden statue of the Moon Goddess in some unknown corner was a monumental challenge.

Though Dark had asked Professor Cazer to modify a [Flower Card] to assist in the search, if the statue of Moon Goddess’s aura was completely hidden, it would be impossible to track it down with just the card alone.

Thus, Dark had never expected the search to be easy.

This expedition was as much a way to spice up his academy life as it was a serious hunt.

It was also an opportunity for him and his magical spirits to embark on a spontaneous adventure.

...

At 1:00 PM, Dark arrived at the familiar entrance to the secret passage, brimming with excitement. The entrance had been resealed, but with his access card in hand, he faced no obstacles. He simply pressed the card against the wall, which melted away like water, revealing an oval-shaped opening just big enough for two people.

Peeking inside, Dark took a step forward. DemiDevimon, who had been ready to lead the group, paused in confusion before quickly flapping its wings and following him.

Not long after entering the passage, Dark stopped and summoned [Magical Scribe]. He then had [Magical Scribe] call forth [Leomon]. Meanwhile, he activated his access card, bringing up the [map] stored within it.

Professor Cazer had taken his suggestion and developed a simple map system. This [map] recorded the path taken since entering the passage, gradually drawing a temporary map. The secret passage constantly shifted, and the maps currently being sold on Traveller Street were long outdated. Only a map created in real-time could ensure accuracy, allowing a swift return from deep within the secret passage.

In short, it was more convenient.

About ten minutes later, [Leomon] appeared as summoned by [Magical Scribe]. Dark tossed his backpack to it and continued walking through the passage.

Without the interference of the ritual from that night, the passage returned to its usual state. The scenery along the way was monotonous and repetitive, but Dark was in no hurry. After walking for about an hour, he chose a spot to rest, taking out [Lust  III: Moon] from his card pouch.

Aside from the [Flower Card] featuring the white datura, this card—crafted from the Moon Goddess's [Lust]—was his most significant item related to the Moon Goddess’s statue.

In theory, as long as he held this magic card and continued searching, there was a chance the passage would respond to his wish, and the Temple of the Moon Goddess might reappear before him.

This belief was the foundation of his decision to explore the passage and form his twice-a-month exploration plan. But now, he had a new treasure-hunting tool.

"In the name of Dark Demon, come forth—Trash Slime."

...

After summoning [Trash Slime], Dark teased it with [Lust  III: Moon], then used another card, [Greed III], to evolve it into [Greedy Slime II].

"I don't think I need to explain how precious this deadly sin card is, right?" Dark chuckled as he looked at the enormous slime that appeared by his side.

"Boing." [Greedy Slime II] nodded vigorously.

Dark placed [Lust III: Moon] atop its head. In the next moment, [Greedy Slime II]'s head indented, absorbing the deadly sin card into its body, where it floated in the center.

[Greedy Slime II] relished the aura of [Lust III: Moon], exerting all its energy to unleash its ultimate [Inherent Greed] ability, searching for something with a similar aura. But after scanning for a long time, its gaze eventually fell on Dark’s card pouch.

"That's not going to work," Dark said, patting the card pouch with a wry smile.

This result was roughly what he had expected. When the statue of the Moon Goddess wasn't within [Greedy Slime II]'s range of detection, the closest thing to the aura of [Lust III: Moon] would naturally be the [Lust III] card in his possession, along with the magical spirits formed by [Lust].

"Boing~" [Greedy Slime II] pressed its jelly-like body gently against him, nudging carefully. Dark, however, turned and buried his face into it, shaking his head wildly before finally lifting his head, feeling refreshed and ready to continue his exploration.

Fifteen minutes later, [Greedy Slime II] devolved back into [Trash Slime]. Dark didn't return it to the magic card but instead placed it on his shoulder, letting it accompany him. [Trash Slime], rarely receiving such a treatment since its creation, began happily blowing little bubbles. Feeling it was becoming increasingly useful, it was excited.

After about another hour of travel, [Greed III]'s cooldown ended, so Dark evolved [Trash Slime] back into [Greedy Slime II], allowing it to continue utilizing its ability to explore.

If the search yielded no results, they moved forward, repeating this process until evening.

Dark eventually found a more spacious area, set up [Wonderland], and began summoning his magical spirits one by one. With the help of [Magical Scribe], he quickly summoned all of them. Afterward, they built a campfire in the passage and celebrated the weekend together.

Amid the cheerful songs of [Wonderland], the magical spirits, who seldom ventured outside, began dancing around the crackling fire. Watching their joyful faces, Dark's gaze softened.

That night, he unrolled his sleeping bag inside [Wonderland]'s [Haunted House], completely unconcerned, and fell asleep.

...

The night passed without incident.

The next morning, Dark poked his head out of the sleeping bag and opened his eyes to find several magical spirits curled up beside him like cats. The adorable Misdreavus floated above, swaying like a will-o'-the-wisp.

It was clear Misdreavus hadn't slept the entire night. As a nocturnal creature, it had taken on the role of night watchman.

After breakfast, Dark packed up [Wonderland], returned the magical spirits to their magic cards, leaving only DemiDevimon, Leomon, and Trash Slime with him, and resumed his exploration.

By 3:00 PM, when [Greedy Slime II] once again failed to detect anything, Dark knew this week's exploration would end in failure. He chose not to linger in the passage any longer and instead climbed onto Leomon's shoulder to quickly retrace his steps back to the entrance.

With the map created by his access card, he managed to find the exit before nightfall and returned to the castle. Although he came back empty-handed, he knew that every exploration would contribute to his knowledge and experience, ultimately bearing fruit in the future.

Meanwhile, deep within the passage, unknown to Dark, his journey had caused subtle shifts in the unseen depths.

Upon returning to his dorm, Dark felt inspired. He set up his easel and painted a "Campfire Family Portrait." Perhaps, after all, this trip wasn't entirely fruitless.

...

For the next few days leading up to Tuesday night, Dark chose [Pride] whenever extracting deadly sins from himself. In fact, [Pride] was the only option left to him.

The significant surge in [Greed] during the Duel Festival had already reached its limit after his recent draws, and [Lust] had similarly dropped below 95 points. Only [Pride], which had grown slightly after his tournament victory, still had enough for him to draw from.

Over four nights, he accumulated a total of 6 points of [Pride].

Wednesday soon arrived.

With a sense of anticipation, Dark closed his eyes under the covers.

"Goodnight."
