Chapter 427: Dark Demon's Fusion Experiment

Wednesday afternoons were always the time students quite looked forward to. It was a chance to step away from their hectic academic schedules and enjoy a relaxing afternoon—at least, that's what students often thought leading up to Wednesday.

However, when Wednesday afternoon actually arrived, many students would suddenly realize they had a mountain of assignments to finish. This meant they often found themselves dashing back and forth between the library aisles, groaning in frustration.

Of course, students like Dark, who never left their work unfinished until the next day, didn’t have such worries.

Still, after his lunch break, Dark headed to the library.

Senior Pandora and Ms. Bella were chatting quietly behind the counter.

The moment Dark appeared at the library entrance, Pandora noticed him. She said something to Ms. Bella, grabbed her backpack, and came out from behind the counter.

"Why did you come to the library? Didn't we say the usual spot?" Pandora asked with a smile.

Dark smiled back. "It’s more convenient here. Which lab?"

Pandora twirled a set of keys she had taken out of her pocket and replied, "The usual spot."

The "usual spot" was, of course, the lab they had been using when researching the fusion magic card.

Thinking back to those times when his knowledge grew at an incredible rate, Dark felt a warmth in his heart.

Last time, he had been a simple beneficiary of the research. This time, the roles were reversed, and he hoped he could be of some help to his senior.

Of course, participating in an experiment led by a top fourth-year student would also be highly beneficial to him.

The two chatted as they walked, and soon they arrived at the familiar lab.

"So, what’s the experiment about?" Dark finally asked as they entered the lab.

Pandora had been keeping it a mystery, and even now, she just blinked and said, "Take a guess."

"Why bother guessing..." Dark rolled his eyes. "If you’re asking me to assist, it’s probably related to fusion experiments, right?"

"Smart." Pandora playfully poked his forehead with a finger, smiling. "I want to explore the differences between magical spirits that can fuse and those that cannot."

Dark thought for a moment and said, "So, you’re trying to uncover the secret behind why some magical spirits can be used as fusion material?"

Pandora nodded. "That’s one way to put it."

Curious, Dark asked, "Senior, don’t you have fusion-capable magical spirits?"

Pandora met his gaze and replied with a question of her own, "Of course I do. Why?"

Dark quickly shook his head. "Nothing. What do you need me to do?"

Pandora pondered for a moment. "You just need to perform a fusion summon when I tell you to."

"That’s it?" Dark asked, surprised.

"That’s it," Pandora smiled.

Dark thought for a moment. "That sounds simple. But don’t you have magical spirits that can fuse, senior?"

Pandora shook her head and offered an excuse, "I do, but the ones I have are too large. After fusion, they become even bigger, which makes the research very inconvenient."

"Alright, I guess that’s a valid reason," Dark said, letting it go. "When do we start?"

Pandora made a gesture. "Right away, but first, help me set everything up."

"Okay, senior."

...

Pandora had clearly prepared in advance. She pulled out a whole row of pre-mixed potions from her backpack, along with a large number of tools, quickly filling the entire table.

"In the name of Pandora Doragon, magic summon!" After taking out her items, she activated a magical spirit card in her hand with a summoning spell.

As the summoning circle appeared, a magical spirit the size of a basketball emerged from it.

Dark curiously observed this magical spirit. It was clearly of the mech-type, resembling a small mechanical dragon with four claws and a round belly. It looked somewhat similar to Pandora's familiar spirit, the Young Winged Dragon, but its metallic belly had an ancient clock embedded in it.

"This is the [Clock Dragon]." Pandora extended her hand and caught the surprisingly heavy-looking Clock Dragon, gently stroking its back.

"The Clock Dragon’s body is made up of countless gears. It’s extremely sensitive to time, making it very helpful for my precise work."

She then took out another magic card and summoned a second magical spirit.

This one had an even stranger appearance.

Its body resembled a small lizard, but on top of its head was a disk larger than its body, inscribed with odd symbols that looked like tadpoles.

After summoning it, Pandora said, "[Glyph Lizard], a rare and unique magical spirit. It can convert the fluctuations of auras into specific symbols. If you get the chance, I recommend crafting one of these yourself."

"Clock Dragon, Glyph Lizard..." Dark tapped his forehead in thought. "I’ve heard of the Clock Dragon before, but is the Glyph Lizard so rare that it’s not even mentioned in most texts?"

Pandora smiled. "Something like that. I only managed to craft the Glyph Lizard by sheer luck, and it’s proven to be incredibly useful."

After saying that, she placed the Glyph Lizard in the center of the lab, setting it on the ground. Then, she pressed down on the disk atop its head.

In the next instant, the Glyph Lizard’s body deflated like a balloon with a "pop," turning into a piece of paper, while the disk expanded, tightly sticking to the floor and transforming into a strange magic circle.

As Dark watched curiously, Pandora pulled out a piece of paper from her backpack and handed it to him, pointing at the tools on the table. "Use this diagram to help me arrange these items."

Dark glanced at the paper. It depicted a complex array centered around the Glyph Lizard's disk.

The outer edges of the diagram were composed of metallic discs, metal beads, and metal tubes, giving the whole design an air of mystery.

"This is the Barros-Nagel Array, something you’ll learn about in the future," Pandora said casually, as she began setting up the experiment.

Dark grabbed some metal discs, beads, and tubes from the table and started arranging them around the Glyph Lizard's disk according to the diagram.

Just the setup alone took a full half hour.

After the two of them finished the final precise adjustments, they stood up, both breathing a sigh of relief.

Pandora, with slightly flushed cheeks, stood up and said, "You’ve been a great help. Without you, just setting up this array would’ve taken me at least an hour."

"It was nothing," Dark replied, curious. "Is this some kind of magnetic field apparatus?"

Pandora was slightly taken aback, then exclaimed in surprise, "You know about the Barros-Nagel Array?"

Dark shook his head and replied, "No, it just seems like something along those lines."

Pandora gave a nod of approval and said, "In any case, just prepare yourself a bit. Next, you only need to perform a fusion summoning on the disc of the Glyph Lizard."

Dark smiled and said, "No problem."

By this point, he had roughly figured out Pandora's experimental method.

The entire experiment had to be centered around the Glyph Lizard, a rare magical spirit that could transform energy fluctuations into diagrams and text.

As for the so-called Barros-Nagel Array, it could be some kind of amplification device, a stabilization mechanism, or even a filtering system.

In short, as long as the fusion summoning was performed within the Glyph Lizard’s disc, the fluctuations generated by the fusion would be converted into diagrams and text, which could then be compared with those produced by a normal summoning. This would reveal the differences between the two.

A simple method of comparison.

However, since the magical spirit used for the comparison was not the same one, even summoning in the same way could yield many differences.

Thus, the experimenter needed to have an incredibly deep knowledge base, as well as a large number of control groups and follow-up experiments to pinpoint that tiny difference unique to "fusion."

The following experiment proceeded almost exactly as Dark had imagined.

After Pandora gave the instructions, Dark summoned Gatomon and Black Gatomon one after the other within the Glyph Lizard's disc, then used the [Fusion] card.

Thus, Bastemon made her appearance once again.

However, since Dark had previously instructed Gatomon and DemiDevimon, Bastemon did not run around after her summoning but obediently sat in the disc, waiting.

As Dark began the summoning, the Barros-Nagel Array surrounding the disc emitted a visible magnetic field.

Within the magnetic field, extremely complex diagrams and texts appeared and constantly shifted.

The Clock Dragon, positioned on the experiment table, narrowed its eyes, grabbed a pen, and accurately sketched all the changes on paper.

"It's fine now." After the Clock Dragon finished its recording, Pandora spoke.

Dark then retracted Bastemon.

Immediately afterward, Pandora began summoning a magical spirit within the Glyph Lizard's disc, as expected.

But not only did she use a Normal Summoning Spell, she also used tribute summoning, Ritual Summoning, Reverse Summoning, and several other summoning techniques.

Through this, she gathered a large amount of comparative data!

Next, Pandora spread all the diagrams on the floor and began to meticulously study them.

Dark only took a glance and knew that, with his current level of understanding, it would be impossible to discern the so-called "differences."

However, after Pandora studied the diagrams for about an hour and a half, it seemed like she finally made a breakthrough.

She suddenly stood up, walked quickly to the experiment table, and began mixing potions using the prepared materials.

Each time she finished a potion, she sprinkled it onto the Glyph Lizard's disc and then recorded the resulting fluctuations and diagrams, comparing and analyzing them again.

During this process, Dark silently took on the task of cleaning up the potions.

At first, he cleaned up the mess himself.

But as Pandora's potion-making speed increased, Dark simply summoned [Trash Slime] to shine in its area of expertise.

By this point, Pandora had completely immersed herself in the experiment, seemingly oblivious to the passage of time.

Before long, dusk arrived, and the evening sky was painted with the colors of sunset.

Dark suddenly snapped back to reality, realizing it was already late.

He felt a bit dazed, then summoned Ditto, instructing it to help clean up the remaining potions alongside Trash Slime, before quietly leaving the lab.

He still had an astronomy class tonight.

Otherwise, he might have stayed in the lab all night.

...

During astronomy class, Professor Medea wasn’t affected by the Blood Princess incident at all. She continued teaching various astronomical knowledge as usual, supplementing it with astrology.

Dark, as always, brought Eevee to the class with him.

To enhance Eevee's learning efficiency, Dark would sometimes use [Pride III] to evolve Eevee into Espeon.

After evolving into Espeon, its "divination abilities" would greatly improve, making it much easier for it to comprehend astrological knowledge.

Even when Eevee reverted back to its original form, the knowledge and understanding it had gained remained intact.

Through this method, Eevee’s previously difficult learning journey had finally smoothed out, and it now had a relatively good foundation to build on.

From 7:30 to 9:00, the hour-and-a-half astronomy class finally concluded.

Dark packed up his books and immediately hurried back to the lab.

However, when he opened the door, he found Pandora still engrossed in the repetitive process of "comparing, potion-making, recording diagrams, and analyzing."

She was like the most precise machine, her mind unbothered by the monotony of the task or the passing of time.

"Thank you for your hard work." Dark patted Ditto, who had been helping Trash Slime with the cleanup, and took over the task himself.

As he used Trash Slime to clean the potions from the disc, he quietly observed Pandora.

There weren't many opportunities to quietly watch her like this.

Watching the light flickering across her face, Dark’s thoughts gradually drifted away from the experiment.

He began reminiscing about how he first met Pandora and the subtle changes she had undergone since then.

At first, her smile often hid a sense of indifference and insincerity, but over time, it had become more genuine.

Her changes were actually quite noticeable.

Especially after the Christmas holidays, her demeanor was noticeably different.

Of course, Dark wasn’t arrogant enough to think that he was the cause of this transformation.

As he recalled those moments, he slowly began to understand the clues he had missed before.

With the recent events in mind, he suddenly had a thought—an idea that, for some reason, felt incredibly plausible.

"Could it be that Pandora found her mother too?"

...

Once that thought emerged, it spiraled out of control.

He recalled how Pandora had gone to mourn in the Banished Forest after Christmas, which coincided with the time Bastille Prison had been breached.

The ones who escaped from the prison surely weren’t limited to just Ophelia Bullard...

Dark suddenly realized that he might have uncovered Pandora's secret!

"Even if it’s not her mother, it must be someone very closely related by blood."

  ……

  “Dark,Dark。”

  “Mhm,mhm?”
