Chapter 55: The King Beneath the Earth, Part 6
The miner, unlike Cinnabar, could not discern the true strength of their opponent.
As soon as Cinnabar grabbed him, he began to scream in terror. "Let me go! Run while you still can! Those things are invincible—they can't be harmed by weapons!"
He had witnessed his companions futilely attacking these creatures with their picks, leaving only faint white scratches on their stone-like hides. And when the beasts retaliated, a single swipe of their claws could shatter half a man’s body into pieces.
The memory of that nightmare still haunted him. But before he could finish his warning, the words caught in his throat.
In his wide, dark eyes, Brandon casually swung his sword to the right. The rock panther that had been circling around to attack them split cleanly in two, like cutting through soft clay, before crashing heavily against the cavern wall and crumbling into fragments.
The man froze, his jaw slack. "He... he..." He pointed at Brandon, then at Cinnabar, unable to form a coherent sentence.
"Quiet!" Cinnabar snapped, brushing his hand away. Yet even she couldn't help but marvel inwardly at how far Brandon's swordsmanship had advanced. Impressive, she thought. Truly remarkable.
Brandon himself had just realized the same thing. After effortlessly bisecting the iron-rank-level rock panther, he opened his status panel and noticed something new: his military swordsmanship skill now bore a "+2" suffix.
Though unsure where this bonus came from, he suspected it was tied to Kulan, the mine guard captain. He must have missed the system notification when he lost consciousness under the rubble earlier. This unexpected development left Brandon both startled and pleased. It wasn’t uncommon for players in Amber Sword to gain rare boosts by observing high-level NPCs' techniques, but such moments were akin to completing hidden tasks—requiring specific conditions to align perfectly.
Like the time Brandon had awoken to his grandfather’s swordplay within a dream. That breakthrough occurred because Su Fei’s soul carried an innate understanding of swordsmanship, coupled with Brandon’s deep familial ties and personal growth. Such advancements made sense in context.
But this? This felt oddly out of place.
Before Brandon could ponder further, another rock panther lunged at him. Instinctively, he slashed it aside. Growing impatient with these weak yet irritating creatures, he stepped back and leaped straight into the encircling horde.
The miner's face went beyond mere shock; he collapsed onto his rear, utterly astounded. Never had he imagined there existed such a formidable swordsman among the guards.
Brandon’s glowing crystal carved a brilliant arc through the darkness. In the next instant, several rock panthers were sliced in half and flung outward—

When the tremors struck Silver Mountain, news reached Shafrend Town almost immediately. The quake’s edge rippled through the streets, shaking the ground enough for everyone to feel it. Shopkeepers scrambled to steady their wares, preventing fragile pottery from smashing to the floor.
Losses were inevitable—several potters cursed loudly—but the broader impact was psychological. Panic spread quickly as rumors of the mine collapse circulated. Most residents had loved ones working in the mines, and fear took hold.
Word eventually reached Roma, who until then had been contentedly trying on a dress Brandon had gifted her—a maid-inspired outfit he’d picked up whimsically, partly motivated by guilt over never having given her much. Roma adored it, but while adjusting the garment during the quake, she smacked her forehead against the mirror frame, leaving a sizable bump.
Dizzy but curious, Roma rushed outside to question the two angelic guardians stationed outside her door. They feigned ignorance, so she turned to the innkeeper, who confirmed the worst—the mine had collapsed.
Roma blinked, processing the implications, then grew visibly worried. After a moment’s deliberation, she declared firmly, “I’m going to find Brandon.”
Turning to the angels, she added, “You’re coming with me.”
“Lady Roma,” the first angel protested, “Master would never approve.”
“Our orders are clear,” the second chimed in more bluntly. “Until Master returns, you are to remain here.”
“Besides,” the first angel reasoned, “we’re still here and unharmed, which means Master is fine too.”
But Roma, ever stubborn, replied with careful logic. “Exactly! Since Brandon’s okay right now, that’s all the more reason we should go help him. What if he’s trapped underground?”
Had Brandon known Roma’s words would prove prophetic, he might have schooled her on the dangers of careless speech. Alas, unaware of her plans, our spirited Roma remained undeterred.
Her proposal met stiff resistance from the angels, who dismissed her fanciful notions as better suited for writing children’s tales. Undeterred, Roma resorted to dramatics, rolling around dramatically beneath the covers whenever they ignored her demands.
Eventually, the angels learned to tune out her antics, agreeing amongst themselves that Master’s wisdom in teaching them patience was indeed profound. Meanwhile, Roma, now confident in their indifference, hatched her escape plan.
Donning traveler’s attire—a ludicrously puffy pumpkin skirt paired with pointed boots—she stuffed odd trinkets into a backpack, tied sheets together, and climbed out the window. With a cheeky grin toward the closed door, she prepared to descend.
Unfortunately, Roma overlooked one critical detail: the bedsheet rope wasn’t long enough.
Dangling mid-air, she muttered sheepishly, “Oh no… seems I’ve run into a bit of trouble…”
At that moment, Odum the dwarf happened to pass through the alley below. Rubbing his eyes, he confirmed what he saw—a girl in comically oversized pants swinging precariously from a makeshift rope.
After briefly wondering if today was some obscure festival (it wasn’t), Odum called up, scratching his chin. “What exactly are you doing, lass?”
“Sorry, sir,” Roma replied brightly. “The sheet wasn’t quite long enough.”
