Chapter 54: The King Beneath the Earth, Part 5

Not long after entering the fourth level, Brandon suddenly heard Cinnabar whisper softly, “My lord.”

“What is it?” he asked.

“Let me try to walk.” Her voice was barely audible.

Brandon glanced down and saw that the legendary resilience of the Divine Messenger held true even without her powers. Though she had lost her strength, her body’s recovery rate still far exceeded that of an ordinary person. He noticed that the wound on her thigh had already stopped bleeding and begun to scab over.

He hesitated for a moment before asking, “Are you sure?”

But under her insistence, Brandon eventually helped her down. When her feet touched the ground, Cinnabar winced slightly but quickly steadied herself. Though her movements were slow, with the support of her halberd, she could now walk on her own. Realizing this, Cinnabar seemed genuinely pleased. She looked up at Brandon with a bright smile. “My lord—”

Brandon rarely saw such an unguarded expression from the red-haired girl, and for a moment, he was taken aback.

But Cinnabar quickly became aware of her lapse and turned her head away.

Brandon thought to himself that she actually looked quite beautiful when she smiled, though there was no way he’d ever say that aloud. They continued in silence through the low tunnels until, after a short while, Brandon spotted something white in the distance ahead.

“What is it?” Cinnabar asked from behind him.

“It looks like something,” Brandon whispered. Knowing her vision was no better than an ordinary person’s in this dim environment—even with the glow of their crystal—he cautiously drew his sword and approached with Cinnabar close behind.

As they neared, they saw the figure of a man lying motionless on the ground. From his appearance, he seemed to be one of the miners. Brandon examined him closely and found no obvious wounds.

“He’s not dead,” Cinnabar said as she glanced at him.

Brandon noticed the faint rise and fall of the man’s chest; he was merely unconscious. Nodding, Brandon tried calling out to him, but when that failed, he gently splashed some water onto the miner’s forehead. Mindful of their limited supplies, Brandon used only a few drops.

Fortunately, the man soon stirred, blinking open his eyes. As consciousness returned, his first reaction was to recoil instinctively, bumping into the cold stone wall behind him. Seeing the panic in the miner’s eyes, Brandon reassured him, “We’re also trapped here. You have nothing to fear.”

The miner blinked in confusion before recognition dawned. Taking a deep breath, he studied them more carefully before relaxing. “Are you overseers? Guards?” His gaze flicked between Brandon’s sword and Cinnabar’s halberd. Weapons were typically carried only by overseers or soldiers in the mines, though neither Brandon nor Cinnabar wore uniforms.

“We’re guards,” Brandon replied, knowing the miners would recognize most of the foremen.

The man visibly relaxed but quickly tensed again. “Did you encounter monsters too?” he asked, noticing the bloodstains on Cinnabar.

“Monsters?” Brandon exchanged a glance with Cinnabar.

The only “monster” Brandon had summoned recently was his Wind Spirit Spider, which he’d used to scout ahead on the third level. Frowning slightly, he asked, “What kind of monsters?”

“Statues… stone-like creatures, may Marsha protect us,” the miner stammered.

“Stone-like creatures?” Cinnabar crouched beside Brandon, speaking softly.

Stone statues? Brandon thought of Vonder’s many rock-based creatures, such as the Gargoyle sentinels and war golems crafted by Buga’s Craftsman Wizards. Given the environment, earth elementals seemed more likely. After a moment’s consideration, he calmed the miner. “Don’t worry. We’re here now. Can you describe these creatures? Were they humanoid or beast-like?”

The miner exhaled heavily. “Beast-like, but made entirely of stone, sir. I swear I’m not mistaken.”

“Beast-like? Did they have wings?”

“No.” The miner’s answer was firm.

This puzzled Brandon. He hadn’t heard of any rock-based beasts fitting that description. While Vonder was home to countless strange creatures, most could be traced to specific origins. Rock or mud-based monsters were usually magical constructs or tied to the elemental plane of earth. Apart from Gargoyles and a few others, beast-like forms were exceedingly rare. Creatures from the earth elemental plane tended to resemble insects rather than beasts.

Seeing the miner growing uncertain again, Brandon quickly steadied him. “Was anyone else with you down here?” Miners typically worked in groups.

The man swallowed hard, as if just remembering. “Yes,” he said. “I came with my group, but we were scattered when the monsters attacked.”

His gaze shifted nervously toward the depths of the cavern. “I don’t know where they went… or if they’re still alive. Maybe the monsters chased them…”

He sounded both relieved and terrified.

“Oh!” The miner suddenly remembered something. “And Overman Mahan is here too.”

“Overman Mahan?”

“You don’t know him?” The miner looked surprised. “He’s the foreman of this area. They say he used to be in the army—his swordsmanship is excellent. When the quake began, he said he’d go ahead to investigate, and then the monsters appeared.”

Brandon inwardly sighed, realizing how close he’d come to slipping up. Fortunately, the worker’s guard was down around perceived allies.

But while the miner didn’t notice anything amiss, Cinnabar’s brow furrowed. “Didn’t the collapse start all at once? And what exactly did he go to investigate?”

Having grown up as a mercenary from a young age, Cinnabar’s mind was sharper and more alert than Brandon’s.

Hearing her words, Brandon caught on. “That’s right. Shouldn’t everyone have been seeking shelter instead?”

“No, no,” the miner hastily interjected. “The shaking wasn’t severe at first, and the rock layers here are sturdy. Besides, the tremors came from the south. Didn’t you feel it?”

The tremors came from the south—

This unexpected detail confirmed Brandon’s suspicions. Something significant had been unearthed beneath Shafrend Mine. Though he didn’t know Koven or the other youths personally, he couldn’t help but worry about their fates. Chances were they hadn’t survived. With a sigh, Brandon shook his head.

“It doesn’t seem like an earthquake,” Cinnabar murmured, turning to him.

Brandon had already decided to investigate further. Though the relics of the Silver Folk weren’t as rare as golden apples, they were still valuable. However, given the reward’s worth, the task wouldn’t be simple.

Suddenly, he raised a finger to his lips, signaling silence. “Shh—”

The tunnel fell quiet, save for the miner’s heavy breathing. Soon, both Cinnabar and the miner heard faint rustling sounds approaching from the south, like something skittering across the ground.

“They’re coming.”

The miner’s face turned deathly pale.

But Brandon lowered his sword, puzzled. There were many footsteps, but they sounded clumsy and unthreatening.

Soon, the “monsters” began emerging from the darkness. The first was a lithe, gray-white feline creature that stepped elegantly into the light of their crystal. Its gemstone-like gray eyes fixed on Brandon.

No—those were gemstones.

This sleek predator was no living beast but a statue brought to life—its eyes crafted from gray crystals.

Brandon immediately understood. These weren’t natural rock creatures but summoned entities, specifically earth elementals shaped into forms dictated by their summoner’s will.

“Is there an elven adept below?” he wondered briefly. “Or is something controlling these beings unconsciously?”

The latter seemed far more likely. If it were sentient equipment, even without intelligence, it would rank at least Tier One among fantasy artifacts—and possibly much higher.

Brandon felt a surge of excitement. Finally, he might witness a high-tier artifact in action.

As he pondered, more feline figures emerged from the shadows. A dozen or so prowled into view, their glowing eyes visible beyond the edge of the light. Over twenty stone panthers formed a semicircle around them.

But Brandon showed no fear. Stepping forward, he placed his sword before him. “Stay back, Cinnabar.”

Cinnabar grabbed the trembling miner, who was preparing to flee, and nodded to Brandon before retreating obediently. Though she lacked strength, her instincts told her these stone cats posed little threat—especially to Brandon.

With calm resolve, Brandon prepared to face whatever came next.
