Chapter 56: The King Beneath the Earth, Part 7

Odum had to exert considerable effort to bring the dangling girl down from her precarious perch. Though his face was stern, with thick eyebrows furrowed in disapproval, he muttered incessantly about how reckless and dangerous her actions were, not to mention the trouble she caused him.

But in the end, a question slipped out from beneath his beard: "Lass, are you hurt anywhere?"

"Ah."

The moment her feet touched the ground, Roma exhaled deeply, patting her chest with relief. "That was quite the adventure," she chirped cheerfully.

Her face, however, betrayed no sign of fear—only flushed cheeks and an expression of excitement.

Odum glanced at her, thinking, You call that an adventure? But before he could respond, Roma piped up enthusiastically, "It was so much fun!"

The old dwarf's expression immediately turned serious. "Lass, such thoughts are unwise. It was far too dangerous. What if I hadn’t come along? You could’ve been injured!"

"But you did come, sir," Roma replied matter-of-factly.

Odum scratched his head, realizing the flaw in his argument. Trying again, he lectured, "What if I hadn’t? And besides, your actions have greatly inconvenienced an old man like me. You’ve even delayed my drinking time—"

"My aunt says drinking too much is bad for your health," Roma interjected innocently.

Odum felt a headache coming on. How does this little one think so differently from everyone else? He began to regret rescuing her. Perhaps he should have pretended not to notice and gone straight to his ale.

No, perhaps he shouldn’t have looked up in the first place.

With growing frustration, Odum waved his hand dismissively. "We’re not discussing that now. Besides, what kind of dwarf doesn’t drink?" He paused, considering it improper to criticize someone behind their back, especially a woman. Changing tack, he continued, "In any case, one thing at a time. Normal people don’t hang from sheets in alleyways behind inns, do they?"

Though something about his words felt off, he couldn’t pinpoint the issue. Shaking his head, he dismissed the thought, though he lamented the dwindling prospect of enjoying his afternoon ale.

Meanwhile, Roma chimed in again, oblivious to the fact that she had already shifted the conversation onto her terms. Now, armed with her boundless energy and charm, she was ready to win over the old dwarf.

Roma tilted her head thoughtfully, then nodded. "You’re right," she admitted, though her delicate brows furrowed slightly. "But I had no choice. I’m in a hurry to get to the mine."

Odum blinked, taken aback. "What do you want with the mine? Women aren’t allowed there."

"Because the person I care about is in the mine, and the earthquake has me worried." Roma looked at the dwarf earnestly. Suddenly, her eyes sparkled. "Sir, can you take me there?"

"You don’t know the way?" Odum’s small eyes widened in disbelief.

"Apparently not," she said, seemingly unaware of the gravity of the situation.

Clearly, this young lady had once again fallen victim to her habit of acting first and planning later. She had conveniently forgotten all the embarrassing mishaps from her childhood.

There’s a saying that one shouldn’t make the same mistake twice, but our Roma seemed capable of repeating identical errors in endlessly creative ways.

This time, however, Odum burst into laughter—not just chuckles, but full-blown guffaws. Laughing so hard he nearly fell over, he muttered between gasps, "Truly amusing! Truly amusing! I’ve never heard of such a reckless plan, even among the most impulsive mountain dwarves. Not even the crudest orc would hunt without proper preparation."

Roma nodded approvingly. "Orcs have a saying: ‘Uim Auss Nemont.’ It means that a clever hunter isn’t always wise."

"That’s just animal cunning," Odum countered, shaking his head. "Who taught you that?"

"My Aunt."

"No, no," Odum groaned, feeling himself getting tangled in her logic. "That’s beside the point. We’re talking about recklessness, not orcish wisdom—" He stroked his beard, then suddenly frowned. "Wait, what did you say earlier? There was an earthquake at the mine?"

"Yes."

"How did I not hear about it?"

Roma stared at him with wide eyes.

Odum realized his question was foolish. If the quake had happened an hour ago, he’d probably been napping. He was supposed to be at the mine today, but he’d missed his shift due to drinking—something that had occurred more than once. However, he’d earned the trust of the scribe overseeing the operation by helping resolve a minor personal issue in the past. Whether or not he actually showed up for work wasn’t a concern for anyone; fewer workers meant less risk.

Thus, Odum preferred spending his free time sipping ale at The Trout in the Woods. Yet Roma’s words piqued his interest. He’d long known of a secret buried beneath the silver mine, having traveled here upon discovering its existence years ago. However, since the accident over a decade prior when miners broke through to the Great Hive, deeper excavation had ceased, leaving the secret undisturbed under Graharl Mountain.

Despite numerous attempts to persuade Orkins to reopen the fifth level, safety concerns always prevailed. In fact, the scribe wasn’t concerned about worker safety but rather avoiding unnecessary trouble.

As time passed, Odum grew increasingly disheartened. But now, hearing Roma speak, something stirred within him.

He muttered something to himself, then glanced at the girl and said. "Alright, alright. I’ll take you to the mine, but listen carefully—"

"I understand," Roma replied promptly, without hesitation.

"I haven’t finished yet!"

"Well, whatever you say, I’ll agree. So it doesn’t really matter when you say it."

"You’re refreshingly honest…" Odum sighed. "And oddly endearing."

Looking at Roma, he couldn’t help but recall the lively lasses of his youth in the gold dwarf settlement. Though human society might be more novel and dynamic, with superior brewing techniques, he believed dwarf maidens possessed far more vitality.

This girl reminded him of them—headache-inducing yet strangely appealing.

Still, Odum instinctively knew that indulging Roma’s whims would likely lead to chaos. As they walked, he warned, "Rules are important, lass. Do you understand?"

Roma nodded solemnly, but quickly raised another question. "But didn’t you say women aren’t allowed in the mine?"

"Don’t interrupt," Odum scolded, frowning. Of course, he couldn’t openly escort Roma inside, nor could he enter unnoticed. Fortunately, he’d prepared for situations like this. Years ago, he’d secretly dug a tunnel leading into the mining area. As a supervisor, his presence wouldn’t raise suspicion.

As for Roma, disguising her would require some creativity.

"Yes," Roma said, keeping pace as she pressed further. "But sir, aren’t mountain dwarves known for being reckless? Are you a mountain dwarf?"

"I am certainly not!" Odum stopped abruptly, clearing his throat emphatically. "Stop interrupting!"

"Oh."

---

The battle underground had concluded. When the last rock beast shattered into fragments, Brandon discovered the bodies of several miners. The man he’d revived earlier identified them as his former companions.

Since witnessing Brandon’s prowess, the miner had resolved to follow him and Cinnabar, refusing Brandon’s suggestion to retreat to the relatively safer third level. To him, staying with these two seemed far safer.
