Chapter 48: A Tedious Script
"Not important."
Viya flicked the staff forcefully. Due to its special material, the blood couldn’t coagulate on the surface and was easily flung to the ground, leaving a long, black streak.
"Do you ever feel bored?"
She suddenly asked a question that left Edith baffled.
"This is precisely what makes this island difficult—facing constant ambushes while cautiously advancing with the light," Edith replied carefully.
"Mm," Viya hummed.
"Do you know what’s going to happen next?"
"What?"
Edith reflexively asked.
Viya looked slightly weary. "We’ll move forward using the light source, and along the way, they’ll throw in some small monsters just to keep things interesting."
"Next, we’ll probably need to stay stealthy while gathering clues about the informant. There might be a safe room to help us evade the Night Tide."
"At some point, we’ll reunite with our respective teammates, chat for a bit, regroup, and continue sneaking until we reach the boss room, where the informant will appear."
"Then there’ll be a long, drawn-out conversation to flesh out the boss’s character and explain earlier plot holes before the boss fight even begins."
"After everyone puts in the effort to defeat the villain and starts dividing the loot, to make the story more dramatic, the only light source—the candle—will suddenly go out. Accompanied by tense music, everyone will have to sprint toward the exit."
"Then the roof will collapse, blocking the door. Just as we’re about to give up hope... the informant will come back to life, using its broken body to prop up the fallen structure so we can escape."
"At that moment, a sudden plot twist will redeem the informant… Good grief, how cliché can this script get?!"
She pressed her hand to her forehead as if trying to convey her exasperation, but her tone remained eerily calm, almost as if reciting scripture.
The stark contrast between her exaggerated frustration and detached demeanor created an unsettling sense of controlled madness.
"What are you saying?!"
Edith sensed something was off. She placed her hand on the hilt of her sword and pulled Ivy behind her protectively.
"What I mean is..."
Viya sighed and lowered her head.
After several seconds, she abruptly raised it again. Her ice-blue eyes shimmered with an innocent glimmer of hope.
She smiled—a childlike, pure smile.
"If the script is so tedious and boring, why not skip straight to the final act?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she slammed the end of the staff onto the ground. A sharp whistling sound swept through the area like a gale.
Under the influence of Banshee’s Kiss, Edith and Ivy’s minds went blank, freezing them in place.
The weapon, resembling both staff and halberd, flipped gracefully in Viya’s hands before lunging toward the two. Edith quickly snapped out of it, shoving Ivy away while using the recoil to dive in the opposite direction.
But the blade suddenly changed direction, flicking upward. Wind accompanied the strike, slicing past the candle in Ivy’s hand.
The whistle of the wind extinguished the candle, and thick white smoke rolled over them.
The light source they depended on vanished, plunging the corridor into darkness.
In an instant, the faint growls and footsteps that had been lingering disappeared, replaced by an eerie silence akin to the calm before a volcanic eruption.
"You lunatic!"
Seeing the candle destroyed, Edith shouted angrily.
To her, the other woman must have lost her mind to destroy the very light source they all relied on for survival.
The “madwoman” listened quietly. Even though Edith couldn’t see her face clearly, she could tell the other person was smirking, reveling in the chaos.
"They’re here," Viya suddenly said.
Here? What’s here?
Edith froze in confusion, but the events that followed answered her question.
Crash—
The windows shattered as beasts wreathed in black mist leaped into the corridor. Their limbs were elongated and deformed, their crimson eyes brimming with malice, and low, guttural growls emanated from their throats.
Crash, crash, crash—more windows broke, and several identical mist creatures bounded onto the corridor.
Without the windows to block it, moonlight provided faint illumination to the hallway. But it was clear these monsters feared only the light of the candle.
"Hmm~"
Unbelievably, the culprit behind all this now began humming a melody. With her staff in hand, Viya strode confidently toward the mist beasts.
...
Edith was a very rational person, which had brought her considerable success in both her work and social interactions.
But at this moment, she utterly despised her own rationality!
Because she tragically realized that the best course of action right now was to bury the hatchet and fight the Void Domain creatures together.
If they turned on each other, they’d surely die. But if they cooperated, there was at least a slim chance of survival.
Staring at the figure who seemed completely unguarded, Edith gritted her teeth in frustration.
She felt as though the other woman had calculated her personality perfectly, knowing she could safely turn her back without fear.
Edith took several deep breaths, nearly biting her teeth to pieces, before calming herself down.
A fiery, crimson laureate appeared on her forehead, and scorching flames gradually climbed up her sword. She turned her head to instruct Ivy:
"Don’t stay too close, but don’t stray too far either."
After Ivy nodded, Edith pushed off with her left foot, charging forward. She swung her sword fiercely at the nearest mist beast, the flames licking its twisted limbs. The monster’s massive momentum carried it crashing violently into the wall.
Her nerves were taut, her eyes darting around, searching for any signs of the creatures preparing to attack.
In contrast to Edith’s desperate attacks, Viya remained composed, moving effortlessly among the mist beasts as if she had godlike foresight. Whenever she had a moment, she casually struck the creatures’ heads with her staff.
Inky blood splattered across the walls, turning the scene gruesomely bloody.
...
On the other side.
"Victor, what do you think they’re doing right now?"
In the long corridor, Mithra held the candle in both hands and curiously asked the armored figure beside her.
"My lady, I believe they’re likely proceeding cautiously, much like us."
The paladin Victor’s voice was deep and polite as he responded to the curious woman’s question.
"That’s true."
Mithra nodded in agreement.
She hadn’t expected such good luck—to encounter a church paladin, someone whose strength and integrity were guaranteed.
"Come to think of it, our luck really isn’t great," she muttered, carefully stepping around the shadows before continuing. "We just randomly entered a Past Island, and it turns out to be one of the harder Tier Two islands."
"Please rest assured. We came prepared, and this is fundamentally a mechanism-based island," Victor reassured her.
He repeated, "Just be careful—extremely careful—and nothing major should go wrong."
"You’re right."
Meeting a well-prepared raid team this time really was fortunate... Mithra thought sincerely.
She realized she might have been overly worried about Viya, letting stereotypes cloud her judgment.
The other person wasn’t some chaotic troublemaker. If they calmed down and talked things through, surely they’d cooperate sensibly.
