Chapter 49: The Alluring Moment of Siren’s Requiem
"By the way, are you sure our talking won’t disturb these monsters?"
Mithra tossed a gold coin into the darkness. The moment it landed, an ear-piercing, teeth-grinding sound erupted—like metal being crunched and twisted apart.
Holding her candle, she took two cautious steps forward, dispelling the shadows to reveal the mutilated remnants of the coin on the ground.
"This bite force is terrifying," Mithra remarked in awe.
"Your wealth is equally intimidating," Victor chimed in, his voice tinged with admiration. A single gold coin was nearly half his monthly salary as a member of the church.
Just then, a distorted, elongated shadowy arm silently extended from behind Mithra, creeping toward the light source in an attempt to extinguish their protective flame.
Shhing!
A flash of steel sliced through the air. The grotesque arm was severed cleanly, its cross-section writhing with shadowy flesh that struggled but failed to regenerate. With a low growl, the limb retreated back into the darkness.
"The deeper we explore, the more frenzied and powerful these shadows become," Victor explained as he sheathed his sword. "Some may even be able to withstand the light and attack us directly."
As a seasoned paladin, he adjusted his breathing rhythm—a crucial skill for enduring prolonged battles.
"So, we should hurry and regroup with the others?" Mithra naturally picked up the thread of conversation.
"Provided we ensure our safety first," Victor added firmly. "If anything goes wrong, let me handle it."
As a holy knight, he was exceptionally skilled at combating creatures of the night. Moreover, since the lady beside him needed to protect the light source, it was only logical—and honorable—for him to take the brunt of the danger.
"Fair enough," Mithra said, relieved at the prospect of staying out of harm’s way.
Suddenly recalling something, she turned to Victor and asked, "Are your teammates also members of the church?"
"No, but they’ve made appropriate preparations and possess abilities to restrain shadows."
Victor furrowed his brow, sensing a hint of skepticism in the noblewoman’s tone. He elaborated further: "Edith might seem difficult to approach at first glance, but she’s actually quite gentle. As a member of the Lankton Detective Agency, her capabilities are beyond reproach."
Lankton Detectives?
Mithra’s pupils contracted. She hadn’t expected to encounter someone from that organization today.
Though it sounded like a disreputable street-level group, Lankton was, in reality, a vast private enforcement agency with contracts spanning across highly developed regions like Poye, Mohif, and Dunya. It was one of the few institutions with international law enforcement authority.
"That puts my mind completely at ease," Mithra murmured.
To work for such an organization—even as a second-ringer—meant Edith was among the elite of her rank.
Mithra relaxed slightly, her thoughts wandering:
I remember that detective agency prides itself on efficiency and swiftness. Their no-nonsense, decisive style isn’t something everyone can adapt to. Imagining Viya being directed by those so-called “experts,” begrudgingly sneaking around despite her reluctance…
A mischievous grin spread across Mithra’s face.
...
"Damn it, these monsters just keep coming!"
Edith cursed under her breath as her flaming sword pierced through another mist beast, twisting the hilt to obliterate its form. But for every monster she killed, two more appeared.
She exhaled sharply, pinning another lunging mist creature to the right wall. The phantom laureate above her head solidified, and roaring flames surged forth, temporarily repelling the encroaching horde.
After the candle had been extinguished, the corridor underwent a subtle transformation. The walls widened, and the rear barrier vanished, leaving them vulnerable to attacks from three directions: front, back, and right.
While catching her breath, Edith glanced at the figure still battling fiercely ahead of her.
"Is she never going to tire?"
Out of professional habit, even amidst intense combat, Edith instinctively monitored her teammate’s condition. What she discovered left her astounded.
In just a few short minutes, the girl had cast seven or eight laureate spells without showing any signs of mana depletion. She looked as energetic as ever.
Could she possess a mana regeneration-type laureate?
Edith dismissed the thought almost immediately. Such laureates were rare and prohibitively expensive, even on the open market. For a First Ring Ascender to wield one seemed absurdly extravagant.
"...”
Viya remained focused, effortlessly fending off the waves of mist beasts. Of course, she wasn’t tired—her skills operated on cooldowns, not mana bars.
The downside? Her stats were somewhat lacking, and without specialized attacks, it took three or four strikes to down a single mist creature.
Gripping both ends of her staff, Viya summoned a crystalline laureate resembling amethyst. Her pupils darkened, and an invisible ripple radiated outward.
The chaotic mana around her suddenly stilled, pulsating rhythmically like plucked strings.
The ferocious mist beasts slowed their movements. Driven by primal instincts, they felt an inexplicable surge of fear, causing them to shrink back hesitantly, losing cohesion.
Siren’s Requiem!
This laureate, born of mythic bloodlines, finally revealed its true potential.
The wave of negative emotions brought by the Seed of Fear not only disrupted the enemies’ actions but also allowed Viya’s attacks to pierce through the mist beasts’ tough exteriors with ease.
Combined, these effects gave Viya complete control over the battlefield.
"A domain skill? How does a First Ring Ascender have access to such a laureate?" Edith muttered in disbelief.
She felt a torrent of pent-up negativity—frustrations accumulated from everyday life—but perhaps because she wasn’t the primary target, the emotions dissipated as quickly as they came.
Still, why did this girl possess such a rare laureate, one that would be prized even in higher-tier Void Domains?
Recalling the other bizarre behaviors displayed earlier, Edith began forming a hypothesis in her mind.
"Sister…"
Edith snapped to attention, turning to check on Ivy behind her. The poor girl had been paralyzed with fear, trembling violently and cowering against the wall.
"It’s okay, it’s all right…"
Edith moved to comfort her, but her movements froze mid-step—not because of another wave of mist beasts or imminent danger.
It was the silence.
The screeching of claws against wooden walls, the low growls of mist beasts, the shifting footsteps—all sounds had vanished without a trace. An eerie stillness enveloped the corridor.
A chilling premonition crept over her. Slowly, like a rusted machine, she turned her head.
Edith saw the "madwoman" halt her attacks, saw the mist beasts cease their assaults, bathed in the pale, cold moonlight.
Hunter and prey shared an unspoken truce, gazing together into the depths of the corridor where the moonlight couldn’t reach.
To her astonishment, the shadowy monsters lowered their bodies, spreading their elongated limbs wide, almost flattening themselves against the ground like massive spiders.
Were they… bowing?
The absurd thought flashed through Edith’s mind, but she quickly dismissed it.
These Void Domain creatures were simple beasts driven by basic emotions—excitement when spotting prey outside the light, anger when injured, fear when threatened. Complex emotions like reverence had no place in their primitive minds.
A bead of cold sweat trickled down her forehead. Experience told her that whenever something defied logic, it usually signaled that things had spiraled out of control.
