Chapter 206: "Grandma’s Little Huanhuan"

After a week of being a couch potato at home, Gu Lang received a call from Chen Bai near the end of the month. The promotional teaser for Douyu’s version of Survivor Island had gone live on the homepage—a montage of VCR clips featuring the seven participating streamers.

Aside from the trailer, what irked Gu Lang most was an official popularity poll set up on the event page. From the moment the teaser dropped, all registered Douyu users could vote for their favorite streamer by gifting money. One yuan equaled one vote. And predictably, Gu Lang found himself at rock bottom in terms of votes.

“Damn it! This is rigged! How could I possibly be last?!”

In his study, Gu Lang slammed his fist against the desk and let out an indignant roar, earning him nothing but a disdainful glance from Wang Ping.

Not wanting to stick around with this ranting lunatic, Wang Ping grabbed his tablet and retreated to his room, settling onto his cozy little bed to watch the teaser alone.

The room was quiet, save for Little Four—the now-domesticated wolf pup—who had run off to play with Dahei again.

Ever since arriving at Shengjiawu, Little Four had become unusually clingy—not just to people but specifically to Wang Ping. Perhaps due to the sudden change in environment, he’d initially been timid. But after a week, he’d warmed up considerably, often trailing behind Dahei like a shadow.

As they grew more familiar, Little Four’s courage blossomed. He even dared to bite Dahei’s tail while frolicking around. Fortunately, Dahei was patient enough not to chase him away. If anyone tried that with Wang Ping, though, they’d regret it deeply.

Snuggling into his soft down pillow with a contented sigh, Wang Ping picked up his stylus and opened the Douyu homepage, navigating to the event page.

A melancholic background score played as aerial footage of an island appeared on screen. The camera panned closer, revealing pristine white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, rugged rocks battered by waves, dense forests, and rolling hills—all untouched by human civilization.

“This uninhabited island lies 100 kilometers offshore from China’s coastline, untouched throughout the year. It remains undeveloped, preserving its primitive beauty. For this challenge, Douyu has gathered seven wilderness streamers who will embark on a true survival journey on this deserted island.”

As the narration continued, portraits of the seven streamers popped up alongside brief introductions.

First came Yang Xu, a rugged-looking man with a buzz cut, wearing a camouflage vest. His chiseled face, muscular build, and determined gaze immediately commanded attention. This was none other than the outdoor legend Gu Lang admired so much.

According to the captions, Yang Xu had once trekked across the Taklamakan Desert, ventured into South American swamps, and survived in Shennongjia using only grass skirts. In short clips, viewers saw him devouring bizarre creatures—scorpions, earthworms, venomous snakes, lizards—making even seasoned adventurers cringe.

Wang Ping whistled under his breath. “This guy’s hardcore,” he muttered. No wonder someone like Gu Lang idolized him.

Next up was Ding Yi, a slightly younger round-faced man who looked about Gu Lang’s age. Despite his youthful appearance, Ding Yi’s resume mirrored Yang Xu’s. True to his name, Ding Yi embodied perseverance. Wherever Yang Xu went, Ding Yi followed—and stayed longer, enduring harsher conditions.

Unlike Yang Xu’s raw survivalism, Ding Yi excelled in crafting tools and shelters. Clips showed him building elaborate wooden huts and handmade implements in the wild.

Watching closely, Wang Ping deduced that Ding Yi clearly aimed to dethrone Yang Xu as the top dog in the outdoor streaming scene. Judging by current popularity metrics, he seemed poised to give Yang Xu a real run for his money.

The remaining participants paled in comparison. Third place went to Yi Jiuyang, a college senior whose stage name sounded oddly theatrical. A close friend of Ding Yi, the two frequently collaborated on streams, boosting each other’s ratings through joint appearances.

Then came Gu Lang and Wang Ping.

Wang Ping grimaced at the poster where his image had been forcibly Photoshopped onto Gu Lang’s shoulder. That sneaky bastard hadn’t even asked before handing over the selfie taken back in the Greater Khingan Range. Now everyone saw Gu Lang striking a heroic pose with a Buzz-Cut Bro flexing tiny biceps atop his shoulders.

“So stupid…”

Wang Ping couldn’t bear to look further.

Gu Lang’s introduction remained standard fare, highlighting his feat of crossing Qiangtang Plateau. Particularly impressive was the segment showing him facing off against wolves during the latter half of the trek, which stood out among the others. Viewers unfamiliar with the backstory might assume he traversed the entire plateau on foot.

The final male participant baffled Wang Ping entirely.

According to the bio, this person wasn’t even a contracted Douyu streamer—or a professional one for that matter. Just an outdoor enthusiast dabbling in streaming under the peculiar alias “Han Daxia.” Clearly a stage name, perhaps chosen for the program itself. Was Douyu scraping the barrel to fill spots?

Lastly came the two female streamers, introduced with fanfare suggesting they were headliners.

Hu Li and Li Mengdie differed starkly. Like Gu Lang, Hu Li leaned toward comedic outdoor content. While Gu Lang’s show flirted with pet-centric themes, Hu Li focused solely on food—specifically exotic delicacies found in remote villages or wilderness areas.

Li Mengdie, however, was pure wilderness royalty. Her style aligned closely with Yang Xu and Ding Yi, yet her striking beauty and status as the sole prominent female wilderness streamer elevated her popularity beyond both. Together, she and Yang Xu ruled Douyu’s outdoor channel as king and queen.

“Hu Li… Fox… Why does that name sound familiar?” Wang Ping scratched his chin but couldn’t recall encountering it anywhere else.

It wasn’t just the name; something about Hu Li’s face struck a chord too. Then again, most internet celebrities shared similar features these days—it hardly mattered.

Finally, the seven contestants appeared side by side onscreen. Yang Xu and Ding Yi took center stage flanked by Hu Li and Li Mengdie, pushing the rest to the sidelines. Bold text scrolled across the screen: “Seven Streamers, Who Will Emerge as the True Wilderness King? Find Out in Survivor Island!”

“Tch, Douyu really knows how to stir the pot…”

Scrolling down, Wang Ping noticed heated comments already brewing between Yang Xu and Ding Yi’s fanbases. Even before the show began, tensions ran high.

“Let Uncle Xu lead you to victory!”

“For survival skills, look no further than Ding Yi. Yang Xu barely lasts days outside, always munching on bugs—how boring!”

“Wilderness survival means returning to society fastest and easiest—are you dumb?”

“When it comes to streamers, only Ding Yi deserves respect. Everyone else is trash… except maybe Jiuyang.”

Skimming through the vitriol, Wang Pink felt a growing sense of ennui. Wasn’t he and Gu Lang merely extras in this grand scheme?

But then, amidst the chaos, a glowing comment surfaced at the top: “Gu Lang’s streams are unmatched! Not only do they showcase nature’s beauty, but they also feature adorable pets—so entertaining! Love Gu Lang the most!”

Squinting, Wang Ping checked the commenter’s ID: “Grandma’s Little Huanhuan.” Not only did this user leave glowing praise, they gifted ten thousand voting points, catapulting Gu Lang to fourth place overnight.

“Tsk, Gu Lang, can you have any less shame…”
