Chapter 207: "Oh, My Big Mouth!"
As a “functionally illiterate” honey badger, Wang Ping naturally didn’t throw a tantrum over someone registering an account with the username “Grandma’s Little Huanhuan.”
However, Wang Ping loathed uncouth behavior more than anything. So, later that afternoon, Gu Lang found himself on the receiving end of a beating—courtesy of Wang Ping—for laughing too loudly in his soundproofed study. The noise allegedly disturbed Grandma’s nap downstairs.
Over the next week, Douyu ramped up its promotional efforts for the streamers both online and offline. Beyond dominating Douyu’s main platform, ads popped up across major social media platforms. Elevator screens in office buildings of first-tier cities featured posters of the seven contestants—some solo, others grouped together.
The most surreal moment came one evening after dinner when Grandma insisted everyone gather in the living room to watch TV. To their surprise, a commercial for Survivor Island aired on Oriental TV.
Spotting Gu Lang’s determined face flash across the screen for a fleeting few seconds, Grandma turned to look at him with a mix of astonishment and newfound admiration—as if seeing her grandson in an entirely different light.
“Oh, so this time you’re heading to an island?”
Grandma, seated comfortably on the couch while stroking Wang Ping’s fur, eyed the tropical paradise displayed onscreen with curiosity.
Little Four perched at Grandma’s feet, watching enviously as Wang Ping’s white tuft was molded into various shapes by Grandma’s fingers. A flicker of envy crossed the wolf pup’s face.
Wang Ping rolled his metaphorical eyes. You think I’m enjoying this?
“Yes, yes!” Gu Lang nodded enthusiastically like a bobblehead doll, plastering on a nervous smile. He feared Grandma might suddenly declare, “No way are you going!”
Much to his relief, Grandma seemed unperturbed this time. After all, if even television commercials promoted the event, and multiple participants were involved, safety likely wouldn’t be an issue. She pressed on, “So, which channel will your show air on?”
“Uh… actually, it won’t be on TV,” Gu Lang scratched his head, unsure how to explain.
The livestream would run continuously as long as the channel stayed active—a feat impossible for any traditional broadcaster to replicate around the clock. Perhaps if Douyu hired a professional editor to compile highlights into episodic content, broadcast opportunities could arise.
“What a pity…” Grandma sighed, lamenting something unspoken, then proclaimed proudly, “My grandson has made it big—on TV no less!”
“Grandma… it was just a few seconds; who’d even notice…” Gu Lang waved dismissively, feigning modesty but unable to suppress a grin. Before long, he chuckled aloud at the absurdity.
His laughter faded quickly when Grandma turned to him with earnest eyes. “Why don’t you take some tea packets along? Perfect chance to promote our family brand.”
Gu Lang’s smile froze instantly.
He envisioned a desolate island where ragged figures huddled around a campfire discussing survival strategies. Suddenly, one person whips out tea bags, brewing a pot. Energized by the drink, they transform the barren isle into a modern utopia. Finally, holding a packet triumphantly before the camera, the spokesperson declares, “For green tea, only Shengjiawu!”
“No!” Gu Lang mentally banished the image, forcing a strained laugh. “Grandma, Douyu organizes this program—we can’t advertise independently.”
“I see…” Grandma resumed watching TV but abruptly swiveled back moments later. “Never mind this time. You’ll venture out on your own eventually! Just bring them along then!”
Gu Lang groaned inwardly. Oh, my big mouth!
“Haha…”
Wang Ping sprawled across Grandma’s lap, his furry face brimming with schadenfreude as he watched Gu Lang squirm uncomfortably. Unable to contain himself, Wang Ping burst out laughing.
The trembling shoulders caught Grandma’s attention. Patting Wang Ping’s fluffy head, she mused, “Almost forgot—you always carry this little guy around. I’ll have custom labels sewn onto Huanhuan’s outfits.”
Wang Ping mirrored Gu Lang’s earlier sentiment. Oh, my big mouth!
This visit home proved brief. On September 1st, bright and early, Gu Lang departed Shengjiawu with Wang Ping in tow. By the time Little Four woke up searching frantically for his mother, they had already arrived at Xiaoshan Airport, boarding a flight bound for Qingdao.
Traveling domestically meant no quarantine period for pets. At nine o’clock sharp, the plane touched down at Liuting Airport. Two Douyu staff members awaited them outside the terminal.
Dressed casually in a white T-shirt and jeans, sporting sunglasses and carrying a small satchel along with Wang Ping’s carrier, Gu Lang navigated Terminal 1’s bustling hall toward Exit A as instructed by Chen Bai.
To avoid drawing crowds, Wang Ping remained quietly crouched inside the carrier. Yet, before reaching the exit, Gu Lang was intercepted. Two young girls, backpacks slung over their shoulders, dashed ahead, turning to scrutinize his face intently.
Removing his sunglasses, Gu Lang regarded the pair quizzically. “Can I help you?”
Assuming they sought directions amidst the crowded hallways cluttered with obstructed signs, he anticipated routine inquiries.
Uncertainty lingered on their faces until Gu Lang removed his shades—then recognition sparked excitement. Likely inspired by recent tales of Gu Lang’s adventures with the wolf king in Tibet, these fans finally identified him.
“Aren’t you… Gu Lang?” One short-haired girl nearly slipped, correcting herself mid-sentence.
As the duo pointed and exclaimed, curious onlookers turned, expecting a celebrity sighting. Spotting Gu Lang’s face, confusion reigned. Who was this? Some washed-up idol?
If Wang Ping recalled correctly, this marked Gu Lang’s inaugural airport fan encounter. His acute hearing discerned Gu Lang’s accelerated breathing and heartbeat.
“That’s right, I’m Gu Lang. Nice to meet you!” Summoning polite charm, Gu Lang stashed his sunglasses and extended a hand for a handshake.
But the girls ignored his gesture, whipping out smartphones instead. Pointing excitedly at the carrier, they pleaded, “Is Pingping inside? Can we take a picture together? I adore him!”
Gu Lang grimaced internally. How infuriating! But politeness must prevail.
Retracting his still-extended arm, he forced a brittle smile. “Hehe… Sure thing! Of course!”
