Chapter 185: Unexpected Gains (Part 1)

“…”

Watching Amy’s smile freeze as she instinctively touched her chest, Leon’s lips twitched involuntarily, and his toes curled in discomfort.

To avoid any more damning remarks from the other room that might escalate the awkwardness to new heights, Leon quickly stood up and opened the door to his room, issuing an invitation:

“Why don’t we… talk in my room?”

“Yes…”

Amy, her face slightly flushed, nodded eagerly and picked up her bag again, following Leon into his room.

Once Leon firmly shut the door behind them, blocking out keywords like “papaya soup,” “size,” and “sister-in-law,” Amy let out a sigh of relief. She glanced at Leon with a sheepish expression and said:

“Mr. Leon, I actually came here to invite you to visit my family. You saved me from the Marseilles, and you’re a great benefactor to us all. My parents really want to meet you.”

“If it weren’t for Mom still being unwell and Dad needing to care for her while managing the company, they would’ve come with me today. Please believe me—we just want to thank you properly.”

“This…”

Leon hesitated, then apologized sincerely:

“I’m not outright refusing your invitation. It’s just that work has been incredibly busy lately. I can’t even guarantee I’ll be home at night. After talking with Anna for a bit, I’ll have to rush back to headquarters. Honestly, I don’t have time right now.”

“Well… I understand,” Amy murmured.

After pouring her heart into the invitation only to be turned down again, the doll-faced girl lowered her head, disappointment flickering across her eyes.

Clutching her fists tightly in frustration, she didn’t push further or try to change Leon’s mind. Instead, she lifted her head and asked hopefully:

“Mr. Leon, is there anything I can do to help with your work? Please don’t misunderstand—I’m not trying to force you to visit.”

“But since you’re so busy and can’t accept our thanks in person, at least let me do something within my ability. Give us a chance to show our gratitude, okay?”

“This…”

Looking at the earnest, wide-eyed girl who was humbling herself before him, Leon found it hard to refuse completely. He hesitated before replying:

“We’re currently tracking some rebels at the bureau, but their whereabouts are extremely elusive. Even the Police Department’s Secret Investigation Division hasn’t made much progress. If your family has any connections, could you keep an eye out for them?”

“Just observe—don’t take any risks. These rebels possess things your family wouldn’t stand a chance against.”

Rebels?

At Leon’s words, Amy blinked, seemingly recalling something.

After a brief hesitation, she spoke softly:

“As for the rebels… Our department store used to have some dealings with them. If you’re looking for them, maybe we can actually help.”

Oh? An unexpected lead?

Leon raised his eyebrows in surprise. Originally planning to wrap up this meeting quickly, he took a deep breath instead and gestured for her to sit on the only bed in the room. He grabbed a small stool and sat opposite her, asking seriously:

“Miss Amy, could you elaborate a bit more?”

“Ah, sure…”

Amy glanced nervously at Leon, whose bright, focused eyes were fixed intently on her. For some reason, she felt uneasy, unsure where to place her hands or feet.

Mr. Leon… is such a capable and reliable man.

Gazing at his composed demeanor and sharp gaze, Amy couldn’t help but admire him despite his modest attire. Biting her lower lip lightly, she began:

“Mr. Leon, you know our family runs the largest department store chain in the capital, right?”

“Yes—and your prices are also the lowest.”

“Exactly. Besides being the biggest, cheapest, and most widespread, our stores carry the widest variety of goods. My father, as vice president of the Chamber of Commerce, has excellent relations with the House of Commons and several government departments. He secured sales permits for almost every category of merchandise—even selling small firearms with reduced range capabilities before the citywide gun ban.”

After briefly explaining the characteristics of The Char Department Store, Amy continued thoughtfully:

“Right before the gun ban was enforced, someone purchased nearly a hundred nail guns in batches from over a dozen of our stores. Worried these weapons might cause trouble and implicate our business, my father investigated and was shocked to discover that this group had been doing business with us for years.”

For years?

Leon frowned.

“These people—are they the rebels? Are you saying they bought a lot of nail guns from your department store?”

“Not many nail guns.”

Amy shook her head.

“My father is very cautious. Even though firearms sales were profitable, he never stocked them extensively, keeping only a few counters in select stable branches. What these people bought in large quantities were ordinary supplies—seasonal clothing, oil, salt, sugar, alcohol, blankets, food ingredients, utensils, and so on.”

“And not just once or twice—it was a prolonged, steady pattern of discreet purchases. Clothing twice a year, oil and salt monthly or bimonthly, and fresh produce weekly in bulk.”

Finishing her explanation, Amy looked at Leon, who seemed deep in thought.

“To this day, their purchasing hasn’t stopped. My father calculated the quantity of supplies involved—it’s enough to sustain about seven to eight hundred people normally. At its peak, it reached provisions for nearly a thousand individuals.”

“The scariest part is that this group of nearly a thousand people went entirely unnoticed. If they hadn’t suddenly bought those nail guns right before the ban, drawing my father’s attention, no one might ever have discovered their existence.”

“After spotting the anomaly, though my father avoided direct contact due to caution, he compared news reports of rebel activities with fluctuations in their supply consumption. That’s how he deduced who they likely are.”
