Chapter 184: Everyday Life
“Melanie.”
As Leon was still puzzling over the situation, an irritated voice called out from the direction of the Happiness Residence’s main hall.
Anna stormed out of the front door, grabbing Melanie by the scruff of her neck before the mischievous girl could escape. With one hand on her hip and the other pinching Melanie’s ear, Anna scolded:
“Don’t say such nonsense! Miss Amy just moved in next door and came to visit as a neighbor. How does that make her your sister-in-law?”
Amy?
At Anna’s reprimand, Leon quickly recalled: this was the young lady from the Char Department Store—the one he’d recommended to move into Happiness Residence before learning she was the store owner’s daughter. After being kidnapped by the Marseille family, her relocation plans had seemingly fallen through. Leon had rescued her from Rose Manor and assumed she wouldn’t consider moving anymore. Clearly, he was wrong.
“Anna.”
Under the watchful glare of the burly old gardener, Leon cautiously approached the fence. His “brotherly instincts” kicked in, prompting him to intervene on behalf of the squirming Melanie, whose ear was turning red.
“She’s still young and probably doesn’t fully understand what she’s saying. Just give her a light lesson so she knows not to blurt things out. No need to be too harsh… Look, her ear’s all red.”
“That’s right, Sister Anna. Let go. Melanie doesn’t know any better,” chimed in William, nodding solemnly.
“She even told me earlier that after you marry Miss Amy, we should go scavenging through trash bins nearby to find nephews or nieces first. She doesn’t even know where babies come from—it’s probably just idle talk.”
“…”
True enough…
Compared to Leon’s futile attempts at persuasion, William’s intervention proved remarkably effective. Anna’s anger, which wasn’t very strong to begin with, fizzled out instantly. She released Melanie’s ear.
“This time I’ll let it slide.”
After gently rubbing Melanie’s reddened ear, Anna crouched down and patted her back soothingly.
“It’s not that I want to control you, but Miss Amy isn’t married yet. If gossipmongers overhear such comments, it might cause trouble for her. So please don’t say these things, okay?”
“Okay…”
Melanie mumbled reluctantly, “But Miss Amy really is perfect. Why can’t she marry Big Brother?”
“Well…”
Caught off guard by Melanie’s question, Anna glanced at Leon before explaining patiently:
“Whether or not Miss Amy marries your brother is entirely up to her. These decisions depend on how she feels…”
“Then I’ll ask her now if she wants to marry him!”
“Oh no, you don’t!”
Anna grabbed Melanie’s collar again, halting her enthusiastic march toward the neighboring house. Narrowing her eyes suspiciously, she demanded:
“What’s gotten into you today? Why are you so fixated on making Miss Amy your sister-in-law?”
“I…”
“It might be because Miss Amy is more generous,” interjected William matter-of-factly, crossing his arms like a miniature adult.
“The busty lady who left our house this morning gave us each only one candy as a gift. But Miss Amy, on her first visit, brought Melanie a new dress. I think Melanie figures that since Big Brother has to marry someone anyway, it might as well be the more generous Miss Amy—so she gets more presents.”
“…”
“No! That’s not true!” protested Melanie, panicking as she sensed Anna’s growing irritation. “I'm just closer to Miss Amy. It's not because of any gift.”
“She’s lying,” William declared without hesitation, betraying his twin sister under Leon and Anna’s inquisitive gazes.
“When we were digging for worms earlier, she told me Big Brother seems to prefer busty women. Worried Miss Amy wouldn’t stand a chance, she forced me to sneak bowls of papaya soup Anna drinks every day to help ‘plump her up.’”
“…”
Hearing this, both Leon and Anna froze awkwardly, exchanging glances laden with surprise and embarrassment.
So you drink papaya soup every day? Leon thought.
No wonder you chose Miss Veronica. Anna mused.
Without saying a word, they simultaneously turned their attention back to Melanie.
“You’re lying!” Melanie pleaded desperately, sensing an impending disaster. “I never said those things!”
“You did say it.”
William nodded solemnly. “And you promised me two days with your favorite doll if my efforts worked and made Miss Amy our sister-in-law.”
He paused, wrinkling his nose disdainfully. “How childish. I’m too old for dolls. You’d have better luck bribing me with a tin frog.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” cried Melanie, glaring at him accusingly.
"If you want to play with the tin frog, I could’ve borrowed one for you! Why did you have to sell me out?"
"A borrowed one is never as good as your own!" William reasoned earnestly.
“Helping you steal Anna’s soup would’ve meant getting beaten—and all I’d get is a temporary tin frog. But reporting you means Anna won’t punish me—and might even buy me a frog. What would you choose?”
“…”
“Don’t worry, your punishment won’t be in vain. Once I get my tin frog, I’ll let you borrow it for a couple of days.”

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
The door to the neighboring house opened, revealing a cherubic-faced girl carrying a large bag filled with items. Smiling brightly, she greeted Leon:
“Mr. Leon, I’ve moved here to be your neighbor!”
“Welcome, welcome.”
Though curious about her decision to move to Happiness Residence, Leon refrained from asking out of politeness. Instead, he invited her inside and gestured toward the bag in her hands.
“What’s that…?”
“A few small gifts.”
The girl batted her wide, innocent eyes as she unpacked the contents, spreading them out proudly.
“They’re nothing fancy. The most expensive item is this winter coat…” She held it up. “Your coat got torn by the roses at Rose Manor when you saved me, so I thought I’d repay you. This perfume is for Anna—it’s a blend I made myself; it didn’t cost much besides the ingredients. And here are some toys for William and Melanie… Oh, speaking of which, where are they? I heard them running upstairs just now.”
Leon stiffened slightly at her question, glancing toward the closed inner room before stammering:
“Uh… They must be catching up on homework. Schools assign quite a bit these days…”
“I WAS WRONG!”
A familiar wail interrupted Leon’s rambling.
“Miss Amy’s chest isn’t small—it’s fine! No need for papaya soup! Sister Anna, you also don’t need it, stop hitting me! Waaah, I truly understand my mistake!”
