“…”
He has his own burdens to bear?
Recalling the arrogant, self-centered freckled prince who practically had “asking for trouble” tattooed across his face, Leon couldn’t help but let out a low scoff.
Fine.
If he has his reasons, I can at least show some sympathy. Next time he crosses me, I’ll beat him with compassion in my eyes.
…
“Uh, hold on a second.”
After mulling over how to handle his soon-to-be brother-in-law, Leon paused and reconsidered Emma’s words. Something didn’t quite sit right. He finally voiced his doubt:
“That nightmare from the King of Nightmares—shouldn’t it reflect past regrets? But Joshua was dreaming about future events. Could it just be a regular nightmare?”
“I considered that possibility, but it’s highly unlikely.”
Emma shook her head.
“Ordinary dreams are fragmented, not smooth, continuous, or logically coherent. They also don’t cause such severe mental damage. Besides, he’s lost all memory of Princess Veronica. How could he dream about her if he doesn’t even know who she is?”
“True…”
Leon nodded, agreeing with Emma’s reasoning but still furrowed his brow.
“So what’s going on? Are you saying even an entity like the King of Nightmares can make mistakes with their powers?”
“I don’t know either,” Emma admitted, shaking her head.
“My knowledge of dreams, souls, and the mind is limited. I plan to ask Chief first and see if she has any insights… Oh, Leon, are you coming back to headquarters with me, or heading home?”
“I’ll go home.”
Glancing at the sky, Leon touched the photograph in his pocket and smiled.
“It’s Wednesday. Shipbridge Academy lets out early today. Anna should already have brought the kids home by now, so I’ll get there just in time. As for Prince Joshua’s dream, I’ve only just heard of the King of Nightmares. Even if I went back, I wouldn’t be much help. Just wait until you and Chief figure it out, Emma, and then tell me what I can do.”
“Alright, I won’t see you off.”
Emma waved down two steam carriages waiting by the curb, paid for Leon’s fare before he could, and climbed into her carriage. After a moment’s hesitation, she leaned out to ask:
“Leon, do you remember when I asked you to do me a favor?”
“Yes. Of course I remember.”
Leon, about to board his carriage, froze and turned around with a serious expression.
“Senior, you’ve taught me so much about working at the Cleansing Bureau, and you saved my sister’s life at the hospital. Anything you need, just name it.”
“You’re calling me ‘senior’ again…”
Emma blinked, exasperated but smiling.
“Well, since you’re offering, I won’t be shy. Next month is my daughter’s birthday. I’m her mother, but I haven’t spent much time with her, so I’m clueless about what kids like. You have three siblings; surely you know more than I do. Could you spare a day to help give her a birthday she won’t regret?”
So that’s what she meant earlier? Just helping her daughter celebrate a birthday? Is this the favor she mentioned before?
Leon was momentarily taken aback but found no reason—and no desire—to refuse. After a brief pause, he nodded firmly.
“Sure. What day?”
“The 6th. Next month, on the 6th.”
Hearing Leon’s agreement, Emma beamed and waved goodbye.
“At 8 a.m., I’ll wait for you with Ellie under the big tree at the entrance of Redwood Avenue’s Treasure Blossom Manor. Don’t forget!”
“I won’t. See you then.”
After finalizing plans with Emma and watching her carriage disappear, Leon boarded his own. Pulling out his notebook, he carefully jotted down the new task.
To-Do List:
1. Observe Tom’s soul condition several times to check for Director Aquarius influence (currently normal).
2. Discuss luck issues with Chief (no solution yet; postponed).
3. Infiltrate The Scale of Gold gathering and level up Sacred Spirit badge to gold (Not sure about the exact time, but probably in around three weeks.).
4. Deliver hairs to Anna, inquire about the photo, confirm her orientation, and seek Chief’s help if needed (likely unrelated to orientation).
5. Investigate Princess case (stalled, but definitely linked to the cursed Director Aquarius. Damn him for meddling everywhere).
6. Emma’s daughter’s birthday (next month, 6th, 8 a.m., under the redwood tree at Treasure Blossom Manor, child named Ellie)
Hmm…these are the most important tasks.
Satisfied, Leon closed the notebook—but then hesitated. Picking up the charcoal pencil, he drew a large question mark beside the last item.
Prince Freckles said Emma was the last member of the Treasure Blossom family, yet she has a daughter. Did Chief secretly protect her? Or did the prince get it wrong?
Also, the entire Treasure Blossom family was executed…with a daughter to care for, no wonder Emma’s so cautious despite being immortal. She avoids risks like her life depends on it.
And though I don’t know what Emma originally wanted help with, it clearly wasn’t planning a birthday party. Keep an eye on that too.
…
“Number thirty-five, Shipbridge Street. We’ve arrived.”
Lost in thought while absentmindedly doodling circles in his notebook, Leon snapped back to reality as the carriage driver called out.
“Sir, time to disembark.”
“Oh, right.”
Leon tucked away his notebook, stepped out of the carriage, and looked toward Happiness Residence.
Snip. Snip.
“…”
Watching a burly old man wielding oversized pruning shears pop out of the garden bushes and glare menacingly, Leon’s lips twitched involuntarily. He gave the man a thumbs-up.
You’re something else, Grandpa. I just got here, and you’re already brandishing your shears at me. Seriously, twenty-four-seven surveillance?
But as Leon prepared to sidestep the old man and find Auntie Curly Hair to calm him down, two familiar heads popped out from behind the bushes.
“Big Brother?”
Seeing Leon, the kids lit up with joy, tiptoeing to grab onto the fence and waving enthusiastically.
Melanie, wearing a pretty little dress, shouted excitedly:
“Big Brother! Sister-in-law moved in! When are you marrying her?”
Sister-in-law…Princess Veronica?
Leon blinked, puzzled.
How do they know about this? And when did the princess move in? When I left, she was still at the Cleansing Bureau.
