Chapter 182: Family Feuds and the King of Nightmares
“Stop… stop hitting me…”
After enduring what could only be described as a brutal mixed-gender tag-team “rescue,” Joshua, the freckled prince who had been pummeled into a bruised pulp, blacked out, and came to again, finally collapsed. Wrapping his arms around his head like a turtle retreating into its shell, he whimpered in protest from his spot on the floor.
“I’m… I’m still a prince. The Cleansing Bureau has an agreement with the royal family to ensure our safety…”
“Prince Joshua, that's really an unfair thing for you to say.”
Leon shook out his wrist, which was starting to ache after the rather satisfying beatdown session. He marveled at the sheer audacity of this guy—getting his ass handed to him and still clinging to his princely status. With a perfectly straight face, Leon replied:
“We’re ensuring your safety right now, aren’t we? After all this saving, don’t you feel better? No more of that strange feeling of being controlled or influenced, right?”
“…”
That feeling never existed in the first place. I just wanted to understand what that dream meant.
Though inwardly seething enough to imagine tearing these two agents limb from limb, Joshua—the poor, freckled prince who’d just received the first proper beating of his life—was genuinely terrified now. He scrambled upright, keeping his rear end high in the air as he nodded furiously.
“Nope, no weird feelings anymore! I’ve never felt better in my life!”
Joshua might have been morally misaligned, but he wasn’t stupid. He understood the subtext behind Leon’s words perfectly well. Feeling better meant no more beatings. Claiming not to feel anything at all implied continued influence—and thus, further “rescuing” until he admitted otherwise.
Fine. Whatever makes you happy.
Seeing that the prickly brat had finally relented, Leon—who had indeed grown tired from all the saving—turned to the tall, elegant woman beside him and politely asked:
“Senior, do you want a few more swings at him?”
“No thanks. I’ve calmed down.”
Emma gave Leon a radiant smile before adding, almost casually:
“Oh, and before we leave, make sure to heal his injuries. Otherwise, when the investigators from headquarters show up, you’ll have some explaining to do.”
“Got it.”
Leon nodded, pulling out the [Plague-Infected Bandage]. Amidst Joshua’s frantic struggles and shrill protests, Leon forcibly pried apart the prince’s arms and wrapped the grimy strip of cloth around his head twice. As the stolen vitality from the kitchen chicken surged into the bandage, the swelling on Joshua’s face receded within seconds, revealing his original features once more.
Is it finally over?
Feeling the sudden absence of pain, Joshua tentatively touched his face. When he realized the swelling had completely disappeared, relief washed over him so intensely that tears nearly sprang to his eyes.
Last night’s nightmare, though devastating, had been confined to the realm of dreams—a buffer that dulled its emotional impact. The wrenching guilt and sorrow would fade once he woke up. But this beating? Oh, this was very real.
For someone who’d spent his entire life shielded from physical harm—aside from a few childhood scrapes—this level of violence was unprecedented. Even his father, the king, had only ever slapped him once… ah.
“Tsk, quit squirming!”
Before Joshua could process what was happening, Leon smacked him across the face again, sending him sprawling to the ground. Clutching his cheek in bewilderment, the prince stared up at Leon, who frowned in irritation.
“I accidentally healed too much earlier—I fixed that slap from yesterday along with your other injuries. But those were for different reasons, so I need to reapply it.”
Leon gestured impatiently. “Get up. Hands down. Stand still. If I mess it up again, I’ll have to start over.”
“All right, all right, that’s enough.”
Watching Joshua tremble with fear, hands lowered and eyes squeezed shut as he braced himself for another blow, Emma couldn’t help but shake her head. She stepped forward, hooking her arm through Leon’s and dragging him away from the room.
“What are you doing, Senior?”
“To save you from unnecessary trouble, obviously.”
Emma sighed, looking at Leon, who still seemed reluctant to let go.
“The chief specifically warned me about you before we came here. Honestly, Leon, even if we’ve concocted a decent excuse, this will definitely attract attention from headquarters’ investigators. Since he’s already admitted he’s fine, it’s time to stop. Continuing will only cause problems.”
“Relax, I’ve thought this through.”
Leon smirked, leaning back slightly as he explained:
“I may not remember much, but didn’t his sister mention she agreed to my proposal? That technically makes me his brother-in-law. A fight between two brother-in-laws? Two light slaps, no use of anomalous objects—it’s practically a family feud. Surely headquarters won’t bother meddling with something like that.”
You can do that?!
Emma blinked, caught between amusement and disbelief. “You really are something else… impressive.”
“I’m nothing compared to you, Senior.”
Leon paused, reflecting on Emma’s unshakable composure and razor-sharp decision-making during crises. His admiration was genuine.
“I might think outside the box, but when it comes to actual competence, I still have a lot to learn from you… Speaking of which, Senior, your soul fluctuated earlier. Did you discover something?”
“Enough with the Senior stuff—it makes me sound ancient. Just call me Emma. I’m not that much older than you.”
After correcting him, Emma smiled warmly.
“As for discoveries… yes, there is one. Have you heard of the King of Nightmares?”
“The King of Nightmares?”
“Also known as the Lord of Nightmares, the King of Nightmares governs the domain of nightmares within the broader spectrum of dream manipulation. It is one of the true gods worshipped by the Nightmare Cult. Its essence exists solely within the dreams of sentient beings, never crossing into reality, making it a particularly slippery adversary—even for headquarters.”
Emma paused, gathering her thoughts before continuing.
“Our kingdom’s royal lineage once fought against the King of Nightmares, driving it away multiple times—but not without consequences. Each direct descendant of the royal bloodline begins experiencing increasingly vivid and painful nightmares as they age. These dreams force them to relive their deepest regrets, growing more intense with each passing year. The current king fell ill under the weight of such torment.”
She glanced at Joshua, her expression softening slightly.
“If I’m correct, Prince Joshua likely endured one of those nightmares last night. That’s why he lost control earlier—desperate to understand the meaning behind it. To be honest, that’s also why I decided not to hold it against him initially. After facing such horrors, it’s natural for him to be emotionally unstable. He has his own burdens to bear.”
