Chapter 179: A Strange Dream (Part 1)
Under the trembling maid’s guidance, Emma entered the freckled prince’s room. Ignoring the chaos that looked like a storm had swept through, she politely greeted him with a warm smile.
“Long time no see. You’ve grown quite a bit since we last met.”
Hmm?
Hearing the tall, beautiful woman’s words, Prince Joshua raised an eyebrow in surprise. He studied her for a moment before hesitantly asking, “You’re… um… that woman who joined Cleansing Bureau six years ago?”
“Yes,” Emma replied softly, her expression gentle. With a graceful flick of her wrist, she sent a bandage-like object floating around the room to upright overturned furniture. Once everything was restored, she calmly explained their purpose.
“Prince Joshua, our Virgo Bureau received a request for help this morning regarding an assassination attempt on the royal family by rebels. We need your cooperation to answer a few questions.”
“As you know, one of our duties is to protect the royal family. However, due to long-standing manpower shortages, there have been occasional lapses. To better ensure your safety and that of your family, we hope you’ll assist us in this investigation.”
“Tch… Another one from the Cleansing Bureau…”
Joshua touched his swollen cheek, anger still simmering in his eyes. But seeing the strange, snake-like movements of Emma’s bandage, he restrained himself from saying anything too harsh, instead settling for a dissatisfied glare.
“You claim it’s your duty to protect the royal family? Then why do other kingdoms’ royals have members of your bureau stationed by their side, even powerful nobles get protection, while we’re left with nothing?”
“I hope you can understand our situation,” Emma responded calmly, her demeanor unwavering.
“Our branch faces unique challenges. Our staff numbers are only a fraction of what other branches have—sometimes even less. Add to that the frequent anomalies occurring within the kingdom recently, and our resources are stretched thin. It’s difficult to assign fixed personnel to guard the royal family.”
“However, our chief remains stationed in the capital at all times and uses anomalous artifacts to monitor the palace and surrounding areas closely. Unless it’s an extreme circumstance, you and your family’s safety is assured.”
“Hmph.”
Still unsatisfied, Joshua pressed further.
“In ordinary situations, who needs you? Isn’t the very existence of the Cleansing Bureau meant to handle extraordinary cases?”
“If I were in charge, during times of insufficient manpower, priority would be given to securing the royal family’s safety over dealing with miscellaneous anomalies elsewhere.”
“If something happens to the royal family, the entire kingdom would descend into chaos. As for anomalies in other counties, even if they escalate, it’s just commoners dying—it won’t cause much trouble. Delaying action wouldn’t hurt, right?”
“…”
After enduring Joshua’s tirade, Leon took a deep breath, his wrist twitching involuntarily.
Damn it, I really want to punch him right now.
Seriously… who raised this brat? How can someone be so infuriating? His sister has intuition as her talent; does he have 'provoking hatred' as his?
“Very well. I will relay your suggestions to our chief faithfully when I return.”
Emma didn’t show any irritation at Joshua’s accusations. She simply smiled warmly and gestured toward the sofa.
“Prince Joshua, are you available to answer our questions now?”
“Ask away.”
Pleased with Emma’s respectful attitude, Joshua sat down in the single-seat section of the sofa. Leon and Emma followed suit, sitting across from him.
“Wait, who are you?”
Looking at the man in the hooded robe and mask, seemingly trying to hide his identity, Joshua felt an inexplicable wave of disgust rise within him. He glared at Leon’s masked face and snapped, “She’s nobility and has the right to sit in my presence. Who are you? Coming in without a proper greeting and sitting across from me without a word? Has no one taught you manners?”
“…”
Are you suggesting I press my palm against your cheek to teach you some respect?
Leon, whose patience was wearing dangerously thin, clenched his jaw beneath the mask. He found himself laughing bitterly at the absurdity of the situation and reached up to remove his mask, ready to turn this inquiry into outright interrogation.
But just then, a soft, warm hand gently grasped his wrist, pulling him back. The hand rested lightly on his knee, signaling him to hold his temper.
“Prince Joshua, if you continue like this, you’ll put me in a difficult position.”
Emma’s voice remained serene, her smile unshakable despite facing someone as prickly as Joshua.
“He’s my colleague and somewhat of a junior under my guidance. He’s usually shy and not well-versed in royal etiquette. Please bear with him.”
“Moreover, he specializes in areas like souls, willpower, and mental phenomena—complementing my abilities. Should you encounter any minor issues in those areas in the future, he might prove helpful.”
“…”
After a brief hesitation, Joshua reluctantly retracted his metaphorical spikes. Leaning back against the sofa, he grumbled impatiently, “I’m busy later. Ask your questions quickly.”
“Very well. First question.”
Emma lightly patted Leon’s hand to calm him, then spoke in a voice as soft as clouds.
“Have you ever had private contact with members of the rebel faction?”
“What kind of idiotic question is that?”
Joshua frowned, his tone sharp. “Why would I associate with them? They’re trying to kill me. If I privately contacted them, wouldn’t that be asking for death?”
Surprisingly, he was telling the truth.
Watching Joshua’s steady soul flame, Leon discreetly extended his hand under the table. Through the smooth fabric of Emma’s dress, he lightly traced a checkmark on her thigh.
“Apologies, that was a routine question. Let’s move on to the next one.”
Emma’s leg instinctively twitched slightly at the touch but she maintained her composure, smiling faintly before continuing.
“Prince Joshua, how would you feel about having a sister who excels in every way and is the first in line for the throne?”
