Chapter 180: A Strange Dream (Part 2)
"What kind of strange question is that?"
Joshua frowned, visibly annoyed.
"I’m my father’s only son—what sister are you talking about? If you’re wasting my time just to ask this… um…"
He trailed off, as if something had suddenly occurred to him. His expression shifted to suspicion, and he glanced sharply at Leon.
"Are you… using some method to spy on me while I sleep? Did you see what I dreamed about?"
A dream?
At the mention of dreams, both Leon and Emma raised their eyebrows, exchanging a quick glance.
"Prince Joshua, while Cleansing Bureau does have agents capable of entering dreams, our Virgo Bureau doesn’t possess anyone with such abilities—at least not officially," Emma clarified. "However, we can’t guarantee that the rebels don’t have someone like that among them."
After silently exchanging opinions with Leon through subtle gestures, Emma straightened up, her tone growing serious.
"Prince Joshua, we suspect someone may have infiltrated your dreams in an attempt to harm or manipulate you. For your own safety, it’s crucial that you tell us everything you remember from your dream."
"Eh… It was just a chaotic, nonsensical dream. Do I really have to share that?"
"Yes, it could be vital information."
"Fine… alright…"
Intimidated by Emma’s stern demeanor, Joshua hesitated for a moment before reluctantly recounting his dream.
"It’s similar to your question. Last night, I had a dream where I wasn’t an only child—I had a sister who was about fourteen or fifteen years older than me. Her name was… uh… Ve… Ver-something…"
"Veronica?"
"Yeah! Veronica."
Joshua snapped his fingers, then paused, looking suspiciously at Leon, who had interjected.
"How do you know the name of the person in my dream? And why does your voice sound so familiar…?"
"We know the name because there’s a woman named Veronica among the rebels," Emma quickly cut in, giving Leon’s leg a discreet pinch under the table to silence him. She furrowed her brow slightly.
"Prince Joshua, we believe this woman might possess an anomalous object capable of invading dreams, and she used it to infiltrate yours."
"So that’s how it is…"
Joshua seemed to relax, nodding in understanding.
"That explains why the dream felt so strange. Everything was being controlled."
Strange?
Emma blinked, seizing the opportunity to press further.
"Prince Joshua, apart from having a sister, was there anything else unusual about the dream?"
"If you’re asking about strange things… the entire dream was bizarre."
Frowning as he recalled, Joshua spoke with evident distaste.
"In the rebel’s manipulation, I appeared utterly ridiculous in the dream.”
“From a young age, my father constantly compared me to her, telling me to emulate her in every way. My mother would remind me whenever she had the chance that my sister posed the greatest threat to my claim to the throne. She warned me not to trust any kindness Veronica showed me, claiming she’d harm me to secure the crown for herself.”
“Then… well… I acted stupidly in the dream.”
“Though we got along fairly well when we were younger—she even took me around the palace to play—but as I grew older, I started rebelling against everything she stood for. If she was simple, I became extravagant; if she was gentle, I turned harsh. Later, I kept causing trouble for her. And then…"
As he delved deeper into the memory, more details surfaced, and a flicker of pain crossed Joshua’s face. He continued, almost as though recounting his own life story.
"Later… the kingdom fell under attack. Enemy warships blockaded all major deep-water ports, and a quarter of the main roads were destroyed. More than half of the remaining routes were seized, cutting off nearly all transportation across half the kingdom. Airships rained explosives down daily.”
“The army, controlled by those incompetent fools in the military department, crumbled instantly before the enemy. Only a few new regiments led by my sister and the Minister of Defense managed to put up any resistance.”
“But they were vastly outnumbered and outgunned. Though Old Hill’s tactics repelled several attacks and stabilized the situation temporarily, I… my mother and some people from the Treasury kept undermining their efforts…"
Recalling his clownish behavior in the dream, Joshua struggled to continue. Slamming his fist on the table, he growled, "I didn’t do anything right.”
“Eventually, the new regiments couldn’t pay their soldiers, and supplies of ammunition and weapons ran out. Though my sister’s reputation barely held them together, they eventually collapsed. Most were trapped in Merino County.”
“Then the capital fell. Refugees flooded everywhere. My mother and I tried to escape with the Treasury officials but got separated. We didn’t make it out. And then… then my sister returned."
Joshua paused, his expression complicated.
"At that point, neither my father, mother, nor uncle came for me. But she fought her way out of the siege in Merino County, broke back into the capital, and found me hiding in an air-raid shelter converted from old city sewers.”
“When I asked her why she came, she said she didn’t want to, but I had to survive. Father only had two children, and I couldn’t die—I had to live, just in case."
"I didn’t understand what she meant at the time. But later, when Father died of illness during our escape and she was captured and executed after failing to resist, her scattered forces and those still loyal to the kingdom rallied around me, calling me the last robin of the royal family."
"But… the me in the dream was useless. I couldn’t resist like she did. All I could do was retreat repeatedly, surrendering completely to another kingdom. I signed humiliating treaties just to preserve a small patch of land covering less than three counties.”
“To avoid total annihilation, I had to pay massive tributes annually—precious minerals and nearly forty percent of our fiscal revenue. By then, the kingdom was reduced to little more than a large county in another realm. No matter how hard I worked every day, the situation only worsened…"
Finishing his account, Joshua’s gaze grew distant, as if reliving the suffering of his alternate self.
"Just as everything spiraled toward its worst outcome, with the entire kingdom impoverished and on the brink of collapse, an old man with perpetually smiling, squinty eyes appeared. He asked me if I wanted to change all of this.”
“He opened a door for me, saying I could step through to undo my regrets—but at the cost of losing everything. The me in the dream, whether out of despair or thinking I had nothing left to lose, walked straight in…"
"…"
"And then?"
After waiting a moment without hearing more, Emma leaned forward, captivated.
"What happened after you entered the door in the dream?"
"Afterward?"
Joshua blinked, his mind still adrift.
"There was no afterward. I woke up when dawn broke."
