Chapter 178: Evaluations and Visits
Even before the red-haired chief paused, Leon had already braced himself for bad news. But hearing his investigation results confirmed his worst fears—his heart sank like a stone tossed into icy water.
“Aren’t looking good… what exactly does that mean?” he asked hesitantly.
“It means exactly what it says,” the chief replied grimly, holding up the evaluation form. Though technically marked as "passed," the document was riddled with scathing remarks. She summarized: “It seems our bureau’s tarnished reputation has worked against you. While there’s no concrete evidence tying you to the Lion Blood Night, those two investigators still insist you’re highly suspicious—at the very least, complicit in Bobby Lion’s massacre.”
She paused, glancing at Leon before continuing. “They also claim your apparent mental stability is an act—a facade masking deeper, repressed thoughts. Despite showing little interest in wealth or power, they argue your compatibility with demonic artifacts suggests hidden, far more dangerous desires.”
The chief sighed and added, “Camus—the older investigator—even went so far as to suggest your worldview is skewed. He believes you fundamentally disdain regulations and harbor significant discontent with the current system. If given access to greater authority or powerful anomalous objects, he predicts you’d disregard Cleansing Bureau rules entirely, acting solely according to your own beliefs.”
“…”
Was this guy psychic or just overly paranoid?
Leon’s palms began to sweat as he listened to the eerily accurate assessment. It felt as though these investigators had dissected his mind and laid bare all its secrets. Had he really been that transparent during their brief meeting?
“Don’t panic too much,” the chief said, softening her tone. Sensing Leon’s distress, she tried to reassure him. “While the bureau values investigators’ opinions, we also prioritize hard evidence. These evaluations remain subjective views—not binding judgments.”
She leaned forward slightly. “Until they find tangible proof of malicious intent, this report won’t severely impact you. With my backing, accessing anomalous items won’t be affected either. However…” Her voice trailed off meaningfully. “Promotions will become nearly impossible. Unless you manage to change their perception, you might remain stuck as a Level Three Incident Responder for years.”
So… the only thing ruined here is my career prospects?
Relief washed over Leon. As long as they didn’t suspect him of orchestrating the Lion Blood Night, his future—or lack thereof—wasn’t worth losing sleep over. Still, appearances mattered, and Leon feigned indignation.
“How can baseless accusations destroy someone’s career? Doesn’t the bureau do anything about investigators slandering people like this?”
“There is one method…” The chief smirked faintly, recalling something amusing.
“When they come back next time to investigate you, make sure to harass them relentlessly. Better yet, get on their bad side—become enemies.”
“Huh?”
“That’s how most folks in our bureau handle it,” she explained casually. “Since those investigators already have biases against us, they’ll never write favorable reports anyway. So why not antagonize every single one who comes down? As long as they don’t catch you doing anything egregious, the credibility of their evaluations drops, minimizing the damage.”
Ah, so that’s how things work around here…
Leon stared blankly, speechless at the bizarre solution. No wonder every investigator seemed to despise their bureau—it was practically standard protocol.
“Emma and the others aren’t fans of constantly being scrutinized either,” the chief admitted. “Picking fights with investigators beats landing on observation lists every other week.”
She sighed, shaking her head. “I thought maybe you’d escape this nonsense, but apparently not. Forget about it for now. Go home, deliver that hair to your siblings, then head to the palace to visit Prince Joshua. See if he’s connected to this mess.”
“…”
“Why the silence again? Don’t tell me you’re avoiding meeting the prince?”
“Well…” Leon chuckled nervously. “It’s not that I don’t want to meet him—it’s more that I doubt he’ll want to see me…”
He quickly recounted yesterday’s events at Lion Manor, including the part where he humiliated the prince by slapping him in front of hundreds of guests—and spitting on his face. Turning to the unimpressed chief, he suggested, “Maybe I should wear a disguise? Use the black goat to observe covertly while someone else accompanies me?”
“Fine…”
Watching once-reliable Leon rapidly evolve into another troublemaker, the chief opened her mouth as if to say something but thought better of it. Instead, she massaged her temples and gestured toward the door.
“Go find Emma. She’s free right now; she can accompany you.”
“Got it.”
---
Crack!
The sound of shattering porcelain echoed through the room as an expensive vase was hurled violently against the wall, smashing into pieces like the fragile ego of its thrower.
“Aaargh!”
Joshua glared at his reflection in the mirror, his left cheek swollen and bearing the unmistakable imprint of a slap. Even the freckles dotting his face seemed to tremble with rage.
Bam!
Kicking over a beautifully carved red pine table, sending it crashing onto the carpet, the prince relived the humiliation of being slapped and spat upon in front of hundreds of guests. A primal scream tore from his throat.
“I’ll kill him! Kill him! That damn Duke of Lionheart, that bastard Leon Lion—I’ll tear him apart!”
Apparently, verbal threats weren’t enough. Grabbing a chair, Joshua hurled it at the door with all his might. The resounding crash flung the door wide open, revealing a trembling maid in the corridor—and behind her, a masked man accompanied by a woman exchanging curious glances.
What did you do yesterday? Why does he hate you this much?
Feeling the weight of Emma’s questioning gaze, Leon offered an awkward smile beneath his mask. Yesterday, he mused silently, I proposed to his sister. Maybe this guy’s hatred stems from some kind of sibling complex?
