Chapter 199: Oh My God! Monster!
Wang Ping was floating in the bathtub, scrubbing his fur under the showerhead to wash away the lingering metallic scent of blood. He paused when he overheard Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao’s conversation outside the door. After a moment of hesitation, he hastily wiped off the soap suds, scrambled out of the tub, and wrapped himself in a towel.
By the time he emerged from the bathroom, Gu Lang had just closed the door, holding a wolf tooth and muttering to himself. Seeing Wang Ping, Gu Lang brightened instantly, forgetting all about Yuan Xiaoxiao’s abrupt departure. He shoved the tooth into his pocket, stripped off his clothes, and headed toward the shower.
“That girl leaving so suddenly—did she get some kind of news?” Wang Ping muttered to himself. As soon as Gu Lang disappeared into the bathroom, Wang Ping tossed aside the towel, ignored Little Four whimpering anxiously on the bed, grabbed his tiny T-shirt from the floor, and dashed out the door.
Hearing the sound of the door opening, Gu Lang poked his head out of the bathroom, puzzled.
“That’s strange. Where’s Boss off to?”
---
Out in the hallway, Wang Ping found no trace of Yuan Xiaoxiao, but the faint aroma of shampoo still lingered in the air. Sniffing deeply, he followed the scent down the corridor. To his surprise, instead of heading outside, the trail led further along the first-floor hallway.
Eventually, Wang Ping stopped at one of the rooms. Recalling what the driver had said earlier—that the county guesthouse was the safest place around—he couldn’t help but chuckle. How convenient! Staying here by chance, only to stumble upon someone’s secret hideout?
He tried pushing open the neighboring room’s door, but it didn’t budge. Glancing around, his eyes landed on an open window at the end of the hall. With practiced ease, he leapt through the window and scaled the outer wall until he reached the room where Yuan Xiaoxiao was staying. Inside, thick curtains blocked the view, and the main window was shut tight. However, the single-pane bathroom window above featured a small exhaust fan.
Sighing at the thought of dirtying his freshly cleaned fur again, Wang Ping climbed up the brick seams of the wall and squeezed through the gaps between the fan blades, slipping quietly into the bathroom.
Once inside, he heard Yuan Xiaoxiao speaking in the adjacent room. Her tone suggested she was on the phone with someone.
Wang Ping hopped onto the tiled floor, grabbed a towel to cover himself, and began wiping away his paw prints as he crept toward the door. Peering through the crack, he saw Yuan Xiaoxiao sitting on the edge of the bed, clutching a satellite phone. Her expression was cold, her voice clipped.
“Are you sure they’re all dead?”
“I don’t want your guesses! Those bastards dared to kill me for the sake of taking credit! Find out whether they’re alive or dead—and if they’re not, track them down!”
“That’s none of your concern. I’ll handle it myself. Just do your job!”
Wang Ping scratched his head, utterly baffled. So… does this girl have ties to the group that stole the golden eagle?
Before he could ponder further, Yuan Xiaoxiao ended the call and tossed the phone onto the bed. Then, without hesitation, she unzipped her blue windbreaker.
“Hmm… should I close my eyes?” Wang Ping mused aloud, unable to tear his gaze away. Beneath the windbreaker, another layer of clothing came into view. When she removed the jacket completely, a black bulletproof vest was revealed underneath.
“Holy crap…” Wang Ping muttered silently. No wonder her figure always seemed odd—her arms and legs appeared slender, yet her torso looked disproportionately bulky. The thick vest explained everything.
But Wang Ping’s astonishment didn’t stop there. His eyes widened impossibly further as Yuan Xiaoxiao proceeded to peel off the vest. Then, gripping a spot on her scalp, she pulled—with surprising ease—an entire “scalp” off her head and tossed it casually onto the bed.
A cascade of short, dark hair tumbled down, framing her ears. Gone was the soft femininity; in its place was a wild, rugged charm.
She ruffled the strands atop her head, frowning slightly as she fiddled with something behind her ear. Pinching two thread-like objects, she gently tugged forward. A faint tearing sound accompanied the removal of a thin layer of artificial skin from her face.
As Wang Ping watched, dumbfounded, Yuan Xiaoxiao continued the process, peeling away her “facial mask.” His legs gave out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the cold tiles.
What followed was akin to a modern-day version of Painted Skin. Endless layers of intricate prosthetics—eyelid tapes as fine as hair, fake lips, synthetic nasal bones—all meticulously removed by Yuan Xiaoxiao. It was astonishing how she’d managed to keep up appearances while traveling with Gu Lang and Wang Ping for so long without raising suspicion.
When the transformation was complete, Yuan Xiaoxiao bore an entirely new face. Delicate features replaced her previous ordinary looks: a small, refined nose; thin, elegant lips; flawless skin. The plain woman from before vanished, revealing a stunningly beautiful stranger.
“Good grief! She’s a monster!” Wang Ping shuddered violently, goosebumps rising across his fur. His eyes strained painfully as sweat beaded on his forehead.
Just as Yuan Xiaoxiao reached for the waistband of her pants, Wang Ping quickly squeezed his eyes shut and pressed himself against the wall near the door. His heart pounded wildly, threatening to burst out of his chest.
To avoid any awkwardness, Wang Ping refrained from peeking further. Had he done so, he would’ve noticed that the skin exposed beneath her clothes was drastically different from the wheat-toned complexion of her arms and neck—it was almost unnaturally pale.
The sound of footsteps approaching the bathroom sent Wang Ping darting to the side of the door. Just as Yuan Xiaoxiao pushed it open and stepped inside, he slipped past her unnoticed, retreating quickly to avoid detection.
A short while later, the sound of running water filled the bathroom. It seemed that Yuan Xiaoxiao’s earlier damp hair had merely been a ruse—or perhaps she simply needed to wash again after removing her disguise.
Once the coast was clear, Wang Ping emerged from his hiding spot by the wall and began examining the room’s layout.
It was a simple, standard-issue guest room, with signs of neglect evident in the thin layer of dust covering parts of the furniture. Whether intentionally or not, Yuan Xiaoxiao had left only her own footprints on the otherwise undisturbed floor—no other traces remained.
“Hmm…”
Wang Ping stared at the trail of tiny paw prints leading from the bathroom door to behind the wall, shaking his head in exasperation. After some deliberation, he picked up one of Yuan Xiaoxiao’s discarded garments and tossed it over his tracks, effectively covering his presence.
Near the bed, he spotted a black travel bag pulled out from underneath. Its zipper was partially open, revealing various items inside—including, presumably, the satellite phone she’d used earlier.
Curious, Wang Ping leaned closer. Among the contents were several seemingly ordinary pieces of clothing, numerous cosmetic bottles, and a few wigs of varying colors. Prodding cautiously with his paw, he felt something resembling a handgun nestled within.
Stretching his neck to peer deeper, he spotted a holster—and tucked beneath it, a waterproof pouch containing what appeared to be passports. Seizing the opportunity while Yuan Xiaoxiao remained occupied in the shower, Wang Ping carefully extracted the pouch.
Flipping open one of the passports, he discovered it belonged to a foreign national—a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman who bore no resemblance whatsoever to Yuan Xiaoxiao, either pre- or post-transformation.
“Christina… What kind of name is that…” Wang Ping scratched his head, his furry face twisted in confusion. “Should I call the police?”
