Chapter 198: Arrival at Rutog County

Though the night had been filled with heart-stopping moments, Yuan Xiaoxiao slept more soundly than she had in days.

The wolves surrounded the campfire, lying or lounging in various states of rest. Many of them were bandaged up, though once the supplies ran out, Gu Lang resorted to tearing apart the tent lining and sleeping bags to dress their wounds.

One gray-blue wolf, now serving as an unwilling bed for two small creatures snoozing on its belly, grumbled under its breath—or perhaps muttered curses. After all, it wasn’t just injured; its sleep was being rudely interrupted by thunderous snoring. Driving off the black wolf pack came at a steep price: no rest for the weary.

But then, glancing over at another wolf cradled awkwardly in Yuan Xiaoxiao’s arms like a stuffed animal, its bewildered face glowing faintly in the dark, the gray-blue wolf couldn’t help but feel a twinge of schadenfreude. At least I’m not the unluckiest one here.

Meanwhile, the alpha wolf paced around the edges of the camp, deliberately avoiding the center. The reason wasn’t the fire—it was the source of the deafening snores. Not even the bravest among the pack dared approach that spot.

---

By morning, under the escort of the wolf pack, Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao packed up what little remained of their belongings and set off westward through the valley. By noon, after climbing a long slope, the wolves stopped at the summit.

From this vantage point, they looked down upon a vast plain stretching below. A massive lake, shimmering under the sunlight, spanned nearly ten kilometers across. To the south, a lengthy dam hugged the shoreline, behind which stood two stark white square structures.

Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao stood there for a long moment before realizing—they had finally left the wilderness behind and entered Rutog County.

Behind them, the wolves lingered just two meters away, watching silently. Wang Ping, now clad in a fresh black T-shirt, hopped off the gray-blue wolf and scurried over to Gu Lang’s side.

“Oh, so we’ve arrived.” Scratching his head, he turned back toward the wolves.

Coming to his senses, Gu Lang crouched down to bid farewell to the alpha wolf. “Thank you for guiding us safely. It’s time to say goodbye!”

Then, with a playful grin, he extended his hand. “How about we shake on it?”

The alpha wolf, wrapped in multiple bandages but otherwise unimpaired, looked at Gu Lang’s outstretched hand and then glanced instinctively at Wang Ping.

Wang Ping rolled his eyes internally. Why am I always the translator? I’m not even a wolf! He gestured vaguely with one paw, mimicking the motion of extending a limb. Understanding dawned on the wolf, who lifted its front paw into Gu Lang’s hand.

“Haha, you’re so smart! Just like my Dahei! Maybe someday I’ll bring him to meet you!”

Gu Lang beamed, completely oblivious to how absurd the idea sounded. Wang Ping groaned inwardly. Forget whether Dahei would even survive meeting a wolf—if Gu Lang dared bring that dog to Tibet, not even his grandmother could save him from getting his legs broken.

Before Gu Lang could ramble further, Yuan Xiaoxiao gently nudged him aside. Unlike her companion, she didn’t bother with words. Instead, she quietly embraced the alpha wolf’s neck, savoring the moment.

Wang Ping scratched his head nervously, glancing at the gray-blue wolf. “Uh, should we hug too?”

The wolf responded with a low growl, promptly retreating deeper into the pack.

With a deep breath, Yuan Xiaoxiao released the alpha wolf and turned away without looking back, striding forward with quiet determination.

Wang Ping and Gu Lang exchanged shrugs, waved goodbye to the wolves, and hurried after her.

About a hundred meters later, a chorus of howls erupted behind them. Turning back, they saw the entire pack standing atop the hill, bidding them farewell. With a final glance, the wolves followed their leader, vanishing over the horizon.

“Awooo~”

Little Four, nestled in Yuan Xiaoxiao’s backpack, joined in with its own tiny howl, clearly inspired by the commotion outside.

“Hmm… Now that I think about it, maybe Little Four is related to the alpha wolf—they do look kind of alike. Guess I’ll take it along…”

As Gu Lang mused aloud, he absentmindedly kicked something—only to realize it was Wang Ping, who’d been standing right beside him. Already struggling to keep balance on the slope, Wang Ping tumbled forward, rolling downhill in a chaotic heap.

“Ow~ Σ⊙▃⊙川”

Gu Lang stared dumbfounded for nearly five seconds before sprinting after him.

“Boss…”

Yuan Xiaoxiao watched the scene unfold, shoulders shaking with barely contained laughter. This might have been the most genuine laugh she’d shared since meeting these two.

---

By 4 PM, their faces bearing matching miniature handprints, Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao hitched a ride in the back of a pickup truck heading to Rutog County, roughly a hundred kilometers away.

Originally a hydrological monitoring station, the staff were astonished to see travelers emerge from the uninhabited region. They offered the pair lodging for the night, promising transport to town the next day. But Gu Lang, eager for a hotel shower and a hearty meal, sweetened the deal by offering to fill the driver’s gas tank—and persuaded him to leave early.

Just before sunset, nearly two weeks of hardship culminated in a triumphant arrival. Including his week-long recovery in Lhasa, Gu Lang’s Tibetan adventure had stretched over twenty days—pushing dangerously close to Chen Bai’s deadline.

The truck traveled south along the Yezi Highway, stopping first at an Agricultural Bank ATM for cash, then at a nearby gas station to refuel. Finally, the enthusiastic driver dropped them off at the county guesthouse.

“The hotels around here may look fancy,” he advised, “but trust me, they’re mostly tourist traps. For safety and comfort, nothing beats the guesthouse.”

After thanking him profusely, Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao wasted no time checking in. Two standard rooms booked, they retreated immediately to shower and change.

On the way, Gu Lang had already scoped out a restaurant, planning to treat everyone to dinner post-shower.

However, inside his room, Gu Lang found himself sitting on the bed, watching Little Four frolic gleefully while the sound of running water echoed from the bathroom. In its excitement over a hot shower, it’d forgotten Wang Ping’s penchant for lengthy baths. Until the honey badger emerged, Gu Lang wouldn’t get his turn.

“Boss, are you done yet? It’s been ten minutes…”

Finally unable to wait any longer, Gu Lang called out—but just as he did, a knock sounded at the door.

“Who is it?”

Opening the door, Gu Lang was surprised to find Yuan Xiaoxiao standing there. Her damp hair hung loose behind her, carrying the faint scent of shampoo, her expression as cool and composed as ever.

“Oh, you’re already done? Hold on a sec; Boss hasn’t finished yet…” Gu Lang chuckled.

“No need!”

Yuan Xiaoxiao cut him off, tossing her backpack onto the floor and pulling a pristine wolf tooth from her pocket. Holding it out, she said, “I’ve got somewhere to be. Consider this a parting gift.”

“Leaving already? So soon? Let’s grab dinner together!” Gu Lang blurted, accepting the tooth automatically. “What’s this?”

“It’s the black alpha wolf’s fang—I pulled it out. Keep it as a souvenir. As for dinner… maybe next time. Farewell!”

Without hesitation, Yuan Xiaoxiao turned and walked away.

“Hey, wait!”

Gu Lang scrambled to retrieve something from her returned backpack—a familiar paratrooper knife. Handing it to her, he grinned. “Here! You seemed fond of it. A token of appreciation.”

After a brief pause, Yuan Xiaoxiao accepted the knife and headed toward the stairs.

“Wait! Where are you going? Should I call a car for you? Do you have enough money? Hey, let’s exchange WeChat IDs!”

Gu Lang’s voice trailed after her, but Yuan Xiaoxiao never turned around. Raising an arm in a casual wave, she disappeared around the corner, leaving only silence in her wake.
