Chapter 197: Pleasant Cooperation!

“If I go up there to help now, will the alpha wolf get mad?”

Wang Ping scratched his head, then suddenly remembered that his paw had just been pulled out of some unfortunate wolf's nostril. He hastily dropped his arm back down.

At this moment, though the battlefield seemed chaotic, the situation hadn’t improved much.
The black wolf pack had been fighting for a while, while the white wolves led by the alpha were fresh reinforcements. However, they’d run several kilometers to get here and weren’t in peak condition. Moreover, the white wolf pack only numbered about twenty—less than half of the opposing side.

So while they’d initially gained an advantage upon arrival, they were now gradually falling behind.

Wang Ping watched as the gray-blue wolf that had saved him earlier was now surrounded by three equally large black wolves. Blood already stained its light-colored fur, and one of the black wolves had sunk its teeth into its tail, pulling it backward.

“Grrr!”

Wang Ping shouted, leaping toward the black wolf gnawing on the gray-blue wolf’s tail. With a swift motion, he thrust his claws into its belly and yanked them forward with brutal force.

Splat!

A mass of unidentifiable gore spilled onto the ground. The black wolf’s eyes dimmed, and after retreating a couple of steps, it collapsed.

The pressure on the gray-blue wolf eased. It lunged forward, sinking its teeth into one of the remaining black wolves’ necks. Just as another black wolf moved to bite its throat, a blood-red blur jumped from beneath the gray-blue wolf. A small claw swung upward, slicing cleanly from the black wolf’s jaw all the way down to its chest.

In terms of sheer presence, any random wolf on the battlefield probably looked more intimidating than Wang Ping. But when it came to ruthlessness, even Yuan Xiaoxiao couldn’t match him—though Gu Lang, who’d accidentally beaned Wang Ping with a rock earlier, was a special case.

With Wang Ping’s assistance, the three black wolves attacking the gray-blue wolf fell in quick succession, their bodies lying limp, gasping for breath but clearly dying. Nearby, the two alpha wolves roared at each other before crashing together once again, their black-and-white forms rolling and tearing at each other amidst the chaos.

On top of the weathered rock, Yuan Xiaoxiao suddenly opened her jacket, pulling out Little Four, who’d been whining softly, and shoving it into Gu Lang’s arms. She then unslung her backpack, dropping it at Gu Lang’s feet, and began climbing down.

“What are you doing?” Gu Lang called out urgently.

“I’m going to help!” Yuan Xiaoxiao replied curtly, her face expressionless. After descending partway, she let go and dropped to the ground, heading straight for the corpse of a wolf pierced by the paratrooper knife.

“Don’t be ridiculous! Get back up here!” Gu Lang shouted, clutching Little Four tightly. “If you’re not throwing rocks from above, how dangerous do you think it’ll be down there?”

Yuan Xiaoxiao ignored him, her face cold and unreadable.

Her mind was in turmoil. Normally, she would’ve stayed safely atop the rocks until every last wolf below was dead. But seeing the outnumbered white wolves injured and struggling stirred something deep within her—a fiery rage she couldn’t suppress.

She rummaged through the corpses of several wolves until she found what she was looking for: the handle of the paratrooper knife embedded in the eye socket of a black wolf crushed beneath another body.

Several nearby wolves noticed Yuan Xiaoxiao descending but hesitated to attack, as white wolves kept intercepting them whenever they tried to pounce. Pulling the short-bladed knife free, she gripped it firmly in her hand, narrowing her eyes as she surveyed the chaotic battlefield.

To her left, Wang Ping worked alongside the gray-blue wolf, systematically taking down black wolves one by one. In the center, the duel between the two alphas had reached a fever pitch. The white wolf king’s wounds were multiplying visibly, while the black wolf king’s dark fur concealed most injuries—but judging by the crimson-streaked muzzle of the white wolf, neither combatant was faring well.

After a moment’s thought, Yuan Xiaoxiao didn’t head toward the beleaguered group of white wolves on the right. Instead, she turned and ran toward Wang Ping’s position.

Though skilled, she knew she wasn’t strong enough to take on the wolves alone. Her strategy was simple: reinforce the stronger side to tip the scales faster. Winning a favorable fight was always easier—and more efficient—than trying to turn around a losing battle.

On Wang Ping’s end, he’d just yanked his claws out of a black wolf’s throat when he saw the gray-blue wolf get pinned down by two others. Before he could intervene, a stone flew past him, striking one of the attackers squarely in the skull. Yuan Xiaoxiao charged in next, stomping down on the stunned wolf’s snout with her hiking boot while driving the blade repeatedly into its neck. Blood sprayed across her face, but she didn’t flinch.

“Damn, this girl doesn’t hold back!” Wang Ping muttered under his breath.

With Yuan Xiaoxiao joining forces with Wang Ping, the western flank of the battlefield quickly became a rout. More and more white wolves broke free from their opponents and joined the growing tide of victory. Once the last black wolf fell, the gray-blue wolf let out a triumphant howl, scooping up Wang Ping (who’d latched onto its leg) and charging eastward toward the ongoing skirmish.

Perhaps sensing his numbers dwindling, the black wolf king started showing signs of hesitation. When Wang Ping’s group ended their fight and surged toward the other side, the black wolf king’s attention wavered, his gaze flickering involuntarily toward the east.

“Roar!”

In that split second, the white wolf king lunged forward, sinking his teeth deep into the black wolf king’s neck.

“Awoooooo~”

As the haunting howl echoed across the battlefield, the noise gradually subsided. The surviving wolves stopped fighting, separating into two distinct groups as they turned their attention to the center of the field.

The blood-soaked white wolf king stood tall, letting out a long, mournful howl toward the sky. Beneath him, the lifeless body of the black wolf king lay still, unnoticed until now.

“Whine... wheeze…”

The remaining black wolves stirred uneasily. One near the back tucked its tail between its legs and bolted. Then another, and another. Soon, waves of black wolves were fleeing en masse back toward Wolf Mountain. Within moments, the battlefield was deserted except for the victorious white wolves, who raised their voices in unison, howling triumphantly at the moonlit sky.

“Phew…” Yuan Xiaoxiao exhaled deeply, collapsing gracelessly onto the ground. She tossed aside the blood-slick paratrooper knife and flexed her numb fingers.

Nearby, Wang Ping—equally drenched in gore—waddled over on his stubby legs. Tilting his head, he studied her silently. Yuan Xiaoxiao tensed, wary of his intentions. To her surprise, he extended his tiny, bloodied paw toward her.

“What does this mean?” she asked cautiously.

After a moment’s hesitation, she lifted her hand, palm facing him.

Smack! His damp little paw slapped against hers.

“Pleasant cooperation!” Wang Ping grinned widely, his bloody face contorted into an odd but strangely endearing expression. For some inexplicable reason, Yuan Xiaoxiao found herself thinking—for the first time—that he actually looked kind of cute.

Thud! The sound of something heavy hitting the ground interrupted both Yuan Xiaoxiao’s thoughts and the wolves’ collective howls. Dozens of glowing eyes turned southward, where a certain streamer was rubbing his sore butt after landing awkwardly. From his pocket peeked Little Four, squealing indignantly, likely bruised from the fall.

Yuan Xiaoxiao sighed, overcome by a swirl of emotions—laughter bubbling up alongside tears threatening to spill over.
