Chapter 196: The Alpha Comes to Rescue!
A flash of cold steel sliced through the air, narrowly missing Gu Lang’s scalp before burying itself in the eye of the leaping wolf.
Thud!
The wolf’s lifeless body slammed into Gu Lang’s leg before collapsing to the ground.
“Holy crap!”
Gu Lang yelped, instinctively grabbing Yuan Xiaoxiao's outstretched arm with both hands, nearly pulling her off balance. She clung desperately to the edge of the rock, her teeth clenched and face flushed red with effort. If she could have kicked him in his screaming face without falling, she probably would have.
More wolves surged forward, their jaws snapping at Gu Lang’s dangling legs. He screamed again, curling his feet up onto the rock ledge until he was clinging to Yuan Xiaoxiao like a terrified shrimp. Below him, the wolves howled and leapt, each jump prompting another shriek from Gu Lang.
“For fuck’s sake!” Yuan Xiaoxiao spat, her arms burning with pain as she struggled to hold on. “Just get up here already!”
“Pull me up, quick!” Gu Lang shouted back, oblivious to her curses.
Another long, mournful howl echoed from behind the pack. The wolves paused momentarily before several lined up side by side beneath the cliff. Others used their backs as stepping stones, launching themselves upward.
“Hurry up! They’re coming!” Gu Lang wailed, spotting a wolf leap toward his rear end just as an enraged roar erupted below.
“Awooo!”
Wang Ping, his white fur streaked with blood, lunged forward and grabbed the hind leg of the airborne wolf, yanking it down violently. As the wolf twisted to bite him, Wang Ping swung it like a club, smashing it into the line of wolves below. Bodies tumbled, but more surged forward, snarling and snapping.
Adrenaline coursed through Wang Ping’s veins, igniting every fiber of his being. With a ferocious growl, he charged head-on, sinking his sharp claws deep into the throat of one wolf. It collapsed with a whimper, but two others immediately latched onto his body.
“Boss!”
Gu Lang cried out from above, panic fueling a sudden burst of strength. Pushing off the rock ledge, he scrambled upward, finally allowing Yuan Xiaoxiao to haul him onto the ledge.
Below, the fabric of Wang Ping’s windbreaker tore apart under the wolves’ relentless bites, leaving only shreds behind. But Wang Ping was unfazed. Pulling his claws free from the fallen wolf’s neck, he folded his body impossibly flat, driving them straight into the eye of another wolf gnawing at his thigh.
“Augh!”
The wounded wolf thrashed wildly, dragging Wang Ping down with it. Blood spurted everywhere as they rolled across the ground. Before Wang Ping could recover, another set of jaws snapped shut inches from his face.
Bam!
A flying stone struck the attacking wolf square on the nose, eliciting a pained yelp as its muzzle crumpled under the impact.
Wang Ping glanced up to see Gu Lang now perched on the ledge beside Yuan Xiaoxiao, frantically motioning for him to climb up. Nearby, Yuan Xiaoxiao continued dismantling chunks of the unstable weathered rock, hurling them at the encroaching wolves with deadly precision.
But despite their efforts, more wolves arrived below, forming what could only be described as a living ladder—wolves climbing atop each other to scale the cliff.
“Awooo!”
The urgent howls from the rear grew louder and more insistent.
“To take down an army, you must first capture its leader! I’ll go after the alpha!”
With that, Wang Ping turned and charged headlong into the fray, racing toward the direction of the black alpha.
Above, Gu Lang watched Yuan Xiaoxiao rain rocks down on the wolves, knocking several off their feet. Inspired, he mimicked her actions, prying loose a crumbling chunk of rock. Turning around, he spotted Wang Ping grappling with a wolf—and, aiming carefully, hurled the rock with all his might.
Crack!
The projectile struck Wang Ping squarely on the head, sending him sprawling to the ground. The wolf poised to attack froze mid-bite, confusion evident on its face.
“Uh…”
Gu Lang winced, avoiding Yuan Xiaoxiao’s incredulous glare. “Accident! Totally an accident…”
Yuan Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes, silently cursing. If that vengeful honey badger thinks I threw that rock later, what am I supposed to do?
Shaking his head groggily, Wang Ping staggered to his feet—just in time to meet another wolf’s snapping jaws. Instinctively raising his claws to block, he felt a searing pain as yet another wolf sank its teeth into his back, lifting him off the ground. Within moments, more wolves piled on, tearing and biting mercilessly.
Meanwhile, Yuan Xiaoxiao had no time to worry about Wang Ping. Seeing the “wolf ladder” almost reaching their ledge, she pulled Gu Lang closer, urging him to keep throwing rocks downward.
Between throws, Gu Lang sobbed hysterically. “Boss, I’m so sorry!”
“Damn it!”
Wang Ping roared, pinned under three sets of snapping jaws. Hearing Gu Lang’s cries, his rage boiled over. “You useless idiot, you’ve screwed me again!”
But suddenly, Wang Ping’s ears twitched. From the eastern valley, a familiar howl rose faintly in the distance.
“Awooo!”
At the same moment, the black alpha let out a long, commanding howl. Both Yuan Xiaoxiao and Gu Lang watched in astonishment as the wolves below abruptly halted their assault, scattering like water and retreating toward the source of the sound. Simultaneously, a cacophony of growls and chaotic pawsteps approached rapidly from the east.
Before the remaining wolves could fully retreat, sleek gray-and-white figures shimmering silver under the moonlight burst into view, crashing violently into the black wolves. Chaos erupted below—howls filled the air as wolves tangled together, rolling and biting in bloody combat.
Mouth agape, Gu Lang stared blankly at the carnage below, too stunned to notice when a falling rock hit his foot.
“Hah!”
Yuan Xiaoxiao grinned triumphantly. “It’s the alpha coming to save us!”
The three wolves still gripping Wang Ping hesitated, torn between finishing him off and confronting the unexpected reinforcements. In that split second, a massive gray-blue wolf lunged from the side, sinking its teeth into the neck of one black wolf.
“Grrr!”
The bitten wolf roared in agony, twisting its bleeding neck to retaliate. The two rolled together in a frenzied struggle.
Freeing one arm, Wang Ping drove his claws into the nose of another nearby wolf. Yelping in pain, it released his other arm and retreated. Using the brief reprieve, Wang Ping plunged both claws into the eyes of the wolf beneath him.
Now free, Wang Ping finally dropped to the ground. Nearby, the gray-blue wolf had just finished off its opponent. Bloodied but still standing, Wang Ping raised a claw toward his ally.
“Ha! We meet again, buddy! What are the odds?”
“Grrr.”
The other wolf glared at him briefly before turning to join the fight against the remaining black wolves.
At that moment, two figures tumbled out of the bushes to the north, locked in a fierce struggle. One was a near-black wolf, larger than average, its teeth dripping with blood. The other was none other than the white alpha they’d encountered earlier that day.
Both alphas rose to their feet, growling low as they circled each other. Around them, the battlefield raged, but not a single wolf dared interfere in this duel between kings.
