Chapter 195: A Desperate Escape
Without warning, without a single word exchanged, Gu Lang froze for less than two seconds under the watchful eyes of Wang Ping and Yuan Xiaoxiao. Then, as if someone flipped a switch, "The Senseless Gu" mode activated. With an expressionless face, he turned on his heels and bolted.
“Damn it, I knew this would happen!”
A wave of helplessness washed over Wang Ping, erasing any thought of stalling for time. He gave Yuan Xiaoxiao, who was still frozen in shock, a swift kick before leaping onto Gu Lang’s leg as he sprinted past. Together, they dashed southward toward the rolling hills.
A long, mournful howl erupted from the forest, and in an instant, the pack surged forward like a dark tide beneath the moonlight. The wolves moved with deadly precision, their glowing eyes reflecting both hunger and menace.
To be honest, the wolves wouldn’t have charged so quickly if Gu Lang hadn’t bolted first. Wolves are creatures that seize opportunities—once they sense weakness, they attack. And the faster their prey runs, the harder they pursue.
As Gu Lang sprinted past Yuan Xiaoxiao, he didn’t even glance at her or the abandoned luggage. In one fluid motion, he vaulted over obstacles, his legs moving like the wind as he raced toward the rocky terrain ahead.
“Fuck!”
Yuan Xiaoxiao cursed under her breath, snatching up the remaining dead rabbit. She hurled it at the advancing pack, then took off after Gu Lang. As she ran, she unzipped her jacket and shoved Little Four inside for safekeeping.
“Grrr!”
“Roar!”
The wolves burst across the open ground, splitting around the remnants of the campfire. They ignored the thrown rabbit entirely, their growls growing louder as they closed in on the fleeing duo.
Hanging onto Gu Lang’s leg, Wang Ping glanced back. Far behind the pack, a near-black wolf emerged from the shadows. It paused briefly to let out a piercing howl, signaling the others. The pack shifted tactics, focusing more heavily on Yuan Xiaoxiao, who lagged slightly behind.
Hearing the snarls drawing closer, Yuan Xiaoxiao stumbled through a thicket and glanced back instinctively. Her frustration boiled over when she realized what was happening.
“Damn it! Why chase me instead of that big guy? Do I look easier to take down?!”
She pushed herself harder, glancing ahead at Gu Lang. But the more she watched him, the wider her jaw dropped—and nearly tripped over her own feet in disbelief.
Gu Lang moved with breathtaking agility, clearing obstacle after obstacle without hesitation. One moment, he was leaping sideways over a chest-high bush; the next, he was scaling rocks with the grace of a seasoned parkour athlete. His focused expression made him look like some kind of elite spy straight out of an action movie.
Yuan Xiaoxiao’s mind reeled. Wasn’t this supposed to be the same clumsy newbie who couldn’t even beat a honey badger? Now here he was, moving like a trained mercenary!
Just as she processed this revelation, Yuan Xiaoxiao’s foot caught on a loose stone, sending her stumbling. Sensing her vulnerability, the nearest wolf lunged.
“Shit!”
Reacting quickly, Yuan Xiaoxiao braced herself against the ground and rolled forward, simultaneously grabbing the offending rock. With a flick of her wrist, she hurled it at the charging wolf. The stone struck its target dead-center—an eye—eliciting a muffled thud followed by a spray of blood. The wolf whimpered, now sporting a bloody socket where its glowing orb once gleamed.
Without looking back, Yuan Xiaoxiao scrambled to her feet and resumed running.
“Nice shot!”
Wang Ping cheered from his perch on Gu Lang’s leg. But just as the words left his mouth, he felt Gu Lang suddenly accelerate.
Looking ahead, Wang Ping saw that Gu Lang had reached the edge of a weathered cliff overlooking a rugged landscape dotted with jagged rocks. Between them and the distant snowcapped peaks lay miles of uneven terrain covered in sparse vegetation and exposed boulders.
Gu Lang didn’t slow down. Instead, he launched himself toward a ledge about four meters high, arms reaching for purchase—
“What the—when did The Senseless Gu get so agile?”
The thought had barely crossed Wang Ping’s mind when he saw Gu Lang leap into the air, his hands reaching for the ledge. But just shy of twenty centimeters from the edge, his arms froze mid-grab, flailing uselessly before gravity took over.
“Thud!”
Gu Lang collapsed with Wang Ping holding his leg at the base of the weathered cliff, groaning in pain.
Wang Ping: ……
Yuan Xiaoxiao: ……
“Uh… ow…”
Gu Lang sat up slowly, rubbing his head and backside, his expression utterly bewildered as he stared blankly at the rock face in front of him.
“Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?”
“Stop spacing out and get up there!” Yuan Xiaoxiao shouted as she sprinted past him. With a burst of speed, she leapt gracefully onto the rock face, using her momentum to push off with one foot. In a move far more fluid and confident than Gu Lang’s earlier attempt, she grabbed the ledge he’d failed to reach and hauled herself up with ease.
“Damn, it’s higher than it looks…”
Gu Lang hesitated, glancing nervously over his shoulder at the wolves now perilously close. His legs immediately went limp, trembling like jelly as he slumped back to the ground, unable to stand.
“For crying out loud! You’re worse than useless right now!” Wang Ping muttered under his breath, frustration boiling over. There was no time to waste. Steeling himself, he turned to face the nearest wolf charging toward them.
“Grrr!”
The wolf lunged, its teeth gleaming menacingly in the moonlight. Wang Ping met it head-on, his small frame belying the ferocity in his eyes.
“Grrr!”
The lead wolf lunged, its fangs glinting menacingly in the moonlight. At the last second, Wang Ping launched himself into the air, twisting mid-flight to deliver a powerful swipe directly to the wolf’s face.
“Bang!”
The force of Wang Ping’s strike was astonishing. The wolf that had lunged at him let out a piercing yelp as it was sent tumbling backward, crashing to the ground in a heap. It lay there for several seconds, unable to rise, its face now a bloody mess.
From her perch on the first ledge of the rocky outcrop, Yuan Xiaoxiao heard the commotion and glanced back. Seeing Gu Lang still sitting helplessly below, she felt a surge of exasperation. Just moments ago, she’d thought he was some kind of hidden powerhouse, but one fall later, and his incompetence was glaringly obvious.
With one hand gripping the sharp edge of the rock above her and the other extended downward, Yuan Xiaoxiao shouted to him, “Grab my hand and get up here!”
“I… I…” Gu Lang looked up at her, tears welling in his eyes as he sat there, trembling. “My legs feel like jelly—I can’t stand up!”
“You—!”
Yuan Xiaoxiao was on the verge of losing her temper entirely when Little Four, who had been stuffed inside her jacket, suddenly woke up from all the jostling. The tiny creature began wriggling and squealing frantically, adding another layer of chaos to the already tense situation. Yuan Xiaoxiao gritted her teeth, trying desperately to keep her focus amidst the mounting frustration.
Meanwhile, more wolves poured forward, their snarls growing louder with each passing second. At first, Wang Ping managed to fend them off, swatting away any that came too close. But his small stature and shorter reach quickly became a disadvantage. After only two brief exchanges, the wolves seemed to realize they could bypass him altogether. With a renewed chorus of howls echoing behind them, the pack split up, surging toward the base of the weathered cliff where Gu Lang remained vulnerable.
Wang Ping scrambled to keep up, his movements becoming increasingly frantic as he retreated. Just as one wolf broke away from the group, circling around Wang Ping to charge directly at Gu Lang, a spinning rock struck it squarely on the side of its head.
Perched precariously on the narrow ledge, Yuan Xiaoxiao fumbled for any loose stones within reach, hurling them down with precision to slow the advancing wolves. Each throw bought them precious seconds, but the supply of rocks wouldn’t last forever.
“Damn it! If only I still had my gun!” she cursed under her breath, feeling utterly humiliated by how disheveled and desperate this whole ordeal had made her. Never in her career had she felt so powerless.
At that moment, Gu Lang finally seemed to regain some semblance of composure. Though his legs still wobbled, he managed to pull himself upright using the jagged surface of the rock wall. Slowly, shakily, he reached upward, attempting to climb.
Spotting a nearby wolf closing in, Yuan Xiaoxiao hurled her last stone with pinpoint accuracy. Without wasting a second, she turned her attention back to Gu Lang, reaching down once again to help him up. But just as she did, another wolf leapt out from the opposite side, its jaws snapping viciously toward Gu Lang’s leg.
