Wang Ping returned empty-handed, having failed to catch any prey. To make matters worse, he had drained the last of the drone’s battery in the process.
Truth be told, if he’d spent more time combing through the low hills, he might have stumbled upon a hare or two. After all, it didn’t make sense for an entire mountainside of protected species to survive solely by eating one another. Where there were rare creatures, there were bound to be less precious ones lurking as well. But Wang Ping wasn’t willing to risk leaving Yuan Xiaoxiao and Gu Lang alone together for too long. Despite Yuan Xiaoxiao's seemingly calm demeanor—aside from that one questionable car incident—her true intentions remained a mystery. Wang Ping couldn’t shake the paranoia that if he delayed his return, he’d find both Gu Lang and Little Four in some unrecognizable heap.
While Wang Ping came back with nothing but dead batteries, Yuan Xiaoxiao struck gold during her wood-gathering excursion. She discovered a patch of wild strawberries nestled deep within the forest. Using her jacket hood as an impromptu basket, she brought back a generous haul. At least they’d get some vitamins out of the deal.
The night passed without incident. The next morning, the group rose early and resumed their journey as usual.
After a day of adjustment, Gu Lang no longer resisted getting up quite so much. However, the soreness in his thighs persisted, forcing him into an awkward waddle as he walked.
But just like the previous day, barely five hundred meters into their trek, another dead animal lay sprawled across their path. Even Gu Lang, oblivious as he often was, couldn’t ignore the unsettling pattern anymore.
This time, the creature was unmistakable—a musk deer, the very same protected species Wang Ping had encountered on the hillside the day before. Its protected status hadn’t spared it from its grim fate. Somehow, despite its wanderings, it had ended up right back in front of Wang Ping.
The placement was eerily identical: the same clean ground, free of even a single blade of grass, and the same precise wound patterns.
Yuan Xiaoxiao crouched down to examine the carcass, her brow furrowed. This time, she didn’t offer any commentary, merely exchanging a meaningful glance with Wang Ping.
Behind her, Gu Lang suddenly whipped out his phone, powered it on, and sent a voice call request to Chen Bai via WeChat.
The call rang several times before Chen Bai finally picked up, his voice groggy with sleep. “Hello? Gu Lang? What’s up this early—”
“Chen!” Gu Lang exploded, his tone laced with fury. “You’ve gone too far!”
“What?” Chen Bai sounded confused, rustling noises suggesting he was scrambling out of bed. After a beat, he replied, “What are you talking about?”
“What am I talking about?” Gu Lang spat. “Do you think I’m some softie who can’t handle hardship? Did you really fake all this just to mess with me?”
Gu Lang’s anger seemed genuine, but his accusations made little sense.
“Are you insane?” Chen Bai snapped, still half-asleep and clearly irritated. “What are you going on about? What did I fake?”
“You tell me,” Gu Lang shot back. “If you didn’t fake anything, why do I keep finding dead animals on my route? Do you think I’m stupid?”
Chen Bai paused longer this time, his silence heavy under the watchful eyes of Yuan Xiaoxiao and Wang Ping. Then, his voice erupted through the phone, sharp and loud.
“I don’t think you’re stupid—I know you are!” Chen Bai bellowed. “Do you seriously believe you’re Bear Grylls or something? That I’d stage fake kills using protected animals? Get real!”
Unaware of what Gu Lang had encountered that morning, Chen Bai fumed silently. If anyone accused him of slaughtering endangered species, his boss would have his head on a platter.
Back in the livestream chat, viewers were baffled. While Gu Lang’s logic was certainly… creative, the repeated appearance of dead animals only deepened their curiosity. Once could be chalked up to coincidence, but twice? No way.
Just then, Yuan Xiaoxiao spoke up, her expression lighting up with realization. “I see now.”
Everyone turned to her, including Chen Bai on the other end of the line. The live audience leaned forward, eager for her explanation.
“Here,” Yuan Xiaoxiao said, removing her gloves and plucking a few strands of fur from the meticulously swept dirt. Holding them up, she declared confidently, “I knew it.”
“Oh, quit stalling!” Gu Lang exclaimed, exasperated. “What’s going on?”
Yuan Xiaoxiao snorted, pointing at the fur in her hand. “Look closely. One end is tapered, uneven in thickness, and shows color banding. This is wolf hair.”
“So...you’re saying a wolf killed the deer?” Gu Lang asked, bewildered. “But why wouldn’t it eat it?”
Yuan Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes. “First off, it’s a musk deer, not a regular deer. And second…” She hesitated briefly, then continued, “Remember the pack of wolves we ran into a few days ago?”
Not wanting Gu Lang to derail the conversation again, she pressed on without waiting for a response. “Because of your interference, the wolf that should’ve been killed by the bear escaped. In essence, you saved its life. This is probably how it’s repaying you.”
“Holy shit!”
The livestream chat exploded with excitement. On the other end of the call, Chen Bai froze, hurriedly throwing clothes on as he processed the revelation.
“Mind = blown!”
“That’s gratitude for you—legendary!”
“Gu Lang, such a hero!”
“When a wolf turns back, it’s either to repay a debt or exact revenge.”
“Never heard of this before. Don’t lie to me, miss!”
“Our streamer’s becoming useless; he needs the girl to explain everything.”
“She knows so much—what does she actually do in real life?”
“What a story!”
Gu Lang, sensing a rare opportunity to flex, tried to play it cool. But the novelty of being thanked by a wild animal overwhelmed him. A goofy grin spread across his face, threatening to split his cheeks. Scratching the back of his head, he chuckled nervously.
“Heh heh… It’s, uh, pretty polite, huh? Hahaha!!”
Yuan Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes, turning away from his smug expression.
Wang Ping, however, felt a sudden clarity. This explained why, after witnessing the wolf pack hunt the Tibetan antelope, they’d later found its body along their path.
“Hey,” Yuan Xiaoxiao called over her shoulder, already walking ahead. “Let’s take the musk deer with us. If you don’t accept it, the wolf will probably keep following us and bringing more offerings.”
“No, no…” Gu Lang waved his hands dismissively, still grinning like an idiot. “No need, no need! A man doesn’t help others expecting rewards, haha…”
“You’re hopeless!”
Both Yuan Xiaoxiao and Chen Bai blurted out simultaneously. They paused, momentarily united by a shared sentiment of exasperation—and perhaps a touch of admiration.
“Kindred spirits!”
