Chapter 189: Let’s Make a Deal

Chen Bai hadn’t even reached the office yet when he had already made the call. And so, the push notification on Douyu’s homepage read: “Streamer Saves Wolf from Bear, Wild Wolf Repays Kindness.” Meanwhile, Gu Lang’s live stream footage was hastily edited into a few clips and posted on the homepage as promotional material. Especially the parts where he was hilariously chased by a bear after mouthing off and the first time the wolf king gifted him with prey—those snippets went viral the moment they were uploaded.

Wang Ping figured that even if you ignored all the other adventures, just the story of the wolf king repaying kindness would be enough for Gu Lang to brag about for ages. No matter how you sliced it, how many people could claim to have experienced something like this in their lifetime?

But alas, Gu Lang wasn’t just stubborn; his thought process always seemed to veer off into some uncharted, lonely path.

According to him, the wolf he saved had already been bitten in the leg by the bear. It probably took a lot of effort for the wolf to catch its prey, and if he took it away, the wolf might end up starving.

After Yuan Xiaoxiao explained things, Gu Lang had fully embraced his role as the “heroic savior” of the wolf and couldn’t step down from that pedestal. He was now overly concerned with “his wolf’s” well-being, completely ignoring the fact that the group was now out of food and facing dire straits.

The only one who didn’t need to worry was Little Four, still nursing and growing rounder by the day.

When they set off from Nima County, Gu Lang had bought a whole box of milk—20 bottles packed together. At two feedings per day, it should last at least 10 days. So while everyone else looked increasingly haggard, Little Four kept getting chubbier. If Wang Ping didn’t already feel affection for the little guy, he might’ve started eyeing those tiny ribs weighing less than three ounces.

It wasn’t until Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao disappeared into the distance that the wolf pack approached. This time, the wolf king didn’t find any strange objects lying around, but the prey was still untouched, leaving it thoroughly confused.

“What’s going on? Not eating this, not eating that—are all two-legged creatures this picky?”

Sniffing at the musk deer carcass on the ground, the wolf king’s face was etched with bewilderment.

At that moment, rustling came from a nearby dwarf tree to the left of the pack. The wolves stirred, and a few strong male wolves stepped forward, growling and baring their teeth at the tree.

The wolf king turned its head and saw the familiar white-haired creature from the “two-legged” group casually climbing down from the tree.

“Grrr…”

One of the wolves couldn’t hold back and lunged forward, teeth bared, but the wolf king quickly growled to stop it.

“Ahem…” Wang Ping scratched his head, ignoring the menacing glares from the surrounding wolves, and waddled over to the wolf king on his short legs.

Up close, Wang Ping realized that this wolf king was much larger than the average Tibetan wolf, with purer fur. Whether it was a special breed or not, it definitely stood apart from the others.

“So… buddy, can we talk about something?”

Wang Ping gestured animatedly, completely unfazed as he communicated with the wolf king.

The wolf king tilted its head, watching Wang Ping’s gestures intently for a long moment before turning to look at its pack members, who all shared the same dumbfounded expression—they had no idea what this weirdo was doing.

“Tsk…” Wang Ping frowned, his furry face showing frustration. He had been too impulsive, thinking of asking the wolf king to change its diet without considering the obvious communication barrier.

“Oh, right! I can draw! Who cares if anyone sees me here—it’s not like there’s an audience!”

Slapping his paw, Wang Ping marveled at his own brilliance. Ignoring the bewildered wolf king, he turned around and began drawing on the ground with his claw. In no time, a wild boar and a rabbit—both drawn with what Wang Ping considered uncanny accuracy—appeared on the ground in front of the wolf king.

“There, does that make sense now?” Wang Ping turned to the wolf king, shaking his little paw at the musk deer and then nodding vigorously at the drawings of the pig and rabbit.

“Hmm…” The wolf king pondered over Wang Ping’s drawings, brows furrowed, looking oddly melancholic. “Two-legged creatures are really hard to please.”

“Hey, dude, you get it, right? Give me a sign if you do~” Wang Ping waved his paw at the still-confused wolf king.

After staring at the drawings for a while, the wolf king still couldn’t decipher them. But glancing at the intact musk deer and the clearly separated patterns on the ground, it suddenly felt like it understood.

“Damn it, they’re complaining it’s not enough!”

“Awooo~~~”

The wolf king let out a howl, its meaning unclear, but the wolves behind it now regarded Wang Ping with hostility.

Wang Ping didn’t care. As long as the wolf king agreed, its subordinates could grumble all they wanted. The thought of possibly having roasted meat for dinner made his heart flutter with anticipation.

“Well, thanks! I’m off to catch up with them—you go ahead and take care of business!”

Waving goodbye to the wolf king, Wang Ping turned and scampered off in Gu Lang’s direction.

As Wang Ping disappeared around the musk deer, the wolf king inexplicably felt a wave of relief wash over him, as if communicating with Wang Ping had been more stressful than expected. Just as it was about to bark orders to its pack, there was another stir among the wolves. A few of the more impulsive ones growled and took a step forward.

Turning back, the wolf king was surprised to see Wang Ping returning.

“What now? Still got demands?” The wolf king watched Wang Ping approach, confusion written all over its face.

“Uh…”

Wang Ping awkwardly waved his paw at the wolf king, his furry face tinged with embarrassment. Pointing toward the direction Gu Lang had gone, then at his stubby legs, he mimicked running and shook his head emphatically.

The message was clear: His short legs weren’t exactly built for catching up with Gu Lang.

This time, the wolf king got it immediately—not because Wang Ping’s gestures were particularly professional, but because it understood as soon as he pointed at Gu Lang’s direction and then at himself.

“So… you want me to give you a ride?” The wolf king suddenly felt a pang in its injured leg.

Of course, the wolf king was currently limping, and Wang Ping, as mischievous as he was, wouldn’t stoop to bullying a disabled wolf. Before the wolf king could respond, Wang Ping stroked his chin and scanned the pack.

A chorus of low growls rippled through the wolves. Every robust-looking wolf glared at Wang Ping with threatening eyes.

Scanning the group, Wang Ping’s gaze landed on a blue-furred wolf. Among the pack, it was the most muscular and had the sleekest coat. Right now, it was snarling fiercely at him, looking like a disgruntled Husky whose toy had been stolen.

“That’s the one!” Wang Ping pointed at the blue wolf and turned to the wolf king.

“Borrowing a wolf?” Throughout its entire life, the wolf king had never encountered someone bold enough to come and request borrowing one of its subordinates.

Though Wang Ping wasn’t exactly a close acquaintance, he was technically under the “life-saving hero,” so the wolf king decided to extend the courtesy.

With a series of low growls, the wolf king issued instructions to the chosen blue wolf. The latter resisted with growls of protest but eventually, under the threat of the wolf king’s authoritative growl and the smug gazes of the other wolves, reluctantly stepped out of the pack and trudged over to Wang Ping, muttering curses under its breath.

“Hehe…”

Without hesitation, Wang Ping grabbed the scruff of the blue wolf’s neck and climbed onto its back. With a mock salute to the wolf king, he patted the wolf beneath him.

“Giddyup!”
