Chapter 206: The High-Pressure Wind Pump
“Thud.” The colossal serpent’s body whipped past, trailing a gale-force wind. Tang Fang seized the momentum, lunging forward and pulling Claire down with him as they tumbled to the ground.
The impact knocked the air out of Claire, but Tang Fang had no time to waste. Rolling to his feet in one fluid motion, he summoned an Overlord. “I’ll hold it off—run!” he shouted.
Claire tried to scramble up, but before she could, the Overlord’s tentacles coiled tightly around her powered armor, hoisting her into the air.
“No!” she screamed, thrashing wildly, but it was futile. The Overlord soared upward, carrying her farther from the danger below.
Meanwhile, Tang Fang turned his attention to the others. With a wave of his hand, two Medivacs materialized above Arroz, Housen, Churchill, and Walton. “Get to higher ground—it’s not safe here!”
He didn’t need to repeat himself. Housen and Churchill grabbed the dangling cables of one Medivac, which roared to life, its thrusters propelling them skyward. Arroz and Walton, on the other hand, leapt onto another Medivac’s cable, gripping it tightly as it ascended at a sharp angle.
The snake’s massive bulk meant it carried significant inertia, and Tang Fang had assumed it would give them enough time to escape. But the creature seemed to have eyes in the back of its head—or rather, all over its body. Even as its forward momentum continued, the tail swung sideways with terrifying precision, striking like a whip.
“Boom!” The Medivac carrying Arroz and Walton shuddered violently under the blow. Its frame buckled, propulsion systems failed, and it spiraled uncontrollably toward the central turbine wall of the circular platform.
Though battered by the wreckage, Arroz and Walton managed to cling to their cables thanks to the stimulant coursing through their veins. Fighting through dizziness and disorientation, they timed their release carefully, letting go just moments before impact.
“Thud.” Arroz hit first, rolling deftly across the platform. A seasoned veteran, he used the recoil from slamming his rifle butt against the surface to spring upright, landing in a crouch with practiced ease.
Walton wasn’t so lucky. His rear end smacked hard against the floor, sending him tumbling uncontrollably toward the edge of the platform. Just as panic set in, his momentum halted mere inches from the abyss below.
Five more meters, and he would’ve plummeted into the glowing blue chasm, meeting certain death. Shaking, he sucked in a deep breath, preparing to gather his strength and stand—but then came the sound of hurried footsteps behind him.
“Wham!” Before he could react, something slammed into his lower back with crushing force, propelling him forward. In an instant, he flew past the platform’s edge, hurtling downward into the void.
“Who… who pushed me?!” he yelled into the rushing wind. The answer came in the form of a deafening sonic boom slicing through the air, followed by a shadow flashing past. Suddenly, his chest collided painfully with something solid—metallic wings.
Not wasting a second, Walton clawed desperately at the wing edges, gripping them tightly. As the object beneath him slowed and began ascending, he finally got a chance to see what—or who—had saved him.
A Viking. It was a Viking. And in that moment, everything clicked. Tang Fang. Tang Fang had kicked him off the platform. Knowing the snake would stabilize itself soon and launch another attack, leaving no time for everyone to board safely, Tang Fang had made the split-second decision to use the terrain to his advantage. What seemed like betrayal was, in fact, salvation.
The Viking climbed steadily, rising above the platform where Arroz now sprinted toward safety. Meanwhile, Tang Fang summoned four Sentry units, deploying layers of force fields between the snake and the remaining survivors.
The serpent, having overextended during its initial charge, had skidded nearly four hundred meters away. Coupled with the barriers of overlapping force fields, there was seemingly no way it could reach them in time to stop their escape.
Tang Fang was resourceful, adaptable—but so too was the snake. The Overlord was already airborne, the Medivacs retreating rapidly, and the Viking hovered precariously near the platform’s edge.
Just as everyone thought they were safe, the snake made a new move—not a lunge or a tail swipe, but a deafening roar that shook the very air.
The howling winds carried a nauseating stench, reverberating like a dragon’s cry. Arroz redoubled his pace, and Tang Fang reached out to him with a grin—only for it to vanish abruptly two seconds later. Arroz’s burst of speed faltered, his steps slowing until he staggered backward, eventually slamming into the outer wall of the force field.
Simultaneously, Tang Fang felt his footing slip. An overwhelming suction pulled at him, dragging his body forward despite his desperate resistance.
“What incredible force…” he muttered, clinging to a nearby mechanical strut while staring ahead in horror. At some point, the snake had coiled its immense body, raising its massive head high and opening its jaws wide. Its throat vibrated as if it were a living high-pressure pump, drawing in everything around it. Silver streaks of wind condensed into a swirling vortex within its gaping maw, swallowing shuttles, machinery, and debris alike.
The fierce winds shrieked, slicing through the outer plating of Tang Fang’s armor with a hissing noise. He dropped to the ground, clutching the struts beside him with both hands. His expression twisted with dread as he realized the snake’s primary target wasn’t him or Arroz—it was the Overlord and the Medivac above.
The Overlord fought valiantly, expelling bursts of gas from its carapace in a frantic bid to resist. Claire clung desperately to its tentacles, her body swaying violently as the monstrous suction threatened to rip her away.
The Medivac fared little better. Its thrusters burned at maximum capacity, bathing the area in fiery red light, yet it couldn’t advance even an inch. Instead, it retreated steadily under the relentless pull of the snake’s vacuum.
Even the Viking, positioned at the periphery of the storm, trembled violently, rocking side to side like a leaf caught in a hurricane. Walton clung to its wings with all his might, his helmet banging rhythmically against the hull.
“Tang Fang, think of something fast! If this keeps up, we’re all dead meat,” Arroz called out, huddled beneath the protective bubble of the force field, gasping for breath.
