Chapter 202: Baneling

“Boom! Boom! Boom!” The crystalline structures, once dazzling and intricate like works of art, had now transformed into lethal aerial bombs. Thick clouds of pink mist erupted from the shattered crystals, clinging to the outer armor of the siege tanks like living organisms.

Bright flashes lit up the battlefield in rapid succession as the highly concentrated explosive micro-dust detonated, leaving deep craters and dents across the tanks’ exteriors. From a distance, it looked as though the vehicles had been savaged by a pack of wolves—a horrifying sight.

The siege tanks’ armor was designed to withstand even Rhino's 125mm armor-piercing shells, yet this seemingly innocuous layer of pink dust managed to breach their defenses. Arroz and his team scrambled to switch the tanks back into mobile mode, hoping to evade the relentless bombardment.

If the tanks were struggling, Claire’s bio-enhanced squad fared no better. The diamond-like projectiles didn’t need to hit them directly; they simply needed to explode near the group. The resulting explosion sent micro-dust swirling through the air, homing in on its targets and wrapping them in suffocating cocoons of death.

While marauders might survive thanks to their reinforced armor, marines stood little chance. Once enveloped by the deadly dust, their fate was sealed. Even Claire’s CMC-405 medic armor, capable of repairing both flesh and metal wounds, proved insufficient against the onslaught. Marines caught in the blasts were left disfigured and incapacitated, beyond her ability to save.

Just as Arroz and Claire’s forces were overwhelmed by the mushroom creatures’ surprise aerial assault, flashes of light illuminated the entrance chamber. A mixed force of Sentries, Stalkers, and Dragoons materialized on either side of the battlefield, unleashing particle beams and phase-splitting rounds into the sky.

Silver streaks of energy pierced through the airborne fungi, reducing some to charred husks. The Dragoons’ phase-splitting projectiles were particularly devastating, causing entire mushrooms to vanish in bursts of electricity. Meanwhile, the Sentries’ disintegration rays sliced through fungal stalks and caps alike, sending chunks of their bodies crashing to the ground with wet splats, spilling milky fluids everywhere.

With the retreat of the siege tanks, the previously contained pink mist began spreading again. But the Sentries had another mission: deploying force fields. Energy surged from their dorsal orbs, generating transparent barriers dozens of meters high and nearly a hundred meters wide. These shields formed a protective ring around the entrance area, sealing out the encroaching mist.

Given that the mist had already reached within 50 meters of the entrance when the team disembarked, the force fields not only halted its advance but also trapped countless explosive micro-dust particles inside. Explosions erupted like dawn breaking over the horizon, filling the enclosed space with violent shockwaves—equivalent to detonating multiple tons of TNT in a confined area.

Yet, within the Sentry force fields, the explosions were contained, unable to break free. Inside the barrier, chaos reigned supreme: flames roared, and debris flew. Outside, however, the scene remained eerily calm, save for the mist pressing futilely against the shimmering walls.

Housen stared in disbelief, glancing at the battered tanks beside him. “Why didn’t you use these sooner? If we’d had this from the start, we wouldn’t be in such a mess!”

He was wrong to blame Tang Fang. Even Tang Fang hadn’t anticipated the Sentries’ ability to generate such extensive force fields. Initially, he’d merely intended to slow the spread of the mist in one area. To his surprise, the combined efforts of a dozen Sentries effectively sealed off the surrounding space, preventing the mist from advancing further.

Outside, the force fields held firm; inside, Stalkers and Dragoons kept the skies clear. Arroz and the others finally breathed a sigh of relief.

At that moment, progress occurred on Tang Fang’s end. The tightly sealed rune gate flared with blinding light before spiraling open like an inverted vortex.

“It’s open! Let’s move,” Tang Fang called out, recalling all combat units into his system inventory. Arroz and the others quickly stowed their weapons and filed inside. As they entered, several force fields depleted and collapsed, allowing the surging mist to rush forward like stampeding horses.

Tang Fang glanced at the remnants of downed mushrooms scattered nearby. An idea struck him. In an instant, a Spine Crawler appeared beside him. Its long spine shot out like a fork, impaling a piece of mushroom cap and retracting to bring it to the relic’s entrance.

As more force fields failed, the pent-up mist exploded outward, rushing toward them like the aftermath of a nuclear detonation. Without hesitation, Tang Fang scooped up the half-mushroom cap and leapt into the entrance.

---

The chamber they entered was small, barely tens of square meters. To everyone’s surprise, there was no gravity inside. Upon entering, their bodies floated weightlessly, unmoored by any force.

Only after the door closed did the artificial gravity activate—but its direction was perpendicular to what they’d experienced outside, requiring several moments to adjust.

“Tang Fang, why did you bring that in here?” Churchill exclaimed, keeping his distance as if avoiding a plague.

Claire and the others shared his confusion, gazing curiously at Tang Fang.

Knowing explanations would fall on deaf ears, Tang Fang ignored them. He flipped the mushroom cap over, dipped his fingers into the wound, and pulled out a strand of milky-white fluid.

“Unknown DNA sequence detected. Initiating diagnostic program…”

“Diagnostics complete. Compatible Race Confirmed: Zerg.”

“Reconfiguring genetic structure. Gene level D+. Research tree unlocked. Technology level 1. Building unlocked: ‘Baneling Nest.’”

“Life energy collected. Total: 100. Rare elements collected: 40.”

As expected, the mushroom’s DNA had unlocked the Zerg’s “Baneling Nest.” With it, zerglings could now evolve into Banelings.

Banelings were explosive Zerg units derived from zerglings. After a brief pupal stage, zerglings mutated, losing their claws and developing sacs filled with volatile chemicals on their backs. When close enough to enemies, Banelings triggered an internal chemical reaction, detonating themselves and spraying corrosive acid. Though self-destructive, their explosions dealt massive damage to foes. Combined with the Zerg’s innate burrowing ability, Banelings became even deadlier, emerging suddenly from underground to turn safe zones into death traps.

Each Baneling cost 25 minerals and 25 gas, plus the base cost of a zergling, bringing the total to 50 minerals and 25 gas. As an area-of-effect (AOE) unit, Banelings shared similarities with Terran Widow Mines but offered unique advantages. While weaker individually and slightly more expensive, Banelings excelled in supply efficiency. Each occupied only 0.5 supply points compared to the Widow Mine’s 2, allowing for armies of up to 2000 Banelings under the supply limits of 1000.

Imagine swarms of Overlords raining Banelings upon enemy positions—an army of 2000 explosives. Though newly unlocked, Tang Fang trusted their potential as a breakthrough weapon. With upgrades like “Centrifugal Hooks” enhancing mobility, Banelings could roll instead of crawl—an image akin to fiery wheels rather than bouncing balls.

Excited by this new addition, Tang Fang couldn’t help but chuckle, sending shivers down the spines of those around him. Holding a half-eaten mushroom cap and sticky white goo, his grin seemed grotesque.

After regaining composure, Tang Fang noticed the puzzled stares. Scratching his head, he asked, “What?”

Claire pointed at the mushroom cap in his arms. “Are you planning to cook this? I’m warning you—I’m not making dinner.”

“Cook?” Tang Fang glanced at the slimy, foul-smelling cap and tossed it aside. “You think I’d eat that?”

Rolling his eyes, he approached the inner door, pushing it open to reveal a narrow corridor lined with glowing blue lights.

“This doesn’t seem right,” Arroz muttered, furrowing his brow. Based on Epsilon architecture, pathways leading to control hubs should have been grander. This passageway, though seemingly endless, was narrow enough for only seven or eight people to walk abreast—a stark contrast to the usual rugged style.

Commanding a drone to morph into a worker and build a “Baneling Nest,” Tang Fang turned to Arroz with a wry smile. “We made a mistake. This isn’t the path to the control center.”
