Chapter 195: The True Purpose
Another hour passed, and the two of them hurried back to the auxiliary function chamber above the bridge of The Morning Star. Without a word, Tang Fang strode to the central console and extended his hand into the glowing interface, allowing the light filaments to adhere to his skin.
"Emma, inject the star map data into the control hub."
"Yes, Commander."
As soon as her voice faded, streams of runes flowed from the ε symbol on Tang Fang’s forehead, traveling down his arm and into the control hub. The previously subdued psionic flame erupted like an untamed beast, churning with waves of fire, its corona rising high as matrices of runes swirled around it.
"No need to worry. Everything is under my control," Tang Fang said without turning around, sensing Claire’s apprehensive gaze.
About half an hour later, the flow of rune matrices slowed, and the glow on Tang Fang’s forehead gradually dimmed. Emma’s voice chimed in at just the right moment. "Commander, transmission complete. Virus running... Navigation process injected. Data connection established. Reconstructing star map... Task completed. Navigation system activated."
"Well done," Tang Fang praised her, though he knew she was merely an intelligent machine.
"It is my honor, Commander."
Returning to the present, Tang Fang glanced at Claire before flicking his index finger. A vortex formed in the center of the psionic flame, and beams of light shot out, weaving together a holographic galaxy.
"This is..." Claire finally understood what had been missing from the EZero Particle Spatial Effect Field Generator. "It’s a navigation star map!"
"Precisely." Tang Fang nodded. "Based on the information retrieved earlier from the psionic flame, that octopus-like mothership in the vision not only supplied energy to these generators but also served as a navigator. If we want the generators to function as intended, the navigation system is indispensable."
"No wonder I always felt the fleet wasn’t fully utilizing the generators’ potential. Now it seems their 'invisibility' feature is merely a side effect."
"Of course, this is only a theory based on the data I’ve just obtained. Whether it works in practice remains to be tested."
Claire smiled faintly. "Then what are we waiting for?"
"Not so fast." Tang Fang shook his head. "Though I can read Epsilon script, their star maps are entirely alien to me. There’s a significant difference between how humans and Epsilons name celestial bodies."
"What do we do then?"
"Don’t rush. Give me some time. I need to compare the Epsilon star map with human ones. Once I find suitable reference points, I can merge the two. However, the amount of data to compute is enormous—it won’t happen quickly." This solution came from Emma, and Tang Fang was simply relaying it.
"The equipment here is linked to The Morning Star’s main database. Accessing star map data should be straightforward." As she spoke, Claire swiped across the touch panel. Seconds later, a holographic projection of the Hirnbel Major Zone, where the Monya Empire resided, appeared.
"Emma, begin."
"Yes, Commander."
...
An hour later, an annotated star map materialized in Tang Fang’s mind.
"Commander, the comparison analysis is complete. The star map data has been saved to the Orbital Command Center’s database. You may proceed to update the navigation module of the generator’s control hub."
"Good. Update the database."
A few minutes later, the prompt “Update Complete” sounded. Tang Fang dismissed Emma and focused his attention on manipulating the psionic flame. With his commands, the holographic galaxy dissolved and transformed into a map of the Monya Empire’s domain.
One, two, three, four... Dozens of flashes lit up on the star map.
"What’s this?" Just as Fang Fang was confused by the flashes a stream of runes carrying vast amounts of information flowed from the control hub and swiftly merged into his forehead.
"So that’s it... That’s how it works!" Shock and excitement spread across his face moments later.
"What’s wrong?" Claire asked worriedly.
"I’ve finally figured out the true purpose of the EZero Particle Spatial Effect Field Generator." Tang Fang gave her a small smile and began explaining the revelation.
Contrary to earlier assumptions, these generators weren’t designed to replace warp drives or serve as external attachments for regional teleportation. Their actual function was far more profound: they created a high-energy EZero particle field that warped spacetime, forming a wormhole large enough to accommodate entire fleets. This wormhole consisted of countless continuous subspaces connected by a relay station at the other end, which stabilized the structure and slowed its collapse. Ships could traverse through the wormhole safely without being swallowed by collapsing space.
In simpler terms, the generators tore open a wormhole in real space leading to the relay station. Fleets could travel through this wormhole at speeds surpassing the rate of spatial collapse, eventually emerging unscathed from the relay station’s distortion field—achieving faster-than-light interstellar travel.
The red dots flashing on the Monya Empire’s star map marked the locations of these relay stations.
In the realm of warp drive technology, the Epsilons were light-years ahead of humanity. Even their slowest ships operated at warp level 9.9. Ordinary Epsilon vessels typically ranged between 9.95 and 9.97, while only shuttles and advanced warships reached 9.99. For specialized super-shuttles, warp levels soared to a staggering 9.9999.
What did 9.9999 mean? Take, for example, the Tranquil Star System contested by Sulru Empire’s Saint Violet Fleet and Monya Empire’s Thunder Fleet over Namie Planet's development rights. Located approximately 14 light-years from the nearest imperial port, a ship like Zeus, operating at warp level 5.5, would take about 22 days to reach it. Even the fastest human shuttle required over ten days. An Epsilon shuttle at warp level 9.99 needed only 17 hours, while at 9.9999, the journey shrank to just over 30 minutes.
Initially, Tang Fang planned to leave Krotan immediately and head to the Meijar star system to retrieve Tang Lin and Tang Yun. Traveling from Asram aboard The Morning Star at warp level 6.5, the trip would have taken roughly 12 days. But according to the star map, there was a relay station in the Meijar star system. Using the subspace tunnel generated by the EZero Particle Spatial Effect Field Generator, the journey could be reduced to just 40 minutes—a mere nap’s length.
"Tang Fang, are you serious?" Claire stared at the star map in disbelief, her eyes filled with awe, excitement, and anticipation. If every generator in the fleet were equipped with navigation modules, they wouldn’t fear imperial encirclement or depend on the Charles Federation’s goodwill.
"I know what you’re thinking," Tang Fang sighed. "Configuring navigation modules for each generator isn’t difficult, but I’m the only one who can operate the Epsilon psionic flame. Point-to-point jumps require constant corrections to prevent deviation and getting lost in subspace, where collapsing space would crush ships into dust."
Hearing this, Claire’s excitement waned, replaced by a hint of melancholy. "Can’t you develop an external system anyone could use?"
"Develop? External system?" Tang Fang fixed her with a deadpan stare. "You’re giving me too much credit. Drivers and designers are clearly different professions."
While Emma could theoretically design a human-machine interface compatible with Epsilon systems, doing so required parsing the tech tree for the generators and understanding their construction principles—a task currently impossible due to lack of both relevant data and the necessary electronic machinery.
Claire sighed deeply, her spirits low.
Just then, a gruff voice interrupted from behind. "What are you two hiding here for? Could it be..." Turning, Tang Fang saw Housen entering with a lewd grin plastered across his face.
Ignoring him, Tang Fang focused instead on Arroz, who stood silently behind.
"When do we leave?" Arroz asked succinctly.
Tang Fang thought for a moment. Montgomery and Adelaide had arrived, and now that The Morning Star possessed point-to-point jump capability, departure wasn’t urgent. It made sense to visit them first and bid farewell later in the evening.
"They’ve arrived, so we should see them. We can depart in the afternoon or early evening."
"Fine." Arroz nodded and said no more. Tang Fang patted Claire’s shoulder. "Cheer up. If it’s not possible now, maybe there’ll be a way later. Let’s make the most of our remaining time—go meet Colonel Montgomery and say goodbye to Aunt Virginia."
"Mm-hmm." Claire nodded.
Together, they left the auxiliary chamber, joined Grant, Walton, Churchill, and others, and exited The Morning Star. After confirming Marion’s location, they entered the Starport area.
At noon, Montgomery, Adelaide, Marion, Virginia, and others hosted a farewell banquet for Tang Fang, which lasted until 15:00 before concluding.
Afterward, Marion and the others accompanied them to the boarding passageway on the dock. Waving goodbye, they watched as Claire buried herself in Virginia’s arms, crying like a child. Only after the reluctant older woman gently pushed her toward the gangway did Claire reluctantly follow Tang Fang and the others, dragging her feet and looking back repeatedly as she trudged toward The Morning Star.
